Russian Railways implement IT infrastructure on the platform of the solutions Hitachi Data Systems

On October 14, 2014 it became known of an implementation project of the systems of virtualization and DWH of Hitachi Data Systems in Russian Railways company.

Project Progress

As Yury Skachkov, the CEO of HDS in Russia and the CIS reported, cooperation of the company with Russian Railways began in 2008 and actively continues as of October 14, 2014.

Earlier Japanese company did not manage to enter a supplier list of IT solutions for the Russian railroad workers.

Roman Lykov, the head of the department of informatization and corporate management processes of the Russian Railway, noted: "For October 14, 2014 more than a half of IT infrastructure of the main transport company of the country is based on servers and storage systems of HDS".

Alexey Illarionov, the vice president for information technologies and development of a management system of the Russian Railway, told: "HDS is directly involved in joint development and deployment of hardware-software solutions for crucial information systems of the company. Work is conducted in three main directions: virtualization of computing resources, consolidation of information systems and creation of a corporate cloud. A reference part of IT infrastructure which includes 25 storage systems of the senior class (with a total amount over 3 PBytes), more than 100 systems of the average level, about 1.5 thousand high-end lezviyny servers and administration system now is in parallel upgraded".

The project on virtualization is in a closing stage. For October 14, 2014 in the Russian Railway more than 3 thousand (two thirds of a total quantity) servers are virtualized. Amount of data on virtual servers is more than 2 PBytes.

Are going to complete the project of virtualization of servers in the Russian Railway until the end of 2015.

As the platform for creation of virtual environment in the Russian Railway the lezviyny Hitachi CB2000 servers and also Hitachi HUS130 storage systems were used.

In RUSSIAN RAILWAY 730 different information systems work, and the company continues the project on consolidation of their computing resources. The most important and responsible information systems which are responsible for management of freight transportation, sale of passenger tickets, execution of consignment notes, management of financial and labor resources are already consolidated. All these systems which are earlier placed in 14 remote data processing centers are transferred to three head DPC, at the same time the consolidated amount of data was more than 3 PBytes, including personal data of more than 900 thousand staff of the company. As a result it was succeeded to reduce the cost of ownership of IT infrastructure by 30%. Level of availability of critical information systems was at the same time trebled (to an indicator of 99.99%), and labor productivity of IT personnel grew by 7%. A number of the local systems which continue to be operated in regional data-processing centers was not involved in the project of consolidation. RUSSIAN RAILWAY Disk arrays of the senior class became a hardware basis for consolidation of information systems — Hitachi USP V and VSP. Besides, in data centers railroad workers the multiple model of backup is implemented. As storage of backup copies of the first level the virtual tape library Hitachi Virtual Tape Library (FalconStor) is used here.

The Russian Railway are going to complete creation of cloud infrastructure by 2017.
