Dmitry Zimin was born on April 28, 1933 in Moscow.

Education

In 1957, Zimin graduated from the Faculty of Radio Electronics of Aircraft of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI). After graduation, he worked for five years in a laboratory at the Moscow Aviation Institute, in 1962 he moved to work at the Radio Engineering Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Radio Engineering Institute named after Academician A.L. Mints, Moscow).

In the spring of 1963 he defended his thesis, and in 1984 - his doctoral dissertation.

Biography

1992-2001

In 1992, together with the American investor Ogi K. Fabela II, Zimin founded the Vympel Communications AOT company (later called VimpelCom). In 1993, she received a license to provide mobile communications in the center of Moscow and began working under the Beeline brand. In the company, Zimin took over as president and CEO.

In 1996, VimpelCom became the first company from Russia to enter the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2001, Zimin sold almost his entire stake, resigned from its management, remaining the honorary president of the company.

2005

Dmitry Zimin was on the Forbes list - the last time he was included in the list in 2005. Zimin's fortune was estimated at $520 million.

2021: Death in Switzerland

December 22, 2021 it became known about the death of Dmitry Zimin. The founder of VimpelCom and the Dynasty charitable foundation died in Switzerland at the age of 88.

Dmitry Zimin was married to Maya Zimina (Shakhmatova). He is survived by his son Boris and six grandchildren.[1]
