Authorities in the United States warned of holes in Veeam software - they are used to attack ransomware viruses
On October 17, 2024, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) reported the discovery of a dangerous vulnerability in Veeam software . The breach is exploited by cybercriminals to inject ransomware virus victims into the IT infrastructure.
This is a CVE-2024-40711 hole that has received critical status (CVSS score 9.8). The issue affects Veeam Backup & Replication, which is designed to back up, replicate, and archive information. Attackers can execute arbitrary program code on a vulnerable system without authentication. Thus, cybercriminals can gain full control over the attacked platform. If the server is hacked, not only confidential data can be leaked, but also the infrastructure of the target organization can be compromised. This can turn into huge losses.
The hole was discovered by information security researcher Florian Hauser, after which the corresponding exploit appeared. According to the CISA report, the vulnerability was exploited in cyber attacks for the purpose of extortion. In particular, in mid-October 2024, Sophos, a cybersecurity company, said that its incident response team was monitoring a series of attacks through a CVE-2024-40711 breach and attempts to introduce a ransomware virus. In one of these cases, attackers used the Fog malware, in the other - the Akira virus.
Although it is not known how widely the CVE-2024-40711 vulnerability is exploited, its potential to extract large amounts of data and ensure horizontal movement within networks suggests that it could become the basis of many ransomware attacks, experts say.[1] |
FSTEC warns of critical vulnerability in Veeam Backup cloud backup system
FSTEC has issued a warning about fixing a critical vulnerability BDU:2024-06706[2] the Veeam Backup & Replication cloud backup client. The vulnerability allows you to bypass the authentication procedure and remotely execute any extraneous code in the system. The vulnerability hazard level according to the CVSSv3 classification is 9.9 out of 10. It is not possible to get more detailed information about the error from the territory of Russia, apparently, the manufacturer has closed access to its site.
According to Veeam, a vulnerability was discovered in the Veeam backup and replication system that allows remote code to be executed without the need for authentication, Ruslan Bisengaliev, an analyst and researcher of cybersecurity threats R-Vision, told TAdviser readers. - The ability to execute remote code (RCE) is a dangerous vulnerability. At the moment, there is no public exploit to implement this attack, so this vulnerability is not yet popular. |
According to Vyacheslav Selikhov, a presale engineer at Cloud Networks, Veeam products were very popular with Russian companies before the start of SVO. He, in correspondence with TAdviser, gave the following reasons for this:
- Product reliability and functionality;
- Support of local requirements of Russian customers;
- Compliance with regulatory regulations;
- A wide ecosystem of partners, including in Russia;
- Active community of users and developers.
Until 2022, the Veeam Backup backup product was one of the most popular solutions on the Russian market, especially in combination with VMWare, "Ildar Zakiev, head of the Infrastructure department at LANIT-Integration, explained to TAdviser. - However, over the past two years, many organizations have switched to domestic software. Nevertheless, Veeam Backup is still found in the IT infrastructure, mainly in commercial or small companies. The presence of vulnerabilities in this or that software is a common practice, and manufacturers regularly release updates to fix them. However, in the current environment, Russian companies face the difficulties of timely software updates. |
Veeam Software was founded in 2006 by Russian entrepreneurs Ratmir Timashev and Andrey Baronov. The company is headquartered in Bar, Switzerland. The company's flagship product is a service for storing backups in the clouds. Due to Russian roots, the company historically had a lot of customers in the Russian Federation, but in March of this year the company suspended access to its service from the territory of Russia.
The manufacturer left Russia, leaving all customers without technical support and without updates, so this vulnerability is a huge problem, - complained to TAdviser Sergey Vasilenko, business development manager at SysSoft. - Those who have not yet expired technical support can be updated and this needs to be done as quickly as possible, and for those who do not have technical support we recommend downloading Veeam Extract to restore from a backup copy, preparing a product for migration, restricting access to the Network to the Veeam server and considering similar systems from Russian manufacturers. |
FSTEC itself recommends the following set of actions to protect against the vulnerability:
- use antivirus software to track attempts to exploit the vulnerability;
- disable or completely delete unused user accounts;
- Minimize user privileges.
However, Vyacheslav Selikhov offers a more extensive list of compensatory measures:
- Update and patching: Regularly update software and install updates to fix known vulnerabilities.
- Security Monitoring: Use intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS) to monitor suspicious activity and potential attacks.
- Access restriction: Implement the principle of least privilege, which will restrict access to Veeam Backup and other critical systems only for those users and services who really need it.
- Audit and analysis of system logs: Regularly audit system logs for unusual activity.
- Data encryption: Use encryption to protect backups both in the cloud and in transit.
- Employee training: Provide regular safety training for employees to increase their awareness of possible threats and protection practices.
- Using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Implement multi-factor authentication to access critical systems, including Veeam Backup, to complicate unauthorized access.
