Permenergo implements a virtual backup system

The HOST group created the project and carried out system implementation of data backup of IBM Tivoli Storage Managerdlya of JSC IDGC of Ural, the press service of integrator reported on August 28, 2013. Implementation began with Permenergo branch.

Project Background

The existing backup system of JSC IDGC of Ural provided not all enterprise information systems, its use was accompanied by a significant amount of risks. The main:

• idle times of enterprise information systems
• decrease in productivity of work.

Influence of a set of factors and their set induced the management of IDGC of Ural to begin development of a uniform system concept of data backup for all branches. Implementation was decided to be begun with Permenergo branch.

"As a part of Permenergo eight production divisions, each of which has own infrastructure. In the absence of uniform policy and existence of the distributed structure to gain complete idea of in what division what data and as are protected, it was very heavy. We were not sure that we will be able to recover all critical information and our services will not be stopped, - Alexander Galanov, the deputy head of department on operation of IT infrastructure of Permenergo noted. – Not to allow it, the decision on implementation at the enterprise of a single system of data backup was made".

Project Progress

For project implementation the HOST Group is selected. Specialists of the contractor booked audit of IT infrastructure of the enterprise. For comprehensive economic and technical assessment of efficiency of future backup system on the platform of Permenergo deployed several stands with the equipment and the software. The customer selected IBM Tivoli Storage Manager.

Details

Taking into account testing and infrastructure with narrow data transmission channels, specialists of the contractor suggested to use the nodal scheme of data storage with uniform architecture of each node. It meant creation in each division of Permenergo of the small copy of a backup system of the main executive office of branch in the city of Perm with an identical set of the equipment and the software. Systems management of backup in each node is exercised by a dedicated server. In executive office the similar server provides monitoring and management of all infrastructure from one console at once. As storage the virtual libraries with deduplication of data which provided cutting of costs for storage of backup copies at the expense of an exception of duplicates were used. Further data can be transferred from them to tape libraries. Now it is the most effective and convenient information storage option for transportation.
