Changing the borders of Israel and Palestine from 1946 to 2020

2023

Attempts to forcibly resettle 2.3 million Palestinians on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula

In October 2023, the Associated Press wrote that the Israeli government had prepared a plan to relocate 2.3 million residents of the Gaza Strip to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.

Then the Financial Times reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to convince European leaders to put pressure on Egypt to accept refugees there.

Soon after, the Israeli prime minister's office tried to soften the situation, calling the plan a "concept document" that means nothing.

However, the story has already provoked a reaction from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, who said that his country is not going to accept Palestinian refugees, and the problem of their resettlement lies on the shoulders of Israel.

As the Egyptian channel @ TheMediterraneanMan noted, this is not the first time Israel has planned to forcibly relocate Palestinians to the Sinai Peninsula.

Back in 2010, Netanyahu, who was already in the post of prime minister, during a conversation with former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak proposed a similar scenario, which he was refused.

The current Egyptian President Al-Sisi and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have repeatedly stated since 2013 that there will be no resettlement of Palestinians to the Sinai Peninsula, and they will live on their territory.

Netanyahu's plan to resettle Gaza residents, which has been in the works for more than a decade, would make life easier for ultra-Orthodox authorities in Israel, but would make the situation in the neighboring country much more complicated.

However, Egypt is not ready to make concessions and destabilize the already difficult domestic political situation, given that the Palestinians themselves reject such a scenario.

UN: Israel's disproportionate strikes on Gaza over two years is a war crime

Disproportionate strikes Israel on Gaza from May 2021 to August 2023 constitute a war crime, and the ban on the importation of humanitarian aid into Gaza violates international law, the commission said UN in October 2023.

The collective punishment imposed by Israel on Gaza's population by imposing blockades and bombing on densely populated areas is a war crime, a spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said later in October 2023 at a briefing in Geneva.

Refusal to recognize the existence of the Palestinian nation, history and language, as well as the map of "Great Israel" with the territories of Jordan

"There is no such thing as a Palestinian nation. There is no Palestinian history. There is no Palestinian language, "Israeli Finance Minister extremist Bezalel Smotrich said in March 2023.

The Palestinian National Authority responded by calling on the International Criminal Court to arrest Smotrich.

In addition, at the event, Smotrich presented a map of "Great Israel," which includes the territory of Jordan, to which the Jordanian Foreign Ministry reacted sharply as expected.

Israel's new illegal settlements in the Palestinian West Bank

In early 2023, the Israeli government, led by Netanyahu, decided to officially legalize 9 Jewish outposts within the administrative borders of Palestine on the west bank of the Jordan as settlements.

Such measures have not been taken since 2012, and none of the key countries on the planet officially recognizes Israeli expansion in the territory of the Palestinian National Authority.

However, despite the declared disapproval, no state actually opposes violations of the agreements between Palestine and Israel.

Supreme Court - BAGAC

2023

BAGAC deprived of the right to cancel government decisions

On July 24, 2023, a law was finally passed to abolish the eligibility standard.

The eligibility standard test is the power of Israel's Supreme Court of Justice (BAGAC) to overturn any decisions of the government or individual ministries, citing that they do not conform to the spirit of the country's legislation. In fact, it gave the court almost unchecked veto power over any decisions by the authorities.

This is what the far-right authorities refer to, accusing the BAGAC of being undemocratic and having emergency powers. The opposition believes that this government is trying to usurp power, and the court takes an unbiased position, defending the rule of law in the country.

One way or another, on July 24, the decision was made, and this unties the far-right hands. Despite the fact that BAGAC still retains some opportunities to limit the actions of the authorities, key powers have already begun to be canceled.

As expected, having won time and let the protests run out of steam in January-April, the authorities returned to reform again. This time, the government enlisted the support of ultra-conservative segments of the population organizing actions in support of the new laws.

