Project date: 2012/01  - 2012/10

The T-Platforms company completed delivery of the domestic supercomputer to the State university of the State of New York in the city Groan Brook (State University of New York at Stony Brook, SBU), the press service of the supplier reported on October 22, 2012.

Objectives

The laboratory of professor A.R. The Oganov Lab specializing in carrying out scientific and practical researches in theoretical mineralogy and materials science will become the main consumer of computing resources of computer center. The supercomputer of T-Platforms company will be used to preparation of new materials on the basis of scientific developments of SBU. For the solution of these tasks the unique computer program developed by professor Oganov which allows to model structure of new materials with the set properties will be used. Using this method the carbon structure similar in hardness to diamond is already created, new modifications of a pine forest and sodium, a number of minerals in an Earth's mantle are open. Today the laboratory actively works on creation of new supersolid materials, materials with special electronic and optical characteristics and also materials for supercondensers and accumulators for storage of the electric power.

"We developed the unique method allowing to define by computer calculations optimal on stability and properties of structure of the new, not existing earlier materials. The algorithm which we tried to repeat is strictly built and similar to acting in the nature, - Artem Oganov, professor of SBU told. - During creation of new materials it is possible to work in two ways. The first - to touch all possible combinations of atoms in a crystal grid. But the problem is that the number of variations in structure is astronomically big. For example, availability of only 10 atoms in structural unit creates about 100 billion structural options of new material for which analysis it would be required hundreds of years of calculations on the best supercomputer of the world. And if we consider 20 or 30 atoms, then in this case the solution of the one and only task will require more time, than age of the Universe. Therefore we selected other method, evolutionary according to which the supercomputer "blindly" approves different solutions. As a rule, they are far from perfect, but the most perspective from which are in turn made new, child are selected from them. So gradually we approach the purpose – optimal structure of new material. The computer system T-Platforms showed the highest efficiency at solving of tasks using this method, and in the near future we plan accumulation of its performance".

Way

Having won a victory in tender, the T-Platforms company provided complex approach to creation and commissioning of the computer system. The T-Blade V-Class system including 10 computing nodes based on Opteron 6238 AMD processors and one managing node became a hardware basis of the SBU supercomputer. The program basis of a cluster was formed by the CentOS operating system. Design capacity of a system - 2.5 Tflops, and actual performance according to test results of Linpack exceeded 80% of peak. Besides, under the terms of the contract the expert of T-Platforms company performed "thin" tuning of the VASP software package intended for modeling of the atomic and molecular and electronic and nuclear systems by methods of a quantum mechanics and molecular dynamics. Thanks to it the speed of work of this software increased by 27%.

"Our company pays much attention to business development in perspective foreign markets. Two years ago we opened office in Germany and we keep several perspective projects on cooperation with the largest European supercomputer centers, such as Leibnitz Rechenzentrum and Juelich Supercomputer Center and also CSC. This year we took the first step to an output of the Russian supercomputer technologies to the American market, - Vsevolod Opanasenko, the CEO of T-Platforms company noted. – Examination of our command allowed to win a victory in tender and to successfully implement this the project, sign for us. I hope, this event will become the beginning of long successful cooperation of our company with SBU which also other research centers for implementation of joint projects in the future will be able to join".
