2019: Project completion on implementation of Astra Linux OS

On August 20, 2019 the company "LANIT Urals" reported that it together with IT- department Ural state economic university completed implementation in university operating system Astra Linux. According to the results of project implementation of Astra Linux it was implemented in 600 workplaces that makes 37% of total number of the automated jobs at the university. Thus, URGEU became one of the first state higher educational institutions in Russia, executed orders Government of the Russian Federation of 7/26/2016 N 1588-r regarding transition from foreign on domestic office software. The IT distributor project the Axoft company which provided service for to financial financing of delivery with complete post-payment of software after implementation acted.

According to the company, migration on Linux for the Ural state economic university – one of stages of long-term IT strategy of university. System approach to project implementation allowed to make process of import substitution in URGEU organic for users and effective for the IT management of educational institution. As a result of transition the university standardized automated workplaces of users, enhanced information security and also received the instrument of control and management of an automated workplace of users that significantly increased the level of a maturity IT infrastructure of university.

In the course of determination of the operating system the IT department of the university considered several alternative solutions. After the analysis of the possibilities of the considered OS won competition Astra Linux. Functional characteristics, licensing terms and the reference of use of a system in Russia became the main selection terms.

The partner in implementation and delivery of the solution during the competitive procedure selected LANIT Urals company. At the first stage of project implementation the integrator inspected hardware, program, server providing and peripheral equipment of IT infrastructure of the university. After the contractor started translation procedure of an automated workplace with Windows on Linux. Implementation of automatic migration on Linux was carried out by forces of the contractor according to methodology of import substitution of KIPARIS including 12 parallel flows of works and using a complex of technical solutions Gardener.

It should be noted that directly the procedure of migration on the Russian OS for 600 users demanded 15% of time of all project. Its main part was occupied by works on design and development of technical solutions. Besides, preparation and implementation of test laboratory were carried out. One of the main pluses of the Astra Linux operating system which became the platform for our import substitution in addition to compatibility with the majority of applied software products and peripheral equipment, is first technical support of a product which is performed by the developer. Moreover, together with Astra Linux Group based on URGEU the authorized training center for government employees in which users and administrators of university were already trained was created. It is a striking example of how information technologies influence the business strategy of the organization, setting it development vectors. The IT department of URGEU not only carried out a task of import substitution, but also created the direction of training, having resolved financial issues in terms of reduction in cost of ownership of software and profit earning at the expense of these rates. This case confirms that in the market there are already working solutions on migration from foreign software. There are algorithms of completely computer assisted translation of jobs on the domestic software with preserving of user data and settings.
