NASDAQ upgrades DWH and optimizes data storage

On June 30, 2014 the company Microsoft announced relocation of data warehouses NASDAQ OMX Group of platforms Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

For successful work financial traders need the operational data view available in seconds. Earlier, to conform to these requirements, the IT personnel had to control and optimize work of databases constantly.

Project Progress

In 2013 IT department of NASDAQ OMX company made the decision on data transfer on SQL Server of 2014 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. The company already used SQL Server of 2012 for compression of 500 TB data pages up to 250 TB.

The new version of the platform helped to reduce data volume to a quarter of amount of the initial size. SQL Servers 2014 and technology of the pokolonochny index (ColumnStore) allowed to reduce 250 TB already condensed data to 125 TB. It allowed the company not only to save resources, but also to effectively provide data to clients.

For June 30, 2014 the NASDAQ OMX GROUP company continues cooperation with Microsoft. The complete end of updating of databases is planned for the middle of 2014, and completion of process of optimization of tables using ColumnStore is expected by the end of the year.