Massive protests of citizens against judicial reform

Since the beginning of 2023, massive protests have not subsided in Israel against the judicial reform put forward by the far-right coalition government led by Benjamin Netanyahu.

Week after week, more citizens took to the streets until the situation culminated: the current authorities suspended consideration of the reform until the summer session of parliament.

But why are citizens protesting precisely against this package of laws introduced by the ruling coalition?

If you do not hit in particular and many compromise options, then it all comes down to four key points:

  • Review the right of the Supreme Court (BAGAC) to repeal any laws considered by Parliament (Knesset). According to the amendments, parliament could overcome the court's veto with a simple majority of votes in a second vote.

  • To strengthen the influence of the current government on the election of members of the Supreme Court: it was proposed to change the composition of the committee participating in the selection to include more members from the cabinet.

  • Change the rule that the government must necessarily obey the decisions of its legal adviser, giving it a advisory character. Benjamin Netanyahu in January 2023 had to dismiss Minister Arie Deri after the corresponding decision of the BAGAC and his support by the legal adviser of the government.

  • Now, according to the adopted law, only he himself or the Cabinet of Ministers can recognize the Prime Minister as incapacitated by a majority of 2/3 of the vote. Previously, a legal adviser to the government could raise the issue of incapacity.

The last point is especially important, because the corruption trial continues against Netanyahu and many believe that he simply defended himself in this way.

The initiators of the reform believe that the Israeli Supreme Court has too much power. The authority may repeal, at its discretion, government regulations or laws that it considers unconstitutional.

In addition, BAGAC judges are not directly elected, and the decision to appoint to its composition is made by a committee, the majority of which consists of other judges and lawyers, which makes the judiciary a closed structure with superpowers.

All this, according to the ruling coalition, contradicts the will of the people who elect their representatives to parliament and whose decisions the BAGAC can cancel at any time. And in general, this is true, the Rybar channel noted, but at the same time Israel is a parliamentary republic: the parties that won the Knesset elections form the government through agreements.

That is, in fact, if the Supreme Court loses its authority to vet key decisions, then the ruling coalition will be able to pass any laws and resist this legally will be almost impossible.

Government

Israel is a parliamentary republic and the entire executive power is owned by the government and the prime minister.

The president of the country is a nominal figure.

2022: Netanyahu elected prime minister for third time with ultra-Orthodox backing

To form a government, Netanyahu, who became prime minister for the third time in November 2022, entered into a coalition with several far-right parties. Some of them represent the interests of ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredi) in the Knesset.

In addition to the fact that society actively opposes the dictatorship of the far right, and people have already aroused distrust of bills that facilitate corrupt officials' path to power, radicals and ultra-Orthodox are promoting initiatives that are extremely dubious for the secular part of society. Among them are the expansion of the powers of rabbinical courts, the refusal to adopt a law on domestic violence, the mandatory quota of haredim in state institutions, regardless of qualifications, attempts to equate certificates of religious educational institutions with diplomas and others.

In 2023, several MPs tried to push through a bill banning persuading people of a different faith to change their views, while stressing that it was aimed primarily at Christians. This caused resentment among American evangelicals, traditionally supporting Israel in the United States.

And this is not to mention the fact that the extremely radical actions of Ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gwir are increasingly exacerbating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Israel's relations with traditional allies. Corruption, inadequate actions of the far right and the desire of the ruling coalition to usurp power are just a consequence. The government didn't come out of nowhere: some parties that just 20 years ago might have seemed marginal were indeed voted for by the country's citizens. The reason is the increase in the number of Haredi - ultra-Orthodox Jews (see the population of Israel for more information about them.

Therefore, in the protests of 2023, Israeli society is worried not only about the usurpation of power by a separate group of people. They are also concerned about what path the country will take. And whether Israel will remain conditionally secular and democratic or a radical religious path awaits it, the Rybar channel noted.

