In comparison with the single-level FAST VP systems provides a performance benefit of applications to 40% and on as much cuts down expenses, requiring 87% less than magnetic disks and consuming energy is 75% less. The energy efficiency of VMAX with software of FAST VP will allow customers to reduce in 2011 energy consumption more than by 270 million kilowatt-hours – it enough for supply with energy of 24,400 apartment houses.
  • The built-in virtual server provides unprecedented scaling to the sizes allowing to support 5 million virtual machines using one array of VMAX. Support of VMware of API for 800% accelerates solving of tasks of management and resource allocation and for 300% — problems of replication and data transfer.
  • Software of Federated Live Migration forms new category of storage systems, for the first time allocating disk arrays with the built-in functionality for solving of tasks of technology upgrade with zero time of idle times of applications and 75% economy of resources, time of migration and planning.
  • New software of Symmetrix Enginuity it is capable to double performance and fully uses the Intel® Xeon® technology which is built in VMAX for doubling of processing speed of transactions of OLTP and requests of DSS. These new performance measures of the most reliable in the world of operating environment of data storage allow a system to work even quicker, increasing the volume of the processed data.
  • Hardware encryption protects the saved information without prejudice to performance. The built-in RSA Data Protection Manager technology protects data at the level of the drive and offers enhanced capabilities on key management that in combination with the existing security technologies of VMAX leads to creation of the unique completely protected multi-user infrastructure of data storage.
  • The built-in support of standard 10 of Gigabit Ethernet means that it is the first and only array of data storage supporting the joint networks on all types a host platforms including virtual servers, open systems and mainframes. Besides, the built-in support of Ethernet can be used for remote replication in IP networks of the increased extent and provides more than 50% economy of expenses on communication services in comparison with competitive products.
  • The built-in support of Symmetrix VMAX of the perspective protocol of the converged Fibre Channel over Ethernet networks (FCoE) allowing to build a single network for deployment of cloud infrastructure and expanding a circle of customers who can use the first-class storage functions of Symmetrix VMAX at lower price.
  • Enhanced capabilities of Federated Live Migration (FLM) – the first and the only built-in functionality of an array in the industry for migrations from old storage systems on new.   • The improved security at the expense of the appeared support of external servers of keys when using RSA Data Protection Manager for Symmetrix VMAX D@RE (enciphering of data-at-rest). External control and earlier announced built-in key management provide with keys a flexibility maximum for data security at the level of disks. VMAX 40K

On May 30, 2012 EMC at the forum EMC World 2012 provided the new EMC VMAX family, the including VMAX 10K, VMAX 20K and the newest model of this VMAX 40K family. The new EMC VMAX family ‒ is an extensive line of the corporate arrays of data storage constructed on the architecture of Virtual Matrix Architecture for the first time provided in April, 2009 leading in the industry. Besides, the new EMC VMAX family plays a role of the leading node of accomplishment of a large number of new program features which accelerate work and expand a range of application of the arrays of VMAX which proved the advantage in the market on new nodes and applications, providing also integration of the existing resources of storage of customers into the uniform unified pool of resources of data storage. Thanks to these new opportunities the scalable EMC VMAX family offers the most powerful and reliable, most effective and intellectual corporate infrastructure of information storage for implementation of a hybrid cloud.

Core of the EMC VMAX family is the new array of VMAX 40K – the revolutionary product setting new standards of performance, capacity and scalability in the market of corporate DWH. Providing more than three times big and twice more formatted capacity in comparison with any other corporate system of data storage, VMAX 40K is best adapted for support of hyper consolidation of the most exacting applications in the world for Big Data, transaction processing, analytics and cloud applicaions.

Customers even more often pass to model of a hybrid cloud (hybrid cloud) which provides them flexibility and freedom of choice at information storage and work with it, saving at the same time an opportunity to control their crucial applications. The hybrid cloud allows them to manage business more smart and more effectively. By means of the new products EMC provides to customers:

1) big power

  • using up to 32 2.8-GHz six-nuclear Intel® Xeon® processors, up to 2 Tbyte mirrored (1 Tbyte useful) memories of DDR3 DRAM capable to error correction (ECC), and having twice bigger capacity of the internal bus in comparison with initial EMC VMAX, new VMAX 40K provides unsurpassed performance level and scalings. Having more than three times bigger steady capacity at a cache misses and (IOPS) exceeding twice the general speed of input-output operations per second, than any competing model, EMC VMAX 40K really is the representative of a new class of products;
  • VMAX 40K provides support to 4 PBytes of formatted capacity – twice more, than at VMAX 20K, and it is almost three times more, than at 1.5-petabyte VMAX 10K. The new option High Density of the VMAX 40K model uses 2.5' a SAS disks for support to 3.2 PBytes of formatted capacity. This configuration 1/3 more compact and consumes 1/3 less than the power, than equivalent with 3.5' - drives.
  • new 2.5' the disks eMLC (Multi-Level Cell) (EFD) provide with Enterprise Flash performance, reliability and service life similar to disks of SLC type, but at lower price, than at comparable to them 3.5' to SLC EFD.   • the functionality of Federated Tiered Storage (FTS) provides integrity checking of all active data on external arrays for protection against the razed damages of data. Such damage can happen in the arrays which do not have function of own integrity checking. The EMC VMAX and EMC VNX families provide the built-in strict integrity checking of data – such opportunity is given only by EMC;
  • fast providing the hint (instruction) to FAST on remote devices of replication provides proper placement of data for optimal performance in case of overcoming failure/return to the previous status – the functionality which is present only at EMC;
  • EMC RecoverPoint for EMC VMAX performs local and remote heterogeneous replication of the corporate level for EMC VMAX with a possibility of data recovery on the set timepoint. It provides to all EMC VMAX family and also a virtual storage system of EMC VPLEX necessary flexibility, allowing to replicate to about heterogeneous resources in combination with a possibility of recovery to the set point;