- Checking configurations: Regularly check system configurations to ensure they are in line with best security practices.
- Use of security tools: Consider the possibility of using antiviruses, firewalls and other security tools for an additional level of security.
- Network segmentation: Segment the network to limit access to critical systems and minimize the impact of potential attacks.

The vulnerabilities were discovered by Nikita Petrov, an expert at Positive Technologies. Two of them relate to Veeam Backup & Replication, a backup system that automates backup and disaster recovery processes. Another vulnerability was identified Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows in - ON for backing up Windows data.
Veeam solutions, according to the developer, are used by about 400 thousand customers from different countries.
"According to our forecasts, these vulnerabilities will be exploited by attackers in real attacks and many organizations will be at significant risk. It is therefore important to install updates as soon as possible or as a minimum to take action to identify abnormal activity associated with these products, "- noted Nikita Petrov. |
Both vulnerabilities (CVE-2022-26500, CVE-2022-26501) found in Veeam Backup & Replication allow an unauthorized attacker to remotely execute arbitrary code (Remote Code Execution, RCE). Versions 9.5, 10 and 11 of the product are vulnerable.
These vulnerabilities can be used for a number of illegal actions:
- Gain initial access. Attackers can gain a foothold on the device to install malware or achieve other goals.
- Disclosures. Vulnerabilities allow violators to install malware to steal data or to directly execute commands that extract and delete data from a vulnerable device.
- Denial of service. Attackers can try to run code on the system that hosts the vulnerable application and disrupt this or other applications.
- Enciphering infrastructures. RCE vulnerabilities can be exploited to deploy and run ransomware on a vulnerable device.
In turn, a CVE-2022-26503 vulnerability in the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code with large rights (Local Privilege Escalation) on a node and gain access to resources of a compromised node with large enough privileges. Information stored on a personal computer or server can be valuable to the offender and can be used to plan and conduct further attacks on the organization. If the domain account is further compromised, an attacker can gain access to information located on the local network. The vulnerability is contained in versions 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 3.0.2, 4.0 and 5.0 of the solution.
Positive Technologies experts recommend that you immediately install security updates released by Veeam vendor for affected products: 11a (build 11.0.1.1261 P20220302) and 10a (build 10.0.1.4854 P20220304) for Veeam Backup & Replication, as well as 5 (build 5.0.3.4708) and 4 (build 4.0.2.2208) for Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows.
If security updates cannot be installed, Positive Technologies recommends that you carefully monitor anomalous activity on product nodes that have been affected by vulnerabilities - in particular, check event logs for new privileged user accounts and access to sensitive files.

Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition
On April 10, 2019, Veeam Software announced the availability of the free Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition product for download.
The Veeam B&R Community Edition product name includes the word Replication, which indicates that users can not only back up virtual machines, but also replicate them. According to the developer, Community Edition is a full-fledged edition of Veeam B&R Standard, but limited to the ability to back up 10 virtual machines (or physical servers or workstations) within this edition. And it can be used in a production environment.
As noted in Veeam Software, earlier in the free version there were only 13 basic features - users could not run scheduled tasks, use replication, and backup was limited only to creating backups. In the presented version, all features of the commercial edition Standard Edition are available for free. You can use replication, schedule tasks from the GUI, not PowerShell, and more.
This is how you can configure the VM backup task for free:
You can also use replication for free, including to a remote site, where replicas of virtual machines are directly tied to the hypervisor, which means they are ready to be launched by the administrator at any time. In addition, at the destination of replication or backups, you can configure additional rollback of backups to a third-party site for data center protection, the developer claims.
Application awareness is also included in the free edition - backups will be consistent at the application level. Veeam Explorers solutions for Microsoft applications (Active Directory, Exchange, SQL Server, and SharePoint) allow you to restore individual objects from backups directly to applications (such as the Exchange mailbox).
With the help of Community Edition, you can deploy Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux on servers and workstations in order to back up physical systems (although out of 10 allowed systems, workstations will consume 1 license, and servers - 3), the developer emphasized.
But, as noted in Veeam Software, the most important thing is that after the limit of 10 virtual machines is exhausted, the rest of the machines can be backed up using VeeamZIP technology (that is, the Community Edition has not become worse in terms of restrictions). This will allow you to create a full backup of the virtual machine in a compressed format in the form of a VBK file (incremental copies and physical machines are not supported in this case).
Also, backup solutions for physical systems Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux can be used as free products separate from Community Edition. In this case, there simply will be no centralized console, but it is not needed for several servers, according to Veeam Software.