2024: Freeze funding for ultra-Orthodox seminaries if their students do not serve in the military during conflict with Hamas

In March 2024, during the ongoing conflict with Palestinian Hamas, Israel's Supreme Court passed a ruling freezing funding for ultra-Orthodox seminaries if their students do not serve in the military.

Ultra-Orthodox parties in the ruling coalition, assured that their decade-long immunity from conscription would be permanent, were furious, calling the decision "Cain's sign" and threatening to quit the government.

Religion

Haredim - Ultra-Orthodox Jews

By 2022, the Israeli society is rapidly growing a layer of haredim - ultra-Orthodox families living according to strict religious canons and poorly integrated into society. Most of them live in comparative poverty, almost do not serve in the military, and according to some reports, they pay only 2% of income tax from the total population of the country.

The authorities are actively trying to involve them in labor activity, as well as involve them in the army in special battalions: partially, this even helped.

But Haredim have 6-7 children, which means that their number, like political representation, will grow more and more. By some estimates, with the current growth rate, one in four Israelis will be ultra-Orthodox by 2040.

And of course, these people do not vote for secular, left or liberal parties, but the most radical right and religious. It was thanks to a coalition with the Haredi in 2022 that Netanyahu was able to take over as prime minister of Israel for the third time.

Haredi attacks on Christians

During the celebration of Orthodox Easter in Jerusalem in 2023, local ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredi) repeatedly attacked Christians.

Videos circulated online showing Haredi spitting towards Christians or scolding nuns.

Criticism from the Greek Orthodox Church was caused by the restrictions created by the Israeli authorities on the number of believers who are allowed to attend the ceremony of the descent of the holy fire in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Against this background, a large BBC article was published , which also mentions the increasing attacks of ultra-Orthodox Christians - both local and visiting religious buildings on holidays.

Journalists noted that Haredim are seizing more territory in Jerusalem, and the number of Christian population has decreased from a quarter at the beginning of the last century to 2% in 2022.

Cemetery waiting for the Messiah

The world's most expensive Jewish cemetery on the slopes of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, just across from the Golden Gate. According to the Midrash (interpretation of Holy Scripture in Judaism), it is from here that the resurrection of the dead will begin on the day of the arrival of the Messiah, who will go from the Mount of Olives to the Temple.

On October 8, 2023, the Israeli Military-Political Cabinet voted to introduce the "40 Alef" clause - this is considered an official declaration of war.

It was previously put into operation exactly 50 years ago - during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. The IDF command warned the country's citizens that the state was facing "difficult times." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the war would be "long and difficult."

Conflict with Palestinians over Israeli raids on Al-Aqsa Mosque on Temple Mount

Clashes between Israelis and Palestinians take place almost annually amid the Muslim holy holiday of Ramadan and the Jewish celebration of Passover. And 2023 was no exception.

On the night of April 4-5, Israeli security forces stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount, where Palestinians barricaded themselves, trying to stay there for a night prayer.

Under earlier agreements with the Jordanian-administered Jerusalem Waqf, which controls Al-Aqsa, the mosque was due to be closed to the public overnight in 2023. However, Muslims were provoked by the actions of individual Jewish fanatics who announced their intention to sacrifice on the Temple Mount, which is generally prohibited by the tenets of Judaism. One way or another, several hundred believers were detained in Al-Aqsa using special means, 50 people were injured.

That same night, Palestinian groups from the Gaza Strip fired at the south of Israel - most of the missiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system, but several shells hit Sderot. The Israeli Air Force has traditionally responded with attacks on Gaza and Hamas facilities in the sector.

After the incident, representatives of Palestine announced plans to contact the UN. The victims were supported by the Arab states and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

At night, the assault on Al-Aqsa was repeated again - the Israelis broke into the religious building and drove the Muslims out of there.

The next day, Palestinian groups from Lebanon fired 34 rockets at Israeli cities, a small part of which hit civilian targets in the city of Shlomi.

