2020: The announcement of development of quartz optical fiber for onboard and industrial data networks

On August 7, 2020 the Schwabe company announced State Corporation Rostec implementation of the partner project on development of quartz optical fibers for onboard and industrial data networks at gigabit speeds. The fiber steady against vibrations and pollution will be able to replace traditional cables in communication networks of air, marine and railway transport. Development will also promote creation of industrial communication networks of the next generation.

According to the company, quartz optical fiber differs in the increased diameter of a core – 100 microns against 50-62.5 microns at analogs. Thanks to such diameter the cable provides reliability of a data network and is suitable for the cable systems operated in a corrosive environment. Development maintains data transfer rate in standard transceivers at the level of 10 Gbps and allows to pass to other speed – for example, from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps, without additional adaptation of infrastructure.

Product characteristics allow to create communication networks of the next generation on its basis. So, on industrial production optical fiber can ensure functioning of the systems of Internet of Things (IoT), Tactile Internet and augmented reality (AR). Prototypes of a product passed a series of tests, ahead one more test phase and creation of the demonstration stand.

Development will also be applied as a part of onboard cable systems of data transmission of different function. It is about the equipment executing information transfer from navigation instruments, the systems of telemetry, telemechanics, scheduling, office traffic. Fiber will be able to be used at equipment of ways of data transmission in aircrafts, spacecrafts, railway locomotives, passenger and freight trains, the subway.

It is going to implement a product also on water platforms – as a part of sea and river crafts, including freighters and industrial bases, passenger liners, research and oil and gas extraction vessels, ice breakers.

Optical fibers are an optimal solution at creation of onboard and industrial data networks of different function. Among advantages - the small weight, convenient installation, immunity to electromagnetic interferences and also intrinsic safety and the increased bandwidth. If to speak about a 5G where the data deference should be ultralow, up to nanoseconds, then our product will solve the problem of time-and-frequency providing existing in networks of the previous generation.

Sergey Popov, the deputy CEO of Schwabe for Research and Development, the head of the priority technology direction on technologies of optoelectronics and photonics told

The startup is implemented by one of residents of the innovation center "Skolkovo"Optofayber Lab company. Support to the project is given by the State optical institute of S.I. Vavilov which is a part of "Schwabe". The enterprise is responsible for a scientific and technical part of the project, participates in tests, makes and supplies parts and prototypes of products. As partners the Volga region state university of telecommunications and informatics (Samara) and Kanon company (Ufa) also act.