The solution for monitoring, reporting and problem solving also received a free version - Veeam ONE Community Edition. This solution is the successor to the free Veeam ONE Free Edition product, but it has added several significant features. The main improvement is the ability to monitor infrastructure Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructure, as well as machines with Veeam Agents installed. Veeam ONE CE allows you to report on your backup infrastructure, including features such as secure and unprotected VMs:
Their physical locations are:
According to the developer, the Community Edition, like the previous free version of Veeam ONE, can monitor any number of virtual machines. But in the updated version of the feature, the tools have been expanded - Remedy Actions have become available, allowing you to remove isolated snapshots or configure backups for VMs:
A free version of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 Community Edition has also become available for download. With the free version, you can back up data in Exchange Online and OneDrive for Business for 10 users, as well as 1 TB of SharePoint Online data.
You can download the free Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition from Veeam.[3]

Veeam Backup and Replication 9.0
On June 17, 2016, Veeam Software announced the release of Veeam Availability Suite 9.5, which includes Veeam Backup and Replication 9.0.
One of the significant changes in the version is full integration with the solution for VMware vCloud Director service providers.
Major changes:
- Single vCloud Director and Veeam Enterprise Manager authentication
- self-backup by users
- self-recovery by users
- managing repositories and quotas by the service provider
Veeam Backup and Replication is fully integrated with vCloud Director:
if earlier the user (the client of the service provider) needed to authenticate in vCloud Director, and then separately undergo Windows authentication in Enterprise Manager, now the same details can be used for both solutions:
Veeam automatically filters the resources of this client only when it logs in, which has the appropriate rights to them in vCloud Director:
Now the administrator of the service provider needs to configure the user once on the vCloud Director side, and operations such as temporarily disabling the user or changing the password will be automatically replicated to Veeam Enterprise Manager.
When the service provider client connects to the Enterprise Manager console with the details from vCloud Director, he has the ability to independently create and launch backup tasks. The provider can restrict its capabilities, such as, for example, the quota of disk space or available repositories.
Veeam Backup and Replication 9.5 protects the service provider from channel congestion on the part of an individual client with backup tasks through intelligent balancing, restrictions on the parameters of the task itself (for example, execution frequency). Also, all this can be controlled through scripts.
The service provider client can go to the Enterprise Manager console and restore not only the entire virtual machine, but also individual files or objects of their applications.
The service provider can adjust some parameters for the backup process of its clients. For example, if an Enterprise Manager portal administrator logs into the portal management console, they can manage clients, their repositories, disk quota, and backup task settings.

Veeam Backup & Replication 7.0 Patch 4
On June 5, 2014, Veeam announced the release of the Backup & Replication 7.0 Patch 4 update with full VSAN support.
This update fully supports VSAN technology (build 7.0.0.871). If earlier data stores of this type were not displayed in the list of objects for backup, now all are displayed as DSS:
The corrective update includes new features:
- VMware Virtual SAN (VSAN) - in addition to the basic VSAN support that other backup vendors have, Veeam takes into account the specifics of VSAN when operating the intelligent load-balancing mechanism. This allows backup to use those proxies that will pump out virtual machine disks located on the same ESXi host as the proxy. This allows you to backup as quickly as possible and not download an additional productive network with backup traffic. This is a very useful thing, see an example of its application here.
- Support for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - now this DBMS is supported, both as a production load in a redundant virtual machine, and as a backend database for the Veeam Backup and Replication server, and Enterprise Manager.
- License key auto update - The product will now automatically access the Veeam license server to update the keys, if necessary.
- Backup Copy - The maximum number of recovery points for a Backup Copy task has grown to 999. The backup recording function is supported when the network connection is broken.
- Hyper-V - added support for several Hardware VSS Providers that were not detected before, and, as a result, could not be used when performing backups. Improved snapshot creation - the algorithm is used to wait for the end of shadow copy on the volume instead of the instant completion of the task.
The update is available on the developer's website.
Always on-business concept
On April 8, 2014, Veeam announced that it was joining the NetApp Alliance Partner Program to realize the benefits of key technologies in today's data centers in line with the "always [6]" concept[6]
Veeam Software announced the creation, together with NetApp, of a comprehensive information protection solution for business continuity and 24x7 data access. With NetApp, Veeam Backup & Replication will be integrated with NetApp Snapshot, SnapMirror, and SnapVault.
The integration of Veeam and NetApp combines NetApp hardware snapshot capabilities and innovative Veeam technologies. NetApp hardware snapshots allow you to back up your data every 15 minutes and do not adversely affect your environment. At the same time, Veeam Backup & Replication guarantees high RTO performance: Veeam Explorer for Storage Snapshots allows you to recover virtual machine data from hardware copies of NetApp systems, as well as NetApp SnapMirror and NetApp SnapVault. Compared to other competitor solutions, backup from hardware snapshots is 20 times faster, and the integration of the unique capabilities of the two products is an effective tool for implementing the "3-2-1" rule in data protection, since one of the backups created is instantly sent to SnapVault.
