Mobile operator T2, together with the Russian developer of the Proteus Research and Development Center, has introduced Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology using domestic equipment in eight regions of Russia. This became known on October 22, 2024. This is the first case of large-scale application of Russian solutions for the transmission of voice calls over the 4G network.
According to the press service of T2, VoLTE technology has become available in Tomsk, Ulan-Ude, Orenburg, Kurgan, Birobidzhan, Yekaterinburg, Ivanovo and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. In total, the service was launched in 23 regions of the operator's presence, where 51% of subscribers already use it, and voice traffic in the 4G network accounts for 53% of the total volume of calls.
The technical director of T2 Aleksei Dmitriyev noted that the introduction of VoLTE allows subscribers to make calls without interrupting the Internet connection, while ensuring high quality voice transmission and fast connection.
The deployment of the technology began in August 2024. In the first month, the operator covered two regions, in September - six, and in three weeks of October - another 15 territories. By the end of 2024, it is planned to make the service available in all regions of the company's presence.
Vladimir Freinkman, Vice President for Marketing and Business Development of the Proteus Research and Development Center, emphasized the strategic importance of the project to increase the country's technological independence. The capabilities of Russian developers meet the requirements of the Tier1 level operator, which was confirmed by the results of trial operation.
To use VoLTE, subscribers just need to enable the corresponding option in the settings, in smartphone some cases the technology is activated automatically. Calls in the LTE network do not consume a mobile packet Internet and are charged as regular voice traffic.
An important advantage of the technology is to save battery power on the device, since the smartphone does not need to switch between 2G/3G communication standards. Among the regions where VoLTE is already available are Gorno-Altaysk, Penza, Cheboksary, Kirov, Saratov, Izhevsk, Samara, Yaroslavl, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Yoshkar-Ola, Krasnodar, Maykop, Barnaul and Saransk.[1]
