2020: Demonstration of wireless control of robots using a 5G
The companies ABB and Ericsson jointly with Swiss the operator communications Swisscom for the first time showed how using technologies of networks of mobile communication of the 5th generation (5G) it is possible to manage easily and effectively robots at a great distance in real time. On January 27, 2020 AVV company reported about it.
Potential of 5G networks providing transfer data without delay, the companies could estimate personally. In the Congress center of Davos (Switzerland) collaborative robot YuMi, created by ABB, wrote the message in "sandbox" which was at the same time reproduced by the second robot YuMi at distance of 1.5 km from this place.
The synchronism of these actions was reached thanks to 5G network of Swisscom company based on a telecommunication technology of Ericsson. It was possible to watch robots in real time on the video screens installed on both platforms. The fundamental technologies necessary for connection of industrial equipment to a 5G networks were created as a result of long-term sci-tech cooperation of ABB and Ericsson.
ABB will continue to develop digital transformation of the industry, investing in development of the innovative solutions and products. Thanks to partnership with Ericsson and Swisscom we will manage to realize completely the potential of communication networks of the 5th generation in industrial production, told Peter Voser, the chief executive and the chairman of the board of directors of ABB

The event was also commented by Sami Atiya, the president of "Robotics and Discrete Automation" business division of ABB:
Technologies of wireless communication of the 5th generation simplify connection of robots to cloud platforms and automated control systems for production. As a result it is possible to transfer quicker large volumes of data, to receive valuable analytics and to optimize decision making process on its basis. Such improvements promote increase in efficiency and reliability of all fabrication cycle. Replacement of traditional wire infrastructure with a mobile 5G networks will give the chance to considerably improve flexibility of production, |
Sharing of technologies 5G by the enterprises, governments and society has paramount value for development of digital economy. Creation and support of partnership in the field of technologies 5G will become a key to implementation of the digital opportunities contributing to the development of economy both on global and at the national level and also the companies of any size, said Börje Ekholm, the president and the chief executive of Ericsson

This technology will provide to the companies flexibility in control of the equipment at manufacturing enterprise. Thanks to 5G networks deployment and harmonious work of big parks of independent machines and robots will become possible.
One of the main advantages of industrial infrastructure on the basis of a 5G is that she allows to refuse the concept "one control device — one function". Instead control of a set of machines can be exercised from the uniform center. Costs for administration and maintenance of operating and information systems on a global scale will as a result be reduced.
The ABB company continuously works on development of autonomous systems in different segments of the market. For example, at the end of 2018 ABB implemented remote control of ferry navigation through the harbor of Helsinki. Modern technologies 5G will accelerate digitalization of industries thanks to what producers around the world will be able to increase the efficiency and quality of products.
