2020: In Europe the unprecedented growth of Internet traffic is recorded

In Western Europe less, than in a month, Internet traffic unprecedentedly grew, testify the analysis which is carried out by Nokia in March, 2020. According to the company, in most the Western European networks it grew in comparison with 2019 by 30-45%.

On the website of Nokia article of the director of Deepfield Nokia technologies Craig Labovits containing data analysis of several Western European networks in a week since March 9, 2020 which speak about COVID-19 effects for them on March 27, 2020 is published.[1]

We considered all volumes and traffic patterns. And though the new reality only begins to have the impact, there was already obvious a number of network anomalies and trends, - Craig Labovits notes.

It carries the following facts to like those:

  • peak growth of traffic by 20–40% in the struck areas in the last four weeks and especially for the last several days;

Networks cope with this volume, however operators expected to come to this volume within a year, but not for several days, - Craig Labovits says.

On the content delivery networks (CDN) peripheral segments and peer-to-peer channels, according to him, have enough reserves. Level of aggregation and service peripheral routers (service edge routers) where demand approaches the trigger level are exposed to the greatest stress.

  • change of daily and weekly traffic patterns;

It is considered that the maximum capacity of networks in working time should cope with capacity of on-line stream traffic of 21.00 on Sunday, but already even in the working days peak volumes of stream traffic became much higher, - Craig Labovits pays attention.

  • growth of use of the applications sensitive to delays, such as Zoom and Skype and also game applications.

Summarizing, the author of article notes that in the conditions of growth of traffic of wired and wireless networks, the main loading falls on the first.

Operators need to make so that their Internet infrastructure sustained new loading. Operator networks should have necessary resources and opportunities for support of all services with a high performance in the conditions of the increased demand, - Craig Labovits says.

Besides, according to him, operators should obtain exact and detailed information on the networks in real time.

File:Aquote1.png
They need the means capable to analyze, correlate and visualize data with the speed unavailable to a human brain, - Craig Labovits is sure.

Such means, according to him, are intelligent network systems and analytical technologies of new generation. According to him, they allow to receive in real time very detailed and exact - to the level of applications - multidimensional data about networks, services, network flows and methods of use of network services.

Monitoring of global and local impact of a pandemic of COVID-19 on world networks Nokia will continue, Craig Labovits assures finally.

In the middle of March, 2020 in the EU at the level of the authorities the problem of excessive load of Internet infrastructure was recognized. The European Commission called strimingovy services for taking measures for reduction of the growing demand for capacity in the conditions of a quarantine because of a coronavirus.   Euractiv reported about it.[2]

Speed of the mobile Internet

2016: Broadband access cost in Russia is many times lower, than in Europe and the USA

Estimated cost of broadband and mobile Internet access in Russia one of the lowest in comparison with Europe, the USA and many developed countries. Came to such conclusion RIA Novosti, having compared the broadband access rates to speeds about 10 Mbps and the cost of 1 GB of mobile traffic in the different countries[3].

In Russia the estimated cost of broadband access is 350 rubles a month. On the mobile phone it is necessary to pay 120 rubles for gigabyte of the downloaded data. Such prices are comparable only to Ukrainian where the same gigabyte will cost 61 rubles. The reason of so low prices the edition calls collapses of ruble exchange rate and hryvnia. In the majority of other countries rates are higher several times.

In Europe price level differs depending on the country. Among expensive countries – Belgium, Switzerland. More available communication in Poland, Sweden, Finland. Germany can also be carried in number expensive, here monthly it is necessary to pay for the Internet from 20 euros – about 1380 rubles. The gigabyte of mobile data will cost 11-12 euros or 820 rubles. At the same time outside the cities there are problems with a covering 3G networks and 4G, and speed in ShPD network can be replacement less stated.

2013: The European Union left ambitions on development of the broadband Internet

In the middle of February, 2013 it became known of reduction of the program of the European Union for development of broadband Internet access to territories of the region. Initially the program was aimed at maintenance of construction of such networks, in particular in difficult available rural areas.

Earlier the government of the union believed that universal existence of high-speed Internet access is one of key factors for business development and, as a result, economy.

As a result the volume of the program decreased from 8.2 billion euros to only 1 billion euros – by 8 times. The European Parliament can also accept reduction twice of investments into construction of the corresponding infrastructure – from 50 billion euros to 24 billion euros.

The announced changes in the budget already caused serious disorders among activists and members of European Parliament, but finally new budget will be approved in a voting process in March-April, 2013.

So, according to Brian Condon, the director of Association of networks of broadband access (Community Broadband Network), such measures will become "a huge step backwards".

Earlier the government of the European Union, we will remind, announced ambitious plans for providing the population of the region with 100-megabit access of a half by 2020 whereas Internet access at a speed of 30 Mbps had to be provided to other half of inhabitants of the European Union. Separately 9.2 billion euros had to be selected for development of Internet access in rural areas.

The vice president of European Commission Neelie Crous (Neelie Kroes) also criticized reduction of the budget, having said that the amount of 1 billion euros just will not be enough for development of broadband networks. "I will continue to fight", - she said.