After assessing the situation and a meeting of the Israeli military-political cabinet, the Israeli Air Force attacked the previously identified positions of Palestinians in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon announced plans to file a complaint with the UN Security Council. At the same time, representatives of the UNIFIL international peacekeeping mission in the demarcation zone between Lebanon and Israel said that they were in contact with the parties to the conflict and they did not seek escalation.

It is noteworthy that the Lebanese Hezbollah did not take responsibility for what was happening, but Israel believes that without the knowledge of the organization, the attack would not have happened.

In parallel, Arab riots and terrorist attacks began in Israel and the West Bank. At Hamr junction, three Israelis were shot by Palestinians. In Tel Aviv, a car driven by an Arab was hit by seven people, one of them died.

On Sunday, Muslims barricaded themselves again in Al-Aqsa, but this time Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered security officials to stop the raids on the Temple Mount, which was supported by part of the government ministers and Israeli Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef.

At the same time, this caused discontent on the far right - the ultra-right Minister of National Security Itamar bin Gwir called the decision a mistake and organized a march of thousands of Israelis in the West Bank of the Jordan to show that "the people of Israel will not leave this land."

2022: Temporary refusal to supply weapons to Ukraine during Russia's special operation

In October 2022, during a special operation by Russia, Israel officially announced that it would not supply weapons to Ukraine.

"I am the Minister of Defence and I am responsible for the export of Israeli weapons. I want to make it clear that we will not sell weapons to Ukraine, "Israeli Defense Minister Beni Gantz said.

Earlier, former Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu opposed his country's supply of weapons to Ukraine. According to him, there is a risk that Iran will have the weapons transferred to Ukraine and will be used against Israel itself.

2021: Isaac Herzog elected president of Israel

Isaac Herzog, a veteran politician and descendant of a prominent Israeli family, was elected president of Israel in June 2021.

Herzog, 60, is the former head of Israel's Labour Party and opposition leader who unsuccessfully fought Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the 2015 parliamentary election.

He comes from a prominent Zionist family: his grandfather was Israel's chief rabbi until 1959, his father, Chaim Herzog, was Israel's ambassador to the United Nations before being elected president. His uncle, Abba Eban, was Israel's first foreign minister and ambassador to the United Nations and the United States.

1947: Why Stalin Created Israel: A Version of the Exchange of Support for US Nuclear Secrets

The results of the 1947 UN vote on the division of Palestine into two states - Arab and Jewish - surprised even future Israeli leaders. It was obvious to many that Stalin himself was behind the decision to support the creation of a Zionist state with the capital in Jerusalem, but what prompted the "father of peoples" to take such a step remained a mystery until now. A completely new - very controversial, but curious - version of the historical event in 2019 was proposed by the famous Israeli lawyer Alex Raskin. Below are excerpts from his interview with "MK."

  • In my opinion, the state of Israel owes its existence to Solomon Mikhoels [public and theater figure Solomon Mikhoels was killed under the guise of an accident on January 12, 1948 in Minsk - Auth.]. The role of Mikhoels in this vein has never been considered by any historian.

As for Stalin, there is no doubt that he was actually a key figure in the formation of Israel. Stalin did not just agree with the creation of a Zionist state in Palestine, but clearly set himself a goal that he achieved at all costs.

By November 1947, 58 countries were members of the UN. To make a positive decision "For," two-thirds of the UN General Assembly had to vote. On November 26, 1947, a preliminary vote was held. It is quite possible that it began to be considered "preliminary" after the results that were unsuccessful for Israel became known: for - 25, against - 13, with 17 abstentions. The Philippines, Paraguay and Thailand were absent from the first vote. By November 29, representatives of the first two countries were delivered to the meeting. Why the Thai delegation did not come is not known to this day.

On November 29, 1947, the results were different: for - 33, against - 13 and abstained - 10. The milestone was passed.

It was believed that between November 26 and 29 there was active explanatory work with vacillators, which gave positive results.

