Tim Draper - one of pioneers of venture business of the USA, the venture capitalist in third generation and the cofounder of Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) venture capital company which is the world leader of venture investment into the technology companies at initial and early stages of development.

Biography and career

Tim Dreyper gained the diploma of the electrical engineer of the Stanford University (Stanford University) and also the diploma of the Master of business administration of the Harvard business school (Harvard Business School).

Dreyper began the venture activity since 1985 when he founded Draper Fisher Jurvetson venture capital company. Since then he is the Managing director of this company. Dreyper created network of child venture funds DFJ which are in 26 leading technology centers of the world.

In general, Tim Dreyper personally invested in 116 companies and got profit which by 6.5 times exceeded the amount of investments.

Dreyper is the author of the original idea to implement "viral marketing" in e-mail which implementation provided distribution of Internet products in geometrical progression and which became a basis of Hotmail and Yahoo! of Mail and also was accepted as the standard instrument of marketing by hundreds of other companies. Tim Dreyper was also the first venchurny investor of such companies as: Parametric Technology (PMTC), Tumbleweed Communications (TMWD), Overture.com (OVER), Digidesign (AVID), Preview Travel (TVLY), Four11 (YHOO), Combinet (CSCO) and Redgate (AOL).

One of the last investments of Tim Dreyper is the investment in Skype company which developed the innovative technology of telephone communication on the Internet. This technology allows to call anyone anywhere in the world at the price 10 times less normal communication.

Tim Dreyper made two successful venture investments into developers from Russia - Parametric Technology and Coatue. The first was created in 1985 by professor of the Leningrad university S. Geyzberg emigrating in 1974 to the USA and working there in the development area of CAD/CAM systems. At the exit from it Dreyper could gain 175-fold income. The second company with development center in Novosibirsk was successfully sold to AMD.

Tim Dreyper's grandfather, the general William G. Dreyper Starshy, was the first professional venture capitalist on the western coast of the USA where he in 1958 founded Gaiter & Anderson company. Before, holding the deputy commander's position United States Army, the general Dreyper was responsible for economic recovery of Germany and Japan within Plan of Marshall.

Tim Dreyper's father, William G. Dreyper the Third, for many years was engaged in venture business. He was an investor and the founder of such known companies as: Apollo Computer (Hewlett Packard was purchased), Dionex, Integrated Genetics (Genzyme), Quantum, Qume (I.T.T.), Activision (Mediagenic), Xidex (Eastman Kodak), Measurex, Hybritech (Eli Lilly) and also LSI Logic. During the period from 1985 to 1995 it headed Export-import bank of the USA and "The program of development of the UN' (UNDP). Since 1995 it returned to venture business, having founded Draper International company which concentrated the activity on venture investments in India.
