About the Product

SQL Anywhere is the relational database management system (DMS) from Sybase iAnywhere company, Sybase subsidiary company.

SQL Anywhere is the leading solution on management and synchronization of data, for the applications working at a distance from data processing centers. From the moment of the creation SQL Anywhere was developed so that to provide the feature set characteristic of the standard corporate database, high performance and reliable synchronization for the network, built-in and mobile systems which are critical for business

Functions and advantages

  • Based on SQL Anywhere development of the high performance applications which are requiring for the support of the minimum participation of the database administrator, and sometimes, and not requiring his existence at all is possible. It is reached due to existence in SQL Anywhere, the self-configured query optimizer and functions of dynamic management of the CACHE size. Applications based on SQL Anywhere can process 20,000 transactions per minute, service thousands of users and work with hundreds of gigabytes of data.

  • The structure of SQL Anywhere switches on reliable mechanisms of synchronization of a corporate class that will provide the reliable and protected integration of the local, working with data application and a corporate DB. It is the only technology of synchronization providing synchronization of data between popular mobile devices and databases of Sybase, Microsoft, Oracle, MySQL and IBM at the enterprise.

  • SQL Anywhere DBMS was from the very beginning projected counting on embedding in server applications, applications of the removed working groups or mobile applications. It contains a set of self service features, such as automatic administration, backup and fine tuning, mode of the hidden work and process of installation which is integrated with process of installation of the application, - all this does exclusively easy its broad deployment with any application program.

  • Creating applications of data processing on the basis of SQL Anywhere, developers will estimate the advanced opportunities and flexibility of the platform and also compatibility with the SQL and ANSI standards. Such opportunities as OLAP, the materialized representations, isolation of pictures, full-text search, regular expressions.

2011: SQL Anywhere OnDemand Edition

On September 13, 2011 Sybase, Inc. announced the new product intended for satisfaction of demand of independent software providers for simple management tools data and deployment of multitenantny applications at capacities of operators of services. SQL Anywhere OnDemand Edition contains a set of the tools and functions expected cloud application allowing software suppliers to manage data for cloud applicaions and providing satisfaction of both their own needs, and needs of their customers. The declaration was made at the Sybase TechWave conference held together with the SAP® TechEd 2011 conference in Las Vegas (piece Nevada) from September 12 to September 16.

SQL Anywhere OnDemand Edition is the only cloud management tool data allowing independent software suppliers to combine management of the databases used by application programs with providing the proper security levels of the data and high-level management necessary for customers (at the same time databases can be scaled over a wide range). Sybase is able to be satisfied to both requirements thanks to the pragmatical approach allowing software suppliers to isolate from each other data of the different tenant, saving simplicity of management. SQL Anywhere OnDemand Edition allows suppliers of software tools to create and unroll cloud applicaions and also to manage them without compromises, thereby implementing advantage of scale effect with a guarantee of isolation of these customers from foreign programs.

Independent suppliers of software tools feel the need for a possibility of free movement of the programs between public, private and hybrid clouds today — without binding to any one operator of cloud services. Many suppliers operating with the applications working at their own capacities are anxious with a problem of preserving and expansion of the customer base without development process complication. Thanks to the fact that SQL Anywhere OnDemand Edition does not tie vendors to specific cloud services or architecture of data management those can create the cloud applicaions able to function both in public clouds, and at capacities of vendor, according to individual customers needs.

SQL Anywhere OnDemand Edition has following features:

  • Dynamic selection of capacities of a DB — selection and release of computing powers on demand; a possibility of sharing of computing resources the different tenant for obtaining scale effect; isolation of this different tenant at the level of files.
  • Scaling of the tenant — support of operation of applications of "Web scale" with increase in number of the tenant up to thousands.
  • Atomic databases of the tenant — each database is serviced individually, setup of functioning and backup according to requirements of the customer and also direct access of the customer is provided; databases are in agreed placements with a movement exception if necessary.
  • Multitenantny security — management of powers and authentication for each base is performed independently; enciphering of the tenant separately is supported; the closed information storages are isolated from all other tenant in a system.
  • Completely relational DBMS — the solution is under construction on the checked RDBMS of SQL Anywhere having millions of installations and providing full support of SQL and relational data models.
  • Cloud management tools — are expected satisfaction of requirements of the independent software suppliers having thousands of databases, hundreds of servers and a set of versions of programs and schemes.

"Independent software suppliers are under pressure from the corporate clients wishing to receive the conveniences inherent to application services on demand together with the flexibility and security inherent in their local applied systems — Terry Stepien, the president of Sybase iAnywhere said. — SQL Anywhere OnDemand Edition — the offer, really unique for the industry. This product allows software suppliers to provide the security levels demanded by customers and high-level management, guaranteeing at the same time simplicity of system management, allowing to combine flexibly use of private clouds with public services for the maximum protection against global failures of own infrastructures".

2010: SQL Anywhere 12

In July, 2010 the Sybase company announced the new version of the product SQL Anywhere 12, the database management system and synchronization. The new version offers a number of innovations, including opportunities of storage and synchronization of space data, support of iPhone devices and also synchronization of large volumes of data.

One of the most considerable improvements is the possibility of synchronization of large volumes of data. Now the SQL Anywhere 12 system can effectively manage the information streams arriving from numerous mobile devices. The list of the supported mobile platforms includes Apple iPhone devices now (in addition to platforms Blackberry and Windows Mobile).

The new feature of Server Scale-Out provided to editions Advanced Edition allows to reduce load of crucial servers for the transfer account of the tasks connected with processing of reports and data "only for reading" on in parallel the working servers. Besides, the built-in mechanisms of self-government, such as Server Thread Auto-tuning function which provides automatic adaptation of data streams to the current loadings are implemented.

Expanded support of space data is offered to users of SQL Anywhere 12. The new version of a product supports requests with a binding to geographical coordinates, offers additional resources of management of space data and their synchronization, supports the OGC and SQLMM standards and locates the built-in mechanisms of export of data to the KML, GML and SVG formats.

The new tools which are switched on in structure of a packet will simplify execution of operations on monitoring, diagnostics and deployment of mechanisms of synchronization on different client devices. Users will also be able to simulate any operation on synchronization of data before its direct accomplishment.

Software developers will estimate closer compatibility of a product with Oracle databases and MySQL, support of .NET 4.0 and Visual Studio development environments 2010 and also enhanced capabilities of full-text search and data filtering.