Combining the efforts of NetApp and Veeam, according to the developers, will provide an unprecedented level of data protection that meets the requirements of "always-on business." The combination of these two leading technologies provides users with two main features:
- Backup using hardware snapshots. Backups are noticeably faster and workload-free, which significantly improves recovery point objectives. The feature is available in the Enterprise Plus Edition of Veeam Backup & Replication.
- Explorer for hardware snapshots. This feature restores individual files, application objects, and virtual machines directly from hardware snapshots. The feature is available in all versions of Veeam Backup & Replication, including Free Edition.
The new solution offers users a higher level of information protection and availability.
"Our collaboration marks an important milestone and a real breakthrough in advanced data protection technologies," stressed the Ratmir Timashev President and CEO. Veeam- When we founded, we were faced Veeam with the task of improving the basic characteristics. virtualizations This time we are starting to transform the key technology used in today's technology: we data-centers are creating additional opportunities for 100,000 customers to Veeam ensure continuity business processes and complete control over workloads. "
Veeam Backup & Replication v8 with NetApp Snapshot, SnapMirror and SnapVault will go on sale in the second half of 2014.

Veeam Backup & Replication v7
Veeam Backup & Replication v7 has two innovative technologies: built-in WAN acceleration and hardware-based snapshot recovery that take advanced data protection technologies to a new, higher level. Veeam Backup & Replication v7 also offers seven revolutionary new capabilities and more than 75 enhancements, such as Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SharePoint, backup for VMware vCloud Director, secure recovery of virtual machines and guest OS files by users, and tape backup.
With built-in WAN acceleration, backup speeds to a remote site are up to 50 times faster
The WAN acceleration module, developed by Veeam and optimized specifically for Veeam backups, allows you to copy data to a remote site up to 50 times faster than traditional file copying systems. This eliminates the need for customers to purchase and deploy generic devices to speed up WAN networks or increase network bandwidth to move backups to a remote site.
Hardware Snapshot Backup Module - Significant improvement in RTO and RPO
The second innovation is a hardware snapshot backup module developed in conjunction with HP. The module for HP StoreVirtual VSA, HP StoreVirtual (LeftHand, P4000) and HP StoreServ (3PAR) systems significantly improves RPO performance, as well as significantly reduces the burden on the virtual infrastructure. This enables IT administrators to make backups at any frequency throughout the day, even for I/O-intensive virtual machines (more on that).
Seven market-changing features and more than 50 other new enhancements
Veeam Backup & Replication v7 includes seven market-changing features and another 50 new enhancements, many of which the company recently announced. Among them: Veeam Explorer for SharePoint, support for vCloud Director, improved one-click recovery and support for tape backup (for more information on new features, see: http://go.veeam.com/.)
A brand new revision of Enterprise Plus and its promotion
Veeam offers customers a variety of options to meet their data protection and financial needs. In addition to the Free, Standard and Enterprise editions of Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam will introduce a new edition - Enterprise Plus, which contains two of the most important innovative product features - built-in WAN acceleration and hardware snapshot backup modules.
In addition, Veeam offers free updates to customers using the Enterprise edition and those who purchased or upgraded the Enterprise version of the product before July 1, 2013. These customers can upgrade their products free of charge to the Enterprise Plus version until November 1, 2013, inclusive.
2012: Backup & Replication v6
Backup & Replication v6, released by Veeam, is designed to back up and replicate virtual machine images. According to Veeam, this version has an improved distributed architecture that simplifies system implementation and maintenance, including in remote offices, and also has improved scalability. In addition, v6 speeds up backup and replication processes over the WAN.
Veeam says that the replication speed in the new version has increased by an order of magnitude. There is a One-Click File Restore function that allows you to restore virtual machines from standby via the Web, without having a direct network connection with them. At the same time, according to the company, you can restore a virtual machine in just a few minutes. The vPower technology provided in v6 allows you to run virtual machines directly from a compressed backup file. As in previous versions, various hypervisors are supported, including Microsoft Hyper-V.
Key Veeam Backup and Replication 6 features and enhancements:
- Enterprise scalability: An improved product architecture allows you to deploy to remote offices, branch offices, and large installations. Now there are several backup proxy servers for large environments (data movers), which can distribute the load among themselves during the backup process, and the Veeam Enterprise Manager server manages the process. Virtual machines are dynamically assigned to proxy servers taking into account the alogorhythm of load balancing, which reduces the cost of administering the RK infrastructure. Performance for WAN backup, replication, and recovery is also improved.
- Advanced replication: in some cases, the replication speed has grown up to 10 times, and there will also be a Failback (reverse recovery of the virtual machine after the failed host resumes with the VM) with the ability to synchronize the delta (data differences since the failure of the main machine on the main server and storage - Failover). In addition, replication to thin provisioned disks to the target server is supported. This is a strong bid to defeat VMware SRM 5 (in the Standard edition) for small companies where there are not many servers and you need to fit into small budgets. It is also possible to create replicas of the base image for VMware View environments.
