Rosinzhiniring will virtualize IT space of employees

On February 5, 2015 it became known of the project of virtualization in Rosinzhiniring company - 10% of employees are transferred to the virtualized jobs. The technology basis from HP company is used. Development and support of the project are carried out by 4x4 company, implementation - IT specialists of "Rosinzhiniringa"^[1].

Project Tasks

Earlier in Rosinzhiniring company the traditional workstations which are not ensuring the due level of fault tolerance and safety in comparison with VDI were used, were expensive in service.

Additional an argument for benefit of thin clients - reduction of a set-up time of new jobs twice that relevant at the organization of temporary jobs for the employees sent from other offices.

Considering these and other factors, at the beginning of 2014 in the company made the decision to transfer to VDI the main part of employees, excepting the designers and designers working with "heavy" graphic applications with which virtualization there are difficulties.

Project Progress

The project was implemented by the staff of IT service "Rosinzhiniringa", specialists "4x4" controlled process and accompanied the project, providing selection and supply of equipment.

The solution - the company accepted to work with own forces from understanding - the independence of implementation helps "learn" the equipment and specifics of work with it in use by own efforts to support infrastructure.

Crucial element of IT infrastructure with "thin clients" - a storage system (DWH) as it bears the main loading of the user stations. From the technology point of view it is the most difficult part of the project, and the most expensive regarding investments. The choice was stopped on products HP: storage 3PAR 7400.

As "thin clients" HP solutions of T610 and T620 series are selected.

For virtualization of computing resources products of Microsoft are used.

The expected payback period 2-2.5 years. Investments into the project made 7 million rubles in the server hardware, 765 thousand rubles - in the client systems. The created infrastructure of servers and DWH is expected start up to 400–500 virtual machines. In May, 2014 on thin clients more than 60 employees - less than 7-10% of the general park of jobs are translated.

The implementation of the second queue of the project begun in 2015 will lead penetration of "thin clients" to 20–25%.

Project Results

Before project implementation the organization of a workplace cost 40 thousand rubles (including the cost of the notebook and monitor), per 5 years - 80 thousand rubles. After project implementation the cost of a workplace was reduced twice: in the long term for 5 years cost is to 35–40 thousand rubles (the thin client + the monitor + DWH) when calculating on 100 users taking into account costs for service contracts of zheleza producers.

Transition to VDI increased efficiency of a support service. Additional effect of project implementation – increase in mobility of employees. Users had an opportunity of movement between offices of the company, at its order there is a uniform point of entry to the workstation: using any computer at any office of the company, he addresses on a node in corporate network and gets access to the machine. The similar principle works during the work from the house. Time for preparation of a workplace for the new employee was reduced.