After voting at the UN during the Israeli war for Independence, the Czechoslovak authorities supplied weapons to Israel. It is clear on whose order they acted. There is also a version (Israel denies it) about the participation of Soviet officers in the 1947 war with the Arab states, as instructors.

Apparently, there was a secret school in Tashkent in which specialists were trained - Jews who were officially declared dead or missing during the Patriotic War.

In any case, about twenty years ago, I had a chance to meet with people who claimed that their relative, who disappeared in 43-45, was seen in shortly after the end of the war in Tashkent, and then many years later in Israel.

By 1947, England had declared its unwillingness to renew its mandate in Palestine. In addition, countries such as New Zealand, Canada, Australia, which are countries of the British Commonwealth, voted for Israel. England itself abstained from voting on ethical grounds.

Golda Meir believed that Stalin helped Israel on humane grounds. Such a "romantic" conviction of Golda once again indicates that Stalin's actions were not clear to anyone. To no one. Except - Solomon Michaels...

I am inclined to believe that Stalin, with the help of Mikhoels, made a deal with the Zionist movement: an atomic bomb in exchange for Israel.

Let's go back to 1943. Mikhoels, along with the poet Isaac (Itzik) Fefer, goes to America. Fefer was directly supervised by deputy. The head of the department, General Elizar Reichman.

Apparently, before the trip, both met with Lawrence Beria. The official purpose of the trip is to raise funds from the wealthy Jewish public for the defense industry of the USSR, in order to accelerate the Victory over Nazi Germany.

In my assumption, the real task of Mikhoels was to agree with representatives of the International Jewish Congress on a deal with Stalin. And Fefer had to "look after" Mikhoels and be in touch with Lubyanka to resolve operational issues.

At that moment, such a deal was beneficial to all parties. The USSR lagged behind the United States in the development of a nuclear bomb, and what is even worse from Germany. For the Zionists, this was also the only chance to create Israel.

Imagine that Stalin would not have done all this work at the UN and then it is quite possible that the reconstruction of Israel would have been postponed for decades, or maybe not at all.

Naturally, neither the Hoover department nor other American officials knew anything about the agreement. We must bear in mind, in those years, the leaders of world Zionism, who were in the United States, did not feel too cozy there. They were monitored, U.S. leaders refused to accept Jewish refugees and took no action to prevent the extermination of Jews in Europe. Consequently, they had no sentiment towards America. And it is clear that their choice was in favor of creating the state of Israel. One of the initiators of the creation of the atomic bomb was Albert Einstein, whose position in relation to the creation of the state of Israel was also well known.

The leader of the Manhattan project was the Jew Robert Oppenheimer. Jewish scholars worked on the project: Otto Frisch, Edward Teller, Niels Bohr, Leo Silard, John von Neumann, Joseph Rotblatt, Isidore Rabi, Stanislav Ulam, Alexander Sacks, John Kemeny, James Frank.

Rosenberg, David Greenglass, Henry Gold, Morton Sobell and about fifteen others were convicted of nuclear espionage in favor of the USSR. They were mostly all Jews.

  • Don't you think the choice of Solomon Michaels for such a delicate mission is not entirely justified? After all, he was known not as a supporter of the reconstruction of the Jewish state in Palestine, but in the territory of modern Crimea, where the Jewish kingdom existed in the Middle Ages?

  • Most likely, before traveling to America, Mikhoels sincerely believed in the idea with Crimea. Mikhoels' speeches in America to raise money to create Jewish autonomy in Crimea began closer to the end of his trip. Apparently, the issue of Crimea was intended to conspiracy existing agreements.

In addition, I doubt that international Zionist leaders would discuss the problem of the resettlement of Jews in Crimea. They considered only one way - repatriation to Israel.

  • In your opinion, why did they kill Mikhoels then, because he successfully fulfilled his mission in America?