- Multi-hypervisor support: Full support for Windows Server with Hyper-V role and Microsoft Hyper-V Server, and backup management for multi-vendor hypervisors from the same console. The same Veeam Backup installation will allow you to back up both VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. However, licensing is also a single one - you can distribute one pool of Veeam licenses between processor licenses for ESXi and Hyper-V hosts. In addition, there is support for the Changed Block Tracking methodology for Hyper-V to speed up the incremental backup process (tracking changed blocks since the last backup).
- 1-Click File Restore - Using 1-Click File Restore, you can go to Enterprise Manager, select the desired file and restore it to where it was deleted (this can also be done from the results of searching for the file by backups). At the same time, there is a separation of roles - there is someone who can restore the file (helpdesk), and there is someone who can open it. This feature is only available in Enterprise Edition.
Full list of new features (as of October 2012):
Veeam Backup and Replication 6 Architecture
- ESXi-centric processing engine - now the product architecture is fully based on the ESXi architecture, but support for the ESX hypervisor remains to the full extent.
- Backup proxy servers - A single Veeam Backup server can control multiple proxy servers that transfer data to target storage. Proxies do not require Microsoft SQL Server and contain a minimal set of components.
- Backup repositories are a new concept of backup repositories (known as media servers in traditional RK) that store backup task settings and target storage settings. Tasks for virtual machine PC using media servers are dynamically assigned to proxy servers, taking into account the load balancing algorithm.
- Windows smart target - in addition to the Linux target agent, which helps when backing up to remote storage, an agent for Windows has also appeared. This agent on the target machine allows efficient compression and updating of synthetic backups.
- Enhanced vPower scalability - Multiple vPower NFS servers can now be used. Now you can run even more VMs directly from backups (for example, if you have many VMs with large disks, this can help a lot). Any Veeam or Windows backup repository PC server can be such a server.
Veeam Backup and Replication 6 Core
- Optimization of source data retrieval - disk storage settings are now taken into account when accessing virtual machines. This allows up to 4x more performance for a single operation, depending on the disk array settings.
- Reduced CPU usage - now half the task load on the processor, which allows you to run more PC or replication tasks on a single Veeam Backup server or proxy server.
- Traffic throttling - Bandwidth control options are now available, which are based on the source/target IP pair. These rules can be based on the time of operations - the time of day or the day of the week.
- Multiple TCP/IP connections per job - Data Movers can now initiate a connection to multiple IP addresses, which significantly increases the backup speed. This is especially effective for replication over WAN links.
- WAN optimizations - Veeam Backup data transfer protocol has been significantly improved in terms of performance for data transfer over connections with large channel delays.
- Exclusion of swap files - blocks related to swap files are now excluded from transfer to backup, which significantly increases performance.
- Enforceable processing window - Now you can set a PC or replication window for each task (all tasks that do not fall into this window are completed). Also, outside the window, the use of snapshots is not allowed, which does not allow affecting the performance of VMs during working hours.
- Parallel backup and replication - Tasks related to the same VM can now be performed in parallel. For example, you can run a daily Full Backup task in parallel with a running replication task.
Backup enhancements in Veeam Backup and Replication 6
- Backup mapping - when creating a new VM backup task, it can be attached to an existing task (for example, it already has files of this VM). In this case, Full Backup may not be required for this VM.
- Enhanced backup file format - The new metadata format allows you to quickly import backups, and also lays the foundation for supporting new functionality in future product releases.
- Backup file data alignment - VM data stored in a backup file can be placed within 4 KB blocks. This increases the deduplication performance of both Veeam Backup itself and third-party deduplication technologies (such as disk array).
- Improved compatibility with deduplicating storage - now the PC engine has less impact on previous backup files, which improves the performance of arrays that post-process stored data.
Veeam Backup and Replication 6 Replication
- New replication architecture - now replication uses a two-agent architecture that allows you to collect VM storage data on the source DR site with one PC proxy server and send it directly to the backup site proxy server (and vice versa), bypassing the Veeam Backup main server. Therefore, now it does not matter where to place the latter.
- Replica state protection - Now incremental replication tasks no longer update the last VM recovery point. This allows a task to be interrupted without rebuilding the last recovery point before the next task rolls it back to the last consistent state, as in previous versions. In version 6, the last recovery point is always consistent and the VM can be started at any time.
- Traffic compression - due to the new replication architecture, it is no longer important where the main Veeam RC server is located, and traffic is compressed much more efficiently. In addition, compression level settings for transmitted traffic have appeared, which reduces bandwidth requirements by up to 5 times.
- Hot Add replication - now the proxy server on the target site represents replica disks using Hot Add technology. This reduces traffic flow by up to 4 times.
