2023: Infrastructure renewal plan with the allocation of 30 billion rubles for these purposes

On April 27, 2023, it became known that the Rutube video service, owned by Gazprom Media Holding (GPMKh), intends to spend approximately 30 billion rubles on updating the infrastructure, including expanding the network of geographically distributed servers. This is expected to catch up with YouTube on key technical indicators.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, we are talking about a large-scale project, which can be designed for several years. According to experts, Rutube plans to purchase about 15 thousand servers: this can be both Russian equipment and foreign equipment delivered through parallel imports. After a comprehensive update, Rutube will be able to increase server capacity in such a way that the maximum number of simultaneously served users of the service is comparable to the YouTube level.

Infrastructure expansion also includes the development of a content delivery network (CDN). This technology makes it possible to distribute the content of the site to servers geographically located in different places. This optimizes the delivery of materials to end users. Based on the amount of 30 billion rubles, as noted by the general director of CDNvideoYaroslav Gorodetsky, in current market prices, CDN can be formed with a bandwidth of several tens of Tbit/s. At the same time, YouTube traffic in Russia is estimated at 11-13 Tbit/s. In 2023, Rutube intends to double the capacity of its CDN.

Kommersant adds that the implementation of such a large-scale initiative may be hindered by the recent dismissal of key members of the Rutube team. These include former Rutube CEO Alexander Moiseev and other significant team members. After that, some Rutube projects were suspended.[1]
