Digitization of 23,000 exhibits

More than 23,000 exhibits were digitized for the Russian Ethnographic Museum, including large objects from the ethnography department of the peoples of Central Asia. Elar announced this on March 10, 2022.

The Russian Ethnographic Museum for March 2022 stores objects for more than 150 peoples of Russia and neighboring countries. All ethnographic objects are diverse, different in materials, performance techniques, sizes, so each type of object requires an individual approach in the process of digitization. In 2021, ELAR specialists created digital copies of exhibits from various museum hotels to fill the electronic catalog. The objects of ceramics of the department of ethnography of Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, exhibits from the department of ethnography of the peoples of Siberia, objects, details of the dwelling and utensils of the department of ethnography of the peoples of Central Asia were digitized.

Digitization of the details of the dwelling of the Central Asian department was the most time-consuming and important for the museum. These are large-sized objects - doors, grilles, dome poles of the dwelling of nomadic peoples of Central Asia, and work with a large number of these of the same type, difficult to digitize for the museum of objects was carried out at a high level by the staff of the museum itself and specialists of the ELAR corporation, - said Natalya Nikolaevna Prokopyeva, deputy director for accounting, storage and restoration.

In high resolution, the textiles of the ethnography department of the peoples of Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova were scanned. Professional domestic planetary scanning complexes were used to obtain reference copies. For the first time, the use of scanning was tested by the Russian Ethnographic Museum and ELAR back in 2018 using the example of textiles from the Russian ethnography collection.

This experience turned out to be very interesting, since the obtained image quality made it possible to consider the smallest details of the ornament, the interweaving of threads, - explained Natalya Nikolaevna Prokopyeva. - In 2021, we used the same methodology, which now allows us to use images both in publications in printing, for research purposes, and for a detailed consideration of weaving and embroidery techniques of textiles.