- 1-click automated failback-Allows the virtual machine to be restored back (Failback) after the failed VM host resumes to synchronize only the delta since the last Failover, that is, data differences since the primary machine failed on the primary server and storage). Before completing this process, the VM can be checked for operability on the main site.
- 1-click permanent failover - the ability to carry out all the necessary procedures in one click to complete the process of turning the backup machine into the main one, when in the event of a failure of the main VM it moved to the backup site.
- Active rolls - Replication now stores recovery points as normal VM snapshots. This allows you to roll back to anywhere on the backup site, even without the participation of Veeam Backup.
- Improved replica seeding - enhancements to the replication mechanism. Now replication uses ordinary backup files, this allows you to reduce the size of the transmitted data, VMs with thin (thin) disks are supported, and much more.
- Replica mapping - now the replicated virtual machine can be tied to an existing VM on the backup site (for example, it was previously replicated or restored to the backup site from a backup copy). This allows you not to transfer the entire amount of data to create a replicated pair.
- Re-IP - now you can set rules for the automatic assignment of an IP address for the restored VM. This is very useful when it is necessary to restore the VM to a backup site, where another IP addressing scheme operates, in the event of a failure of the main one.
- Cluster target - Replication tasks now support specifying a specific host or cluster as the target for replication. This makes sure that the VM will be available when it is restored (for example, on a backup site).
- Full support for DVS - Full support for distributed VMware Distributed Virtual Switches with replication technology, allowing replica status to be transferred without additional manual operations (for example, in environments with VMware vCloud Director).
- Automatic job update - failover and failback operations automatically update the replication task by excluding the VM from it and adding it again.
- Multi-select operations - in the console you can now select several VMs for replication operations. For example, in the event of a massive failure of hosts, you can perform failover operations with several VMs at once (similar to failback).
- Enhanced job configuration - Now, the Replication Pair Wizard supports vmdk-level replication configuration and provides the ability to configure resource pool, VM folder, and virtual network targets to host the replica and restore the VM.
Migrating Virtual Machines to Veeam Backup and Replication 6
- Quick Migration - this technology allows you to organize the migration of a virtual machine between hosts and/or repositories by transferring VM data in the background (while it is running), and then only the delta of vmdk files is transferred for idle time (switching). Switching is carried out using SmartSwitch technology or simply by re-loading the VM. In fact, this function is an analogue of vMotion and Storage vMotion, but with a slight VM downtime.
- SmartSwitch - This technolonia allows you to transfer the current state of VMs from the source host and storage to the source for the duration of switching the virtual machine between them (with downtime). At the same time, the processors of the source and target hosts must be compatible according to the instructions.
- Migration jobs is a new type of VM migration task. Based on your VMware vSphere license, the Migration Wizard performs one of the following tasks: VMware vMotion, VMware Storage vMotion, Veeam Quick Migration
- with SmartSwitch или Veeam Quick Migration with cold switch. This allows you to quickly transfer VMs from hosts that require urgent service or shutdown (for example, the electricity was turned off, and they are to UPS'ax) or transfer the VM to another data center with minimal impact on the availability of services in the VM.
- Instant VM Recovery integration - VM migration tasks are now optimized for Instant VM Recovery. If the migration task detects that the VM is transferred from the state when it was instantly restored (i.e. the delta is placed on the vPower NFS datastore), then the constant component of this VM is taken from the backup file, and the differences are already with the NFS storage to speed up the migration process and optimize performance.
Copy files to Veeam Backup and Replication 6
- Support for copying individual file - support for copying individual files. The file copy task is now supported in the same way as for directories.
Virtual Machine Recovery in Veeam Backup and Replication 6
- 1-click VM restore - when restoring the VM to its original location (the most common case), this can be done in one click.
- Virtual Disk Restore wizard - the new recovery mode allows you to restore individual vmdk disks to their original location or attach them to another or a new VM. At the same time, the Virtual Disk Restore wizard can restore disks as "thin" (that is, growing as data is filled), and also makes all the necessary settings in the vmdk header file.
- Hot Add restores - Veeam Backup was the first to support Hot Add technology not only for RK, but also for restoring vmdk disks, which avoids performance problems.
- Multi-VM restore - the ability to recover many VMs from the graphical interface at once, which is very convenient for cases of massive failures of storage or host servers.
- Full support for DVS - full support for VMware Distributed Virtual Switches and improvements in the interface for integration with it (which is convenient, for example, when used in conjunction with vCloud Director).
- Network mapping - When restoring virtual machines to a server or site with a different virtual network configuration, you can specify new network interaction parameters.
- moRef preservation - when restoring a VM with a replacement of an existing copy, its identifier is saved, which allows you not to reconfigure Veeam tasks, as well as third-party software that works with virtual machines by their identifier (almost all work like that).
