Population

2023: The population of Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict with Russia has decreased from 37.6 million to 29 million people

By May 2023, the permanent population of Ukraine was 29 million people against 37.6 million at the beginning of 2022. Such data in June 2023 was published by the analytical center "Ukrainian Institute of the Future" (UIB).

The population of Ukraine since the beginning of the SVO has decreased to 29 million people

By May 2023, 9.1 million - 9.5 million residents worked in Ukraine, and if you subtract from this number of state employees, there are about 6-7 million people employed in the extra-budgetary sector.

They are a team that carries others - 22-23 million people, including pensioners, children, students, unemployed, dependents, the same public sector workers, - say UIB analysts, whose data are provided by TASS on June 6, 2023.

According to the researchers' forecasts, if nothing changes, then in a few years there will be twice as many pensioners in Ukraine as working citizens. The UIB explains that the announced estimate of the country's population is based on data from the Ukrainian Institute of Demography and Social Sciences named after Mikhail Ptukha, data from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, as well as on the organization's own estimates.

File:Aquote1.png
I believe that the figure of 29 million inhabitants announced by the UIB is still a very large advance to the current Ukraine. I am sure that in reality its population today is much smaller. We remember that at the time of the collapse of the USSR, the population of the republic was estimated at 52 million people. But since then, over the years of independence, the number of people living in Ukraine has been steadily falling. In addition, several densely populated regions fell away from Ukraine. But the strongest influence on the decline in the number of Ukrainians was mass migration - these are people who are looking for a better life in other countries, as well as those who do not want to participate in hostilities against Russian troops, military analyst Yuriy Kotenok told the Federal News Agency.[1]

Marriages and divorces

2025: In Ukraine, the number of new marriages for the year increased by 10.2%, the number of divorces decreased by 23.4 %

In 2025, 165.59 thousand new marriages were concluded in Ukraine. This figure by 10.2%, or 15.38 thousand new marriages, exceeded the result of 2024. At the same time, the number of divorces decreased by 23.4%, or 8.01 thousand, amounting to 26.28 thousand. This is evidenced by the data of the report of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine on state registration of acts of civil status, published on January 28, 2026.

The dynamics of marriages and divorces in Ukraine in 2025 became the opposite to the trends of the previous period. In 2024, 150.21 thousand marriages were registered in the country, which is 19.3%, or 38.84 thousand, less than in 2023. And the number of divorces in 2024 increased by 42.2%, or 10.18 thousand - to 34.29 thousand.

In Ukraine, the number of new marriages per year increased by 10.2%

In the second half of 2025, marriage activity was significantly higher than in the first: the number of registered marriages increased by 41.4%, reaching 96.99 thousand. The number of divorces in the same period increased by 7.1% - to 13.59 thousand.

On national average, there were 6.3 marriages per registered divorce in 2025. The highest ratio was noted in Kyiv (10 marriages per divorce), Lviv (8.7) and Transcarpathian (8.6) regions, as well as in Rivne region (8.3). The lowest indicators were demonstrated by Zaporizhzhya, Cherkasy, Kharkov, Poltava, Vinnytsia and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, where the ratio was from 4.3 to 4.8 marriages per divorce.

By comparison, in 2024, there were 4.4 marriages for one divorce. The best ratio was recorded in Rivne (8.1 marriages for divorce) and Transcarpathian (7.2 marriages for divorce) regions. The lowest indicators were noted in Ternopil, Kharkov, Cherkasy, Vinnitsa and Khmelnitsky regions, where there were 3.3 to 3.6 marriages per divorce.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Justice, in 2021, 214.01 thousand marriages and 29.59 thousand divorces were registered in Ukraine. In 2022, in the first year of Russia's special military operation (SVO) in Ukraine, the number of marriages increased to 222.89 thousand, and the number of divorces decreased to 17.89 thousand.[2]

Children

2025: The number of school-age children in Ukraine has decreased to 3.74 million. This is at least 30 years

As of the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, the number of school-age children in Ukraine was about 3.74 million, which is the lowest figure in 30 years. Moreover, every tenth student, although listed in the Ukrainian education system, is actually outside the country. This is stated in the materials with which TAdviser got acquainted in mid-November 2025.

According to the NGL Media resource, citing data from the State Statistics Service and the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, 9.3% of Ukrainian schoolchildren study abroad, or about 345 thousand children. Many high school students, especially young men, leave the country due to the prevailing geopolitical situation. The proportion of girls in the upper classes of Ukrainian schools increases slightly annually, but the difference between the sexes remains insignificant (1-2%).

File:Aquote1.png
The main reason for traveling abroad among high school students remains the issue of safety - this includes both the excitement of parents about a possible decrease in the mobilization age to 18 years, and the general anxiety for the lives of children in the country, - said in the publication of NGL Media.

According to UN estimates, about 1.4 million Ukrainian refugees worldwide are children and adolescents aged 3 to 17 years. A UNESCO study suggests that almost 665 thousand Ukrainian schoolchildren studied in the EU countries alone in 2024. More than a quarter (29%) of Ukrainian school-age refugees study in Europe in two programs - local and Ukrainian, spending an additional three hours a day on this.

In 10 European countries, an average of 78% of Ukrainian pupils were enrolled in formal educational institutions, according to data compiled by UNESCO and the UN Office for Refugees. However, inequality persists - especially for children with disabilities and those facing language barriers.[3]
