On December 10, 2024, it became known that the Severstal-Metiz group of enterprises launched a test operation of autonomous trucks at a plant in Cherepovets. Four internal routes with a total length of 8 km have been automated on the territory of the enterprise.
According to CNews, the project was implemented in cooperation with EvoCargo, a manufacturer and service provider of autonomous logistics. The fifth generation autonomous truck Evocargo N1 was created without a driver's cab, steering wheel and pedals, is equipped with a multi-sensor perception system based on machine learning algorithms.
Oleg Golyakov, Head of Digital Development at Severstal-Metiza, stressed that the introduction of autonomous transport is in line with the company's strategy for digitalization and automation, which reduces operating costs and cost of production while improving security.
Artificial intelligence technology, computer vision and a sensor system provide 360-degree visibility, allowing the robotic platform to respond to obstacles three times faster than a human driver. Trucks are used for in-plant movements of materials, containers, packaging and lubricants.
Deputy General Director - Commercial Director of EvoCargo Vasily Zhukov noted the importance of the project for the mass introduction of autonomous technologies into the logistics processes of large industrial enterprises. Autonomous logistics makes operational processes more coherent and predictable.
Severstal-Metiz continues to test various modern solutions for robotizing production and logistics processes. The Company selects the most efficient technologies for subsequent implementation and scaling in its enterprises, which allows to optimize the costs of the fleet and the wage fund while increasing the economic efficiency of production.[1]
