Content

Virtualization of DPC of Giperglobus is constructed based on VMware vSphere 4 and the separated infrastructure of storage of Netapp FAS3140 that provided effective use of IT resources along with reduction of operating costs. Consolidation of virtual machines and use of functionality of storage systems of Netapp, allowed to reduce costs on placement of the equipment and also on power supply, cooling and service.

Task

Create the Data processing center for achievement of bigger efficiency of IT infrastructure.

As a main goal of the project on implementation of new DPC Giperglobus there was an increase in efficiency of use of all IT resources of a system and reduction of operating expenses and maintenance.

One of the most burning issues of the IT system of Globe was minimization of forced idle times in work of several main applications which led to a stop of business processes at several levels at once and turned around in essential costs of the enterprise. Key applications are:

  • Information systems based on Oracle - Enterprise resource planning, "floor planning of goods", "accounting and planning of working time"
  • 5 information systems based on the MS SQL Server Finance, "Bonus calculation of suppliers", Analytics, Document flow, "Planning of budgets" for 800 employees at the central office and Hypermarkets

Besides, there was a problem of decrease in time of backup. Backup procedure was complicated as at night data exchange with Hypermarkets is executed, and backup started in the morning and matched the period of active work of hypermarkets.

It was necessary to provide the solutions for storage and data processing answering to the following main objectives for ensuring smooth and reliable operation of an information system of Netapp:

  • ensuring continuity of business processes
  • performance improvement of a system
  • acceleration of implementation of new services
  • expense optimization on contents

Solution

The virtualized DPC based on NetApp FAS3140 and the solution VMware vSphere 4.

Virtualization of DPC of Giperglobus is constructed based on VMware vSphere 4 and the separated infrastructure of storage of Netapp FAS3140 that provided effective use of IT resources along with reduction of operating costs. Consolidation of virtual machines and use of functionality of storage systems of Netapp, allowed to reduce costs on placement of the equipment and also on power supply, cooling and service.

As a result, were virtualized all main business applications, and also basic services, the including directories, file service and e-mail MS Exchange. The coefficient of virtualization made 1:9, and economy on power supply and cooling reached 4 times. The project of virtualization allowed to avoid costs for forced lease of space - everything managed to be placed in the existing DPC premises.

Management of virtual environment of DPC from the single console and delegation of the rights of administration on the basis of roles as a result of which data of applications on DWH administrators of applications manage allowed to avoid increase in costs for administration with a growth of loading by 3 times.

The fault tolerance of information systems is defined by lack of a uniform point of failure in infrastructure of each DPC. The built-in cluster means of VMware vSphere and the clustered disk array of Netapp allowed to reduce the general downtime of IT services by 3 times at three times bigger load of DPC.

Within ensuring disaster tolerance the reserve DPC based on storage systems of Netapp of FAS 3140 was organized. The technology of replication of data SnapMirror provides the high level of protection and fast recovery of all IT services. The checked recovery time of IT services on reserve DPC does not exceed 30 minutes

The two-level backup system based on Snapshot technology allowed to provide storage of a large number of instant backup copies in DWH of Netapp and to provide the minimum indicators of RPO/RTO. For control of integrity of all backup copies the dedicated server is used.

As a result, the problem with a backup window is completely solved. Time of backup is reduced about more than 24 hours, to 5 minutes. Fast data recovery is provided. Time of transaction of data recovery decreased from several hours to tens of minutes.

The system of multilevel storage of backup copies automatically transfers the backup copy last per day to tapes. Replication of data on the remote platform on SnapMirror technology includes backup copies of data. Thus, existence on the reserve platform of jellied backup copies of data is automatically guaranteed.

Advantages

Reduction in cost by 50% and performance improvement of work of administrators by 3 times.

Technologies of Netapp allow to increase efficiency of data storage considerably. Use only of technology of deduplication of data, i.e. exceptions of duplication of data, allowed to increase efficiency of storage significantly. In particular, savings from deduplication made:

  • 35% for VMware storage (disks of virtual machines)
  • 30% for file storage
  • 50% for archives

Use of "thin" selection of resources, deduplications, instant copies, "thin" replication and other technologies of Netapp allows to reduce considerably costs and to achieve economy of disk space.

The performance indicator of storage systems allowing to estimate the relation of the used logical data to physical volume DWH NetApp averages for the exploited 130%, the maximum performance indicator reaches 160%.


There are main results achieved thanks to implementing solutions of Netapp and VMware:

  • decrease by 50% of total cost of ownership (TCO)
  • increase by 3 times of labor productivity of administrators thanks to simplification and automation of resource-intensive processes
  • reduction of terms of deployment of new applications at 7-12 times
  • ensuring business continuity and exception of data loss and stop of services
  • project payback period – 5 months
