On December 18, 2017 the Madrid clinic of General Hospital Universitario together with the Spanish company Exovite announced start of the innovation project on use of Microsoft HoloLens technology for the help to surgeons of malignant tumors in muscles at a distance.

The HoloSurg system provides a set of the virtual interactive panels projected in sight of the surgeon and allows to see at the same time real and virtual objects.

On these panels the vital information about the patient, such as surgical atlas, x-ray and tomographic images in 2D and 3D, allowing surgeons to find precisely location of tumors which need to be deleted are displayed.

HoloLens allows to display this information in any place, comfortable for the doctor, scanning the premises with all objects which are in it and creating the three-dimensional map of a real environment.

The sizes of virtual panels can be changed, they can be configured and moved with simple gestures and voice commands. For example, the surgeon can enlarge the image or turn three-dimensional model of the part of the body of the operated patient interesting him.

The mixed reality allows surgeons to address quickly crucial information, saving a possibility of interaction with the real world, including with other physicians and patients. Traditional headsets of virtual reality do not give such chance.

One more advantage of this system — an opportunity to write or broadcast live what is seen by the surgeon. It is the tool for training and practice. Finally, the HoloSurg system allows to operate more precisely and quicker, reducing risk.
