2020: Plans to create digital profiles of students' competencies

From the 2020-2021 academic year, freshmen of Tomsk Polytechnic University will have digital competency profiles. They will help create individual learning trajectories, taking into account the peculiarities of the chosen specialty, digitalization trends and even the student's psychotype. The university announced this on April 13, 2020.

As a pilot project, digital competency profiles are created for individual groups in each engineering school of TPU. To do this, the university has created a competency matrix for the disciplines of the School of Basic Engineering Training and a prototype system for modeling and visualizing the profile.

The digital profile is a visualization of the competencies that students receive in the first or second year of the university as a result of mastering the main and additional disciplines. Studying mathematics, the student receives only competencies, which will then help him in further study and work. While attending additional classes on artificial intelligence and neural networks, he learns others. Together, they make up a complex profile of his competencies, which is easier to navigate, in which areas he needs additional knowledge, what is still lacking, and what strengths he has,
says Vladimir Guzyr, Deputy Development Director of the School of Basic Engineering Training of TPU

It is planned that students will see their profile in personal offices on the corporate portal in the form of a complex pie chart.

To create such a profile, all freshmen will undergo entrance testing to understand what competencies they already have. This study includes a number of psychological tests. They will help to find out, for example, what kind of specialist the student sees himself in the future, what strategies for mastering information are suitable for him.

After each semester, the student's profile will be supplemented based on how he handled the attestation assignments and worked during that time. The task of the digital competency profile is to reflect the dynamics, enrichment of the student's competencies. He will tell the student what online or offline courses, activities he needs to take, what needs to be'pumped' in order to become a more competitive specialist in the future,
notes Vladimir Guzyr

A number of blocks in the student's profile will be devoted to his digital competencies. In order for polytechnics to have the opportunity to improve them, the university has developed 15 modules of additional specialization (educational minors) and seven digital electives. A student of any engineering school of TPU can choose additional classes for himself, for example, in Java technologies, modern multimedia technologies, learn how to design applications. More than 500 TPU students are enrolled in digital modules of additional specialization every year.

2010: Microsoft Innovation Center at TPU - Scientific and Technological Incubator

The Microsoft Innovation Center at TPU has become a scientific and technological incubator in which students and young professionals gain knowledge and develop their own solutions in the field of information technology. Work on the projects is carried out with the support of the Center's partners - four Tomsk IT companies: Elekard Devisez, Rubius, Ellix and Kontek-Soft. The Center is attended by students not only from TPU, but also from other universities in Tomsk.

In addition, the Center regularly organizes various events and provides training programs for students, teachers and IT specialists in the region, including TechDays conferences and Microsoft festivals, as well as the semi-final in the West Siberian region of the world annual Imagine Cup technology competition.

2007: Opening of the Microsoft Innovation Center

The Microsoft Innovation Center was created on the basis of TPU in October 2007.
