2022:39 million people
During 2022, Canada's population increased by more than 1 million people, or 2.7%. This was a record large increase since 1957, as stated in the report of the Statistical Service of the country, published on March 22, 2023.
It is reported that as of January 1, 2023, 39,566,248 people lived in Canada, which is 1,050,110 more compared to the first numbers of 2022. This increase is partly due to efforts by the local government to bring migrants into the country to reduce labour shortages. In particular, international migration accounted for 95.9% of the total population increase.
Canada accepts people changing their place of residence due to the current geopolitical situation, various conflicts or natural disasters, such as the earthquakes of 2023 in Turkey and Syria. At the same time, Statistics Canada notes that the increase in the number of permanent and temporary immigrants may result in additional problems in some regions of the country related to housing shortages, the provision of services to the population, an increase in the burden on transport infrastructure, etc.
Canada welcomed 437,180 immigrants in 2022, and the number of non-permanent residents increased by 607,782. These are record figures for the entire history of statistics collection. They, as they say, reflect "higher immigration targets and a record year for processing immigration applications."
The shown result puts Canada in first place in terms of population growth among 38 member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). With growth at 2.7%, as Statistics Canada emphasizes, the country's population could double in 26 years.[1]
