At the end of December 2021, it became known about the start of production of a high-precision radiation therapy system Varian Halcyon at "" Radiotherapeutic Equipment Factory(RTT Factory, part of GK R-Pharm"") in Moscow Region. SEZ "Dubna"

According to the head of the RTT Factory Andrey Popov, Halcyon production is localized in three modifications, including the most advanced version of Halcyon Elite. The first Elite device assembled in Russia was installed at the Khabarovsk Regional Clinical Center for Oncology as part of the federal project "Fight against Cancer." In total, the company plans to produce up to 200 linear accelerators.

By the end of December 2021, eight Halcyon accelerators were assembled at the Russian enterprise. The essence of the systems is that high doses of radiation are directed pointwise to cancer cells, without affecting healthy ones. This method is suitable for the treatment of most oncological diseases.

The systems allow radiation therapy for patients with neoplasms of the head and neck, chest, abdominal cavity, pelvis, central and peripheral nervous system, malignant diseases of the lymphoid system both for radical treatment and for palliative care.

The cost of the Halcyon Elite system, installed in the Khabarovsk Regional Oncology Center, amounted to 195 million rubles. By the end of 2021, commissioning work is underway, and already in February 2022 the institution plans to receive the first patients.

The project of localization of linear accelerators Varian - "Factory of radiotherapy equipment" in the Dubna SEZ - was initiated by co-founder of PET-Technology Alexei Tsarkov. It was assumed that the organization of production would require 900 million rubles of investment. Tsarkov later withdrew from the project, and Alexey Repik bought his share through R-Farm Venture LLC^[1]

2020: Plans to launch production of Halcyon devices in Russia

The Factory of Radiotherapy Equipment (part of R-Pharm Group of Companies) told Zdrav.Expert on September 3, 2020 that under a license agreement with Varian Medical Systems (USA), it will launch in the first half of 2021 the local production of the Halcyon radiotherapy system in four modifications. At the same time, a version of the Halcyon system with optimized imaging due to the integrated system of kilovolt computed tomography in a conical bundle (CBCT) will become available on the Russian market. They plan to collect a pilot sample of the device in the first quarter of 2021.

The Halcyon system simplifies and improves the quality of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), as well as improves patient comfort and shortens the time from installation to clinical operation without compromising quality. Halcyon provides an optimized workflow consisting of only nine steps from the beginning to the end of the procedure, thereby reducing the total treatment time. The system can be installed in a period of up to two weeks, allows for accelerated commissioning, requires less radiation protection than traditional devices, can be located in most existing small procedural rooms.

The strategic agreement on the localization of Halcyon platform production, signed by RTT Factory LLC and Varian in September 2019, involves the production of about 200 acceleration complexes over five years at the RTT Factory production complex in the Moscow Region. This agreement expanded the license agreement signed in 2017 for the local assembly of two flagship models of Varian linear accelerators - Unique and Clinac iX.

Fabrika RTT will produce all existing modifications of the Halcyon system, including a version equipped with a kV imaging system with CBCT function for more accurate determination of fabric structures. We are confident that Halcyon is the optimal choice for healthcare facilities that want to replace the older Co-60 gamma therapy machines with a more advanced linear accelerator. Halcyon can be installed in small canyons without the need to reconstruct or strengthen the radiation protection of the room thanks to the compact size and built-in radiation absorber device, "said Andrey Popov, general director of RTT Factory.
