2019: Hackers demand $14 million for an unblocking of systems 110 of nursing homes in the USA

At the end of November, 2019 hackers demanded $14 million in cryptocurrency for an unblocking of systems 110 of nursing homes in the USA.

The Virtual Care Provider Inc. (VCPI) IT company confirmed that hackers used the Ryuk program racketeer and ciphered all data of clients. The company supports about 80,000 computers and servers servicing medical institutions in 45 states of the USA.

Ryuk is especially dangerous strain of the malware which occupies the government organizations and other valuable objects. He ciphers files and demands the redemption for an unblocking. The CEO of VCPI Karen Christianson noted that the attack affected "practically all" the main offers of the company, including Internet access, drawing of accounts, phones, e-mail and access to records of clients.

Some organizations of the nurse cannot order medicine. One more institution cannot provide the account to insurance company, and without payment of accounts it will just be closed. Many elderly people are ready to refuse our services and just wait when we return them personal data, but we cannot make also it, - Kristianson explained. Hold Security research company showed that originally cyber attack to VCPI could happen in September, 2018. The founder of Hold Security also explained that the attack which eventually VCPI faced was actually preventable. The CEO of VCPI promised to document everything that occurred to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Many companies are ready to pay the redemption to racketeers to recover access to critical files. However, as it is reported, VCPI is not able to afford to pay the redemption therefore the situation is only aggravated.[1]