File-level recovery in Veeam Backup and Replication 6
- Support for GPT and simple dynamic disks - File-level recovery now supports GPT and simple dynamic disks.
- Preservation of NTFS permissions - Optionally, when restoring Windows files, you can save the owner and rights to them in NTFS.
Indexing and searching for files in Veeam Backup and Replication 6 backups
- Optional Search Server - now the search on the files of the guest OS works without Microsoft Search Server. However, it is recommended for large environments with hundreds of VMs for better performance.
- Reduced catalog size - The directory size of the guest OS file system has significantly decreased, which saves space on the Veeam Backup server.
- User profile indexing - support for indexing the user profile in the guest OS has appeared.
Statistics and Reporting in Veeam Backup and Replication 6
- Enhanced real-time statistics - now real-time statistics on the tasks of the Republic of Kazakhstan have been improved in terms of design, are more often updated and more informative for the user.
- Improved job reports - PC task reports look better, have additional information, including the amount of changed data, compression level and deduplication factor.
- Bottleneck monitor - in response to the most frequent questions about poor performance in various environments, Veeam has made a new component that allows you to identify bottlenecks at various stages of RK and replication. All this is displayed in real-time statistics.
- VM loss warning - the history of the tasks of the Republic of Kazakhstan now notifies the user about virtual machines that previously backed up, and then the tasks of the Republic of Kazakhstan ceased to exist (for example, accidentally or deliberately deleted).
Veeam Backup and Replication 6 Console User Interface
- Wizard improvements - all wizards have been updated to allow quick navigation when creating PC tasks. Some wizards have become dynamic - that is, focused only on the task you want to perform.
- VM ordering - Backup and Replication wizards now allow you to specify the order in which VMs should be processed.
- Multi-user access - Multi-user access to the console is now enabled by default, allowing multiple users to access the console via RDP on the same server.
Enterprise Manager web interface in Veeam Backup and Replication 6
- Job editing - in addition to managing tasks, Enterprise Manager now allows you to change their settings for protected VMs, backup repositories, guest OS account - all directly from the web interface.
- Job cloning - existing tasks can now be cloned directly from the web interface while preserving all settings.
- Helpdesk FLR - a new File Restore Operator role has appeared in Enterprise Manager, which has been delegated authority to restore individual files. It can be assigned to help desk personnel. At the same time, files are restored to their original location, and hepl desk personnel can limit the ability to download them, and, accordingly, access to them (there are settings regarding file types, etc.).
- FIPS compliance - The web interface is now fully compatible with the FISP standard.
- Design improvements - the web interface has many improvements in terms of usability and design.
SureBackup enhancements in Veeam Backup and Replication 6
- Improved DC handling - Now improved work with domain controllers in situations where it is isolated in multi-DC environments.
- Support for unmanaged VMware Tools - SureBackup tasks now support virtual machines with manually installed VMware Tools packages.
Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots
On August 30, 2012, Veeam Software introduced a new technology in Veeam Backup & Replication. Created with HP, Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots allows IT administrators to recover virtual machines and data directly from hardware snapshots DSS HP LeftHand and HP StoreVirtual VSA.
Hardware snapshot technology SAN is used by many companies. Due to the high efficiency and low load on the production system, hardware images can be created several times a day. Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots allows administrators to recover one or more virtual machines directly from hardware SAN snapshots. The new feature significantly improves recovery point objectives (RPOs) and allows you to recover data as quickly as possible in the event of an emergency - for example, if user data is deleted by mistake, the script did not work correctly or there were problems installing updates. However, Veeam does not convert SAN hardware snapshots - it allows you to recover data directly from the original hardware snapshots.
Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots is designed to meet the needs of virtualization professionals who needed an affordable, easy-to-use, and efficient tool to recover data from SAN hardware snapshots.
Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots:
- Fast - It will take less than 2 minutes to restore the entire virtual machine or individual objects.
A fully automated process for mounting the selected SAN snapshot.
- Restore directly from the virtual machine files to the SAN hardware snapshot (without intermediate virtual machine image extraction and data recovery).
- An easy-to-use wizard that makes recovery simple and secure.
- Efficient - administrators can restore exactly what they need:
- a virtual machine;
- individual files and folders of the guest OS;
- individual Microsoft Exchange objects
- Free - Leverages existing SAN snapshot capabilities.
- No problem: An automated process eliminates human factors and protects SAN snapshot integrity and production data.
- No Agent - No agents are required on hosts and virtual machines.
- Absolutely free: Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots is included in all versions of Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5, including Veeam Backup Free Edition.
"When developing Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots, we worked closely with HP. Veeam's breakthrough capabilities enable customers to use SAN hardware snapshots to quickly recover data that may have been lost due to daily failures. New features are already built into our products, so you won't have to pay extra for them, "commented Ratmir Timashev, President and CEO of Veeam Software.
