Cars without drivers began to deliver food from KFC

Customers: KFC

Tourism, Hospitality and Restaurant Business

Contractors: Neolix Technologies

Project date: 2021/01

At the beginning of January, 2021 in China KFC began to deliver orders using unmanned vehicles. Trucks provide contactless delivery, transferring to clients of a dish from roast chicken directly on the street. "The restaurant on wheels" uses the pilotless vehicles of the Chinese company Neolix similar to cars capsules.

Earlier Forbes reported that Neolix began to work with Yum Brands which possesses KFC, over pilotless vehicles for giving of food, and especially mentioned partnership with KFC and Pizza Hut. Apparently, the first tests were passed by the KFC trucks. Nevertheless, the innovation model of sales of KFC appeared without any declaration therefore it is still unknown whether pilotless delivery was started within the marketing campaign or for the purpose of promotion of new technologies of sales.

The buyer can make the order using the interactive screen which is built in the UAV and pay it using the QR code. After receiving payment the door in the car opens, allowing the buyer to take away the order. It is from outside not clear what prevents the client to take not only the ordered goods, but probably the special security system is developed for prevention of thefts.

It is known that unmanned vehicles of Neolix company can independently detect and go round obstacles. The course stock without additional recharge at cars of delivery makes 100 km, and the maximum speed of 50 km/h. Pilotless electric cars already gain popularity among consumers in China that is expected, considering pandemic shift in consumer behavior towards e-commerce and contactless transactions. It is quite probable that unmanned vehicles of delivery of KFC will appear also in other countries soon.[1]
