2021: Creation of a cloud simulator for training university students in NPP management

In April 2021, it became known about the creation of a cloud simulator for training students of specialized universities in nuclear power plant management. This is the development of the All-Russian Research Institute for the Operation of Nuclear Power Plants (JSC VNIIAES, part of Rosenergoatom).

According to the press service of Rosatom, the basis of the new system was the adapted programs of conventional simulators installed in the training units (UTP) of each of the nuclear power plants. They allow modeling neutron-physical processes in the reactor core, thermohydraulic processes in the first and second circuits, as well as electrical processes in power supply systems.

To use simulators, you need a computer or smartphone with access to the Internet. Technology allows you to conduct training in several groups and universities. For training with different power units, reconfiguration of all equipment is not required.

By April 9, 2021, the simulator was deployed in the cloud of the Kalininsky data center. At the same time, the improvement of its design and refinement of programs continues, as well as the development of automated training sessions.

Rosatom expects that cloud simulator technologies will be in demand not only in nuclear energy, but will also be able to enter adjacent markets, for example, the traditional energy market. For basic training and understanding of basic technological processes, the benefits of cloud technology are obvious.

Given the fact that ROSATOM is building a large number of nuclear power plants abroad, the resource is the use of cloud simulators for the initial training of foreign specialists at the university training stage, several years before the launch of the power unit, when they do not yet have access to the training units of the NPP, said Igor Fedorov, head of the Department of Mathematical Simulation of Dynamics of the VNIIAES NPP[1]