"Maintaining the competitive advantage of any organization requires a fast and reliable backup and recovery tool. Combining Veeam Backup & Replication software with HP LeftHand and HP StoreVirtual VSA solutions enables our customers to quickly recover data in their virtual environment while minimizing business losses, "said Steve Crimi, Director of Business Development and Alliances, HP.
The new functionality will be available in Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5, expected in Q4 2012, at no additional cost and will be included in all editions of Veeam Backup & Replication, including Veeam Backup Free Edition.
Other Veeam Backup and Replication 6 enhancements
- Enhanced PowerShell support - Enhanced PowerShell API capabilities to manage all Veeam Backup settings. All PowerShell cmdlets have been simplified in terms of syntax (old syntax is also supported). Masks appeared in object names, object search - all similar to the capabilities in the console.
- Log collection wizard is a new wizard that collects log files from protected hosts and prepares the package necessary when accessing Veeam technical support.
- 1-click automated upgrade-All product components, including those installed on the remote site (backup proxy servers and backup repositories), can simply be updated using the Upgrade wizard. When you open the console, Veeam Backup & Replication automatically identifies the solution components that you want to upgrade.
Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5
Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5 includes new recovery capabilities for Microsoft Exchange, HP StoreVirtual VSA, and LeftHand hardware snapshots. Another important addition is support for VMware VSphere® 5.1 and Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, making Veeam the first vendor to support both advanced hypervisors.
The new capabilities strengthen Veeam's market leadership in powerful, easy-to-use, and affordable, agent-free backup and recovery solutions designed specifically for a virtual environment. Key new features in Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5.
- Veeam Explorer for Exchange - Virtual environment administrators can view the contents of Exchange backups to find and retrieve individual Exchange objects without using additional agents. Free features include:
- View the Exchange database directly from the compressed backup file and search the database in less than two minutes.
- Search multiple Exchange databases for the right objects and object types, and advanced search capabilities.
- Export objects to a PST file, save as MSG, or send as an attachment to an email.
- Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots - Allows administrators to quickly recover some or all of the virtual machines directly from hardware SAN snapshots that can be captured during the day with little impact on system performance. This provides a short recovery time (RPO) in the event of the most common recovery scenarios: if user data is deleted by mistake, the script does not work correctly or there are problems installing updates.
- Advanced Monitoring and Reporting: The new functionality integrates monitoring, reporting, and planning for Veeam Backup & Replication in a single console using Veeam ONE 6.5, which is part of Veeam Management Suite 6.5.
- E-discovery and item recovery for Exchange Version 6.5 - the new version introduces the fully functional Veeam Explorer for Exchange - a technology for searching, viewing and restoring objects (letters, folders, users) from backups of Exchange 2010 mail servers. This can be done with VM backups, their replicas, as well as HP StoreVirtual VSA and LeftHand snapshots.
- Restore from SAN snapshots - Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots technology has appeared (so far only for HP storage), which supports granular recovery of virtual machines directly from snapshots made by HP StoreVirtual VSA and HP LeftHand storage devices. This technology is developed in conjunction with HP and supports all Veeam features: Instant VM Recovery, Instant File-Level Recovery, and Explorer for Exchange item recovery.

2011: VM Protection for HP D2D
As of May 2011, Veeam Backup & Replication, when used with HP D2D StoreOnce Backup Systems disk-based backup systems, enhances their HP StoreOnce data deduplication technology. Veeam Backup & Replication creates full copies in HP D2D Backup Systems as virtual machines running in VMware vSphere. Fully identical datasets are identified and not backed up by HP StoreOnce deduplication. Veeam Backup & Replication provides the ability to use a backup to restore data by creating a virtual machine in an isolated environment. A special backup file starts the virtual machine, reboots the operating system and checks the applications in the virtual machine.
2010: Veeam Backup & Replication 5.0
As of December 2010, Veeam Backup & Replication 5.0 includes Instant VM Recovery, which provides the ability to run a virtual machine from a pre-compressed and deduplicated backup. Using the Universal Application-Item Recovery (U-AIR) feature, specialists will be able to recover data at the level of individual objects from any virtualized applications and OS. SureBackup Recovery Verification can be used to thoroughly check all available backups for usability.
Veaam Backup & Replication runs the virtual machine in an isolated environment, simulates the boot process of the operating system, and makes sure that the virtual machine is functioning properly. The new On-Demand Sandbox sandbox sandbox mode will allow virtual machines to run from backups in a secure environment. Specialists will be able to use this functionality when testing, configuring or debugging virtual machines. Instant File-Level Recovery will simplify the recovery of a virtual machine (full or individual files) from a single image.
Veeam Backup & Replication overcomes the limitations of traditional backup and offers:
- Instant VM Recovery: Restore the virtual machine from the backup file in minutes. Users continue to work while IT personnel troubleshoot.
