The Medtronic micro cardiac pacemaker implantation performed in Russia for the first time

2019: The Russia's first operations on implantation of a micro pacemaker of Medtronic are performed

On March 27, 2019 there was information that the Novosibirsk doctors the first in Russia started testing of a compact pacemaker of Medtronic Micra of production of the American company Medtronic which sponsors carrying out a research.

According to the cardiovascular surgeon of clinic Meshalkin Alexander Romanov, manufacturing company conducted all necessary researches proving security of the device and applies technology since 2015. The Novosibirsk specialists also got necessary permissions of all controlling organizations for accomplishment of pilot transactions with use of the compact device of Medtronic.

In total within the experiment the Medtronic Micra device is going to be implanted to 10 patients. For March 27 a half of pilot transactions is carried out so far. As Alexander Romanov explained, the electrodeless pacemaker of Medtronic should replace normal pacemakers for the most part of patients. However there will pass not less than half a year before such interventions are delivered on a flow, the specialist considers. Devices will be more expensive than standard devices, but as doctors hope, for patients of transaction will be free.

There is rather big cohort of patients who for one reason or another — inborn, purchased — at them have problems with the carrying-out system of heart. What does it mean? That heart itself cannot be reduced. At patients resistance to physical activities decreases — it is shown by short wind, weakness, the shortage of air, they cannot do any normal things in the standard life — the surgeon of clinic Meshalkina explained.

According to him, implant to such patients pacemakers — do a section in subclavial area, create "pocket" for the device and connect electrodes to heart. It is normal transaction which in the world is done every year to tens of thousands of people, but many meet difficulties. The normal pacemaker is externally noticeable, also it imposes restrictions for sports activities, besides, there is a risk of infection of surrounding fabrics.

Meshalkin's clinic tests the Medtronic Micra device since March, 2019. As Alexander Romanov specified, this pacemaker is less than normal device by 20 times and only 2 grams weigh, implant it into heart through a puncture in a femoral vein. By estimates of the specialist, with this device there is no cosmetic defect, it is safer than a normal pacemaker.

The mathematics teacher Arthur Lackman became the participant of researches — he was recognized that he before transaction so worried that he even wanted to refuse

The 84-year-old resident of Zdvinsky district of area Arthur Lackman became one of participants of a research — performed on it operation on March 25. According to the patient, began to feel heart troubles closer to pension — he ceased to work only in 2005 (before worked the mathematics teacher and the principal). At first there was arrhythmia, then short wind developed, and as a result doctors appointed transaction. Instead of a normal pacemaker offered Artur Lakman implantation of the innovation device. According to him, operation was performed "only". After the statement to the pensioner, as well as other participants of a research, it will be necessary to come once a month to clinic that doctors could estimate a condition and efficiency of the device.^[1]
