ICL Services provides to Sanofi service of support of MDM of infrastructure

As there was a task

Cooperation "Sanofi Russia" from ICL Services, one of the leading IT companies of Russia, began more than a year ago (in 2014), after tendering process on rendering services[1]Desk Service, "User support on places" and "Management of IT infrastructure". The service in mobile device management was one of the directions also (Mobile Device Management (MDM).

In general about MDM

Usually MDM allows to solve problems of security of corporate data on the mobile devices which are not a part of corporate network and also to status monitoring of devices, management of mobile applications, access to corporate resources (file storages, corporate mail, Sharepoint), unloading of the reporting under devices. The MDM solution most often represents the complex consisting of command center (a server part) and the client software (agent). Distinguish standard (on premise), SaaS (Cloud) and hybrid models of MDM solutions:

  • the standard model means implementation of the MDM solution in corporate environment, independent control of licenses, search of personnel for service of this solution (or its transfer to outsourcing);
  • the SaaS model (Software as a Service) is under construction on a subscription fee for use of service and is suitable rather for small and medium business;
  • also hybrid options when a part of service is available for a subscription fee are popular, and a part is controlled by the company.

Using MDM, it is possible:

  • install security policies on devices, configure Wi-fi/VPN according to corporate standards;
  • operate applications (remote installation / removal, white and black lists, politicians of applications);
  • configure restrictions for a certain device or group of devices (for example, will lock data transmissions in roaming, shutdown of the camera, etc.);
  • block and delete corporate data on the device at its theft or loss;
  • keep track of location of devices;
  • provide access to corporate mail (Exchange, Lotus Domino);
  • manage access to corporate file storages, content of Sharepoint.

Project Implementation

The used MDM solution in structure "Sanofi Russia" is on-premise implementation of AirWatch from VmWare – solutions which are leading in the field of mobile device management, by mail, applications and content.

In the park of devices of the customer at the moment there are about 1.5 thousand corporate devices of Apple (Ipad 4, Air, Air2; IPhone 5.6), being in use at employees across all Russia. Adding in corporate environment happens before issue of the device to the user by installation and the subsequent AirWatch MDM agent configuration, with indication of data of the server and the user account. Authorization in a system is made using the AD account of corporate environment, only membership in a certain AD group is necessary. Within several minutes the preconfigured profiles come to the device, according to politicians of compliance.

Certainly, for the customer on one of the first places there is a respect for information security, i.e. data protection and knowledge therefore the cloud service of iCloud is disconnected by one of the set profiles. Other profiles comprise policy on obligatory installation of the password on a device unblocking and also certificates for use of corporate Wi-Fi, access to mail through the built-in IOS e-mail client and opportunities to install applications from corporate AppStore.

Corporate AppStore represents the separate application which is installed on the device at its adding in corporate environment and contains all appendices, necessary for the employee, some of which cannot be found in standard AppStore.

Speaking about the AirWatch console, it should be noted wide functionality in the field of collection of information on devices and reports. After adding of the device in the AirWatch environment, the administrator without delay gets an information access about the owner, to the list of installed applications, information on battery power, active the Internet connection, the version of IOS, to serial number. He also sees:

  • whether everything profiles were successfully applied to the device;
  • whether such functions as "Find My Iphone" are included;
  • what restrictions are applied to the device;
  • when it was in network last time.

Console part of AirWatch also provides to administrators access to a huge number of different reports which can be received in real time, or, for example, to configure sending them on a certain mailbox in the selected time on a regular basis. Useful functionality is the possibility of complete remote reset of the device, removal of corporate data in case of loss or theft. The supplier of this solution offers the accessibility in the console from any place in the world, but for the purpose of security this customer allows access to the web interface of the console only from corporate network.

In spite of the fact that the MDM solution was already implemented globally and functioned, before ICL Services there was a task to optimize administration of "the Russian part" of infrastructure.

In skop the ICL Services commands accomplishment of a role of User and Device Administrator (The administrator of devices and accounts of users) including enters:

  • adding of new devices in the Airwatch environment;
  • preparation of the device for issue to the specific user (AppleID creation, adding of the user in certain groups in AD, installation of corporate software, adding of information on the domain in a user profile in AirWatch);
  • The 3rd support line of end users on problems with mobile devices;
  • remote reset and removal of the device from the environment in case of replacement of a device, dismissal of the employee, a krazhiutera;
  • ensuring functionality of the preconfigured profiles (corporate security policies, mail, certificates for access to Wi-Fi, etc.);
  • deleted an ustanovkuudaleniye of corporate applications;
  • processes of communication with the European colleagues, IT specialists of global service of support of Sanofi corporation;
  • collecting of the reporting in the AirWatch system.

It will allow our engineers to concentrate the attention on the MDM direction, its development and improvement of quality of service, and to the customer finally to optimize costs for support of mobile devices", - say in ICL Services.

The first results

Service of support of MDM of infrastructure is provided to Sanofi as BAU (Business As Usual) more than two months. The first steps on optimization of labor costs are taken. The majority of activities is executed by the remote MDM command of specialists, process of delegation of the automated and documented routine tasks on the Service Desk command ('Shift to the left') prepares.

Looking forward

Mobile device management - one of the most actively developing segments of management of IT infrastructure of the companies. Mobile devices turn into instruments of increase in productivity, and such evolution stimulates development of solutions for management with them. According to the forecast of the TechNavio agency, by 2019 the annual average growth rate of the market of MDM will be 22.7%.

Gartner predicts transition to the following phase in the market of MDM within less than two years. The market is taken by the complete solutions (for example, the same AirWatch) including in addition to MDM also content management (MCM), applications (MAM) and also with ability to integrate with corporate services Microsoft. The concept of BYOD (Bring your own device) becomes more and more popular and begins to force out traditional corporate products, such as BlackBerry.
