2021: Achieving a record 5.6 Gb/s data rate in a 5G pilot network in Moscow

On September 15, 2021, PJSC MTS"," the Russian a company providing digital, media telecommunication and services, and a company, Huawei a global provider of ICT solutions, announced that the pilot network achieved a 5G To Moscow total data transfer rate of 5.6 Gbit/s from the base station to several to smartphones operating in the range of one cell. The tested multi-antenna solution Massive MIMO significantly increases network throughput, and thus average data rates for a large number of users.

During tests in the capital's Dream Island amusement park, each of the eight Huawei smartphones simultaneously received a signal from the Huawei 5G DBS5900 base station at a speed of about 700 Mbps, and the total peak data rate from the cell in the 100 MHz band was 5.6 Gb/s. According to the statement of MTS and Huawei, "in this configuration - this is a record speed for Russia."

The Massive MIMO technology used in 5G networks due to multiple antenna elements increases the throughput and capacity of the cell, as well as increases its coverage radius during data transmission due to the simultaneous formation at one frequency of controlled narrow beam (beam forming) from a separate antenna to each of the subscriber devices.

"MTS, together with partners from Huawei, demonstrated in the 5G pilot network the capabilities of modern technologies that provide the maximum possible network access speeds for hundreds and thousands of subscribers who simultaneously use mobile Internet or resource-intensive data services. Solutions using Massive MIMO will be widely used in the construction of fifth-generation networks in stadiums, concert venues, entertainment venues, shopping and business centers, residential areas with dense development, as well as in industry and transport - where it is necessary to ensure high capacity and high-quality network parameters, "said Alexey Maslyankin, director of the MTS radio access network department.

"Huawei highly appreciates its partnership with MTS and as one of its key partners tries to offer advanced telecommunications solutions both for testing purposes and for deployment on commercial communication networks. We focus on network efficiency and performance. And one of the technologies that allows you to achieve these goals is Massive MIMO. We believe that this technology will be one of the cornerstones of future 5G networks, and the tests conducted demonstrate the effectiveness of this solution. Many operators in the world are already actively testing or already using Massive MIMO, which allows them to raise their subscriber experience to new heights and stimulate the development of new services, "said Wang Ke, head of the Huawei department for working with key clients of the MTS group in Russia.

2019: 5G Technology Development Agreement

On June 5, 2019, Huawei announced the signing of an agreement with MTS PJSC on the development of 5G technologies and pilot launches of fifth-generation communication networks in Russia in 2019-2020.

The signed agreement was exchanged by the President of MTS PJSC Alexei Kornya and the current Chairman of the Board of Huawei Go Pin.

As part of the agreement, the companies developed an action plan for 2019-2020, providing for the introduction of 5G technologies and solutions and IoT on the current MTS IT infrastructure, the development of the operator's commercial LTE network to the 5G-ready level, the launch of test zones and 5G pilot networks for various use scenarios, including at infrastructure facilities.

Thanks to long-standing mutually beneficial relations, MTS and Huawei continue to strengthen market positions in their areas. With the signing of the 5G development agreement, our partnership reaches a different level - we not only give impetus to the strategic cooperation of the two companies in the field of high technology, creating the basis for the commercial use of 5G networks in Russia in the very near future, but also contribute to the further development of trade and economic relations between Russia and China,

We are very happy to conclude this agreement with MTS, especially in such a strategically important area as the development of 5G. The fact that the President of Russia and the President of China attended the ceremony once again proves how important partnership in technological areas is for Russia and China. Huawei has extensive experience in the development of fifth-generation networks. The company has received more than 16,000 patents in the field of 5G. We hope that our joint efforts will bring the era of 5G in Russia closer,

The signed agreement provides, inter alia, for the following joint work of companies:

  • consultations on effective use of the frequency spectrum;
  • Launch gigabit LTE zones with high access rates and network capacity
  • Deploying ultra-low latency LTE-Evolution networks
  • Launch 5G networks for fixed wireless access
  • 5G NR launch on MTS commercial network;
  • 5G Business Case Development Collaboration (Robot ARM);
  • introduction of IoT solutions for industry, smart city, housing and communal services, agriculture;
  • joint preparation and implementation of the 5G network segment (taking into account spectrum distribution);
  • implementation of 5G use cases (including smart city, smart manufacturing, unmanned transport)
  • implementation of test zones with 5G solutions on complex infrastructure facilities (high-speed trains, metro, multi-storey housing complexes, etc.).