3) big intellectuality

  • the new functionality of Federated Tiered Storage gives an opportunity to customers to consolidate and simplify work of the various resources of data storage and management of them. Placing heterogeneous arrays of information storage behind EMC VMAX, customers can use the reliable software of Symmetrix SRDF and TimeFinder for ensuring business continuity, FAST VP technology now — for performance improvement and also other means for life extension and increase in value of the existing storage arrays in a data processing center;
  • the FAST VP technology for work with volumes of CKD on mainframes provides advantages on performance, profitability and scalability of FAST VP to workloads and applications on mainframes;
  • virtual providing resources and FAST VP for IBM i (disks with formatting of D910) – earlier limited to scaling of performance only with the drives 15,000-ob/mines EMC VMAX – the first platform of data storage introducing advantages of "thin" providing resources and automatic distribution of information on levels to customers of IBM i. This functionality is present only at EMC;
  • the latest version of EMC ProSphere® gives an ability to manage server, network resources and resources of data storage from one screen. ProSphere announces use of resources of a host according to statutory rules of FAST now, improving the reporting in the environment of FAST VP. ProSphere shows also extrinsic capacitance imported through FTS, providing the single console of administration for the analysis and removal of the reporting under all capacity consumed on the scale of DPC including VMAX and extrinsic integrated capacitance;

4) more high efficiency

  • new Unisphere for EMC VMAX ‒ is the expanded interface of administration which simplifies and accelerates work of storage systems and management of them, providing at the same time a general view and control facilities for all EMC VMAX family and also the family EMC VNX, EMC VPLEX and the products RecoverPoint. Unisphere for EMC VMAX ‒ simpler, fast and intuitive technology which provides to administrators of EMC VMAX deep monitoring of use and performance in real time;
  • the new integrated support of ProSphere for monitoring of use and billing on the basis of statutory rules in FAST VP – the functionality which is present only at EMC.

EMC VMAX 10K

In January, 2013 EMC announced upgrade of industry-leading family of the solutions EMC VMAX for work with applications, crucial for business, in virtual environments of VMware at the enterprises of any size — systems became even more powerful, intellectual, reliable and effective. The EMC VMAX 10K system — a product of the VMAX family of initial level — provides the performance level, highest in the class, with indicators is twice higher, than at her predecessor. Besides, EMC provided a number of the new features realized in solutions of the EMC VMAX family (10K, 20K and 40K) which became available thanks to significantly to the updated software of VMAX Enginuity. As clients transform the IT environment, developing the virtualized hybrid clouds, before them there is a problem of consolidation of applications, crucial for business. According to the research IDC clients call EMC supplier No. 1 in a segment of storage systems for crucial environments worldwide. Fresh updates allow to perform virtualization and to make process of transition to clouds simpler and more effective, than earlier.

  • Performance of crucial applications in the virtualized environments grew to 100%, thanks to support of more powerful processors with the doubled number of cores and the increased their clock rate. It made operation of applications of a type of Oracle OLTP in environments of VMware 90% faster.
  • Improvement of data protection from thefts and function of compliance to regulatory requirements of the industries (in particular, government institutions and health care) with the help of the Data At Rest Encryption function (D@RE) allows to make enciphering of all data on any types of carriers without prejudice to performance. (Earlier only for VMAX 20K and VMAX 40K).
  • The maximum cost reduction thanks to an opportunity to set additional levels of storage (including storage systems of third-party suppliers) on the existing system. Support of the Federated Tiered Storage function reduces total ownership cost by 15%. (Earlier only for VMAX 20K and VMAX 40K).

  • Improvement of controllability and performance improvement with a new feature of Host I/O Limits for the VMAX family which provides more predictable performance level simplifies control in the conditions of the consolidated and multirent environments. Now the client himself selects the number of the transactions IOPS or capacity for the specific application, or the user. This function is especially important for cloud environments and consolidation of a set of crucial applications.
  • The highest performance measures for environments of VMware vSphere® 5 exceeding a threshold in 2 million transactions of input-output per second (for VMAX 40K).
  • The solution EMC Unisphere for the VMAX family simplifies management, thanks to the improved integration into the platforms VMware, VFCache, Windows 2012 and an opportunity to control all basic functions of VMAX.
  • The increased system effectiveness of FAST VP with support of the industry-leading standard of 4-level storage and compression of "cold" data allows to reduce volumes of storage of inactive data twice.