In early 1950, revelations of those involved in the transfer of classified data to Moscow began in America.

All persons involved in this story received various terms of imprisonment. Only the Rosenberg couple, although they were the only ones who did not have direct access to classified information, and the only ones against whom there was no unambiguous evidence, ended up in the electric chair.

Most likely, they were the only ones from the entire group who knew about the purpose of transferring atomic secrets.

The judge at the trial was the Jew Irving Kaufman, who had only taken the post two years before. Incidentally, the chairman of the World Jewish Congress, Stephen Vaiz, died on April 19, 1949, and Joint Vice President Joseph Himon on February 10, 1949.

It is difficult to say whether their deaths were natural, but the fact is that they died about a year and a half after the creation of the state of Israel - and if my version of the deal is correct, then for sure they both had something to do with it.

  • Communist Stalin never believed the Zionists and judging by the chain of historical events, he consistently acted as their ardent ideological opponent. If your version is correct, then it is striking how the Zionists believed Stalin's promises?

  • Of course, Stalin could well have received blueprints for the atomic bomb and not fulfilled his obligations towards Israel.

But do not forget who he was dealing with. Most likely, his opponents provided for such an outcome of events and insured themselves. It is quite possible that Stalin should have received the most key information after November forty-seventh.

Based on the assumption that the death penalty of the Rosenbergs was part of the sweep carried out by Stalin, it becomes clear why they were surrendered only in the fiftieth year.

According to one of the statements, when the schemes and drawings that Greenglass handed over to the Rosenbergs, and those to his curators (I wonder how they fell into the hands of the FBI from Soviet intelligence) were shown to American physicists, they called them a "caricature," explaining that they have no key things without which it is impossible to reveal the secret of atomic weapons.

It is possible that it was these key things that Stalin received after November 29, 1947. And most likely this happened between November 29, 1947 and January 12, 1948. On November 6, 1947, USSR Foreign Minister V.M. Molotov made a statement from which it followed - the USSR already has an atomic bomb. Molotov, of course, hastened for twenty-three days, but such a statement confirms the connection between the atomic bomb and the UN vote.

I want to return to the Soviet instructors who allegedly took part in the war for the Independence of Israel. The Great Patriotic War ended in forty-fifth year. Their relatives received funerals or people were reported missing. Consequently, even before the end of the war, training began for Israel, which confirms the existence of agreements on nuclear secrets.

Abandoned ship of illegal Jewish immigrants "Parita," Tel Aviv, 1940

1939: Non-lagal migration to Palestine of Jews from Europe bypassing British colonial administration ban

Eyewitness recollection:

In 1939, I completed my first secret assignment. I was told that at 5 pm you need to bike to a certain place in Tel Aviv. I didn't know who was going to be there and what I was going to be instructed to do. But when he arrived at the scene, Ben-Gurion and other Yishuv leaders were there. Two ships of Jewish immigrants from Europe were then sailing to Israel. It was August 21-22, 1939, almost before World War II. The vessels withdrew from Europe and arrived in Tel Aviv before the war had even begun. That is, European Jews sailed on it, who already understood what awaited them.

The British colonial administration banned the unrestricted repatriation of Jews to Palestine, and these ships sailed illegally. The task of the Jewish underground then was to close Tel Aviv from the British so that they could not enter Tel Aviv while ships with immigrants were in it at the raid. It was "Wingate Night," that is, named after Horde Charles Wingate. At 19:00, one ship arrived in Tel Aviv, and the Jewish underground blocked the British so effectively that they could not enter the city at all.

I was among those boys who were assigned a very responsible assignment. It's a moving story. The ships could not approach the port. They came as close to the shore as possible, and our task was to enter the water and transfer people to the shore on themselves or transfer them by boat. I would get to the ship, take the man on his back and swim with him to shore. Then I went back and took another. I entered the sea, sailed to the ship, took a man, and who was that? It turned out to be my father's little brother! My uncle!
