Connection of communication and mobile Internet at Potapovo station
MegaFon has connected communication and mobile Internet at the new station of the Sokolnicheskaya line of the Moscow metro - Potapovo. From the first day of its operation, passengers can freely use voice communication and mobile Internet at speeds up to 300 Mbit⁄s. MegaFon announced this on September 5, 2024.
Communication throughout the Moscow Metro is based on base stations, to which antennas installed in the lobby and a high-frequency emitting cable laid along the entire length of the tunnels are connected. It does not outwardly differ from electrical wires, but it emits a radio signal through transverse slots at the level of train windows, catching users' devices directly and allowing them to use high-quality communication continuously throughout the trip.
Telecom equipment at another metro station supports low-speed 2G and 3G bands, as well as high-speed 4G bands, providing stable signal and network capacity. At the same time, high speed was achieved in vestibules using Multiple Input - Multiple Output (MIMO) 2x2 technology and frequency aggregation. Thanks to this, metro passengers can make calls and use fast mobile Internet anywhere in the subway.
The opening of Potapovo will significantly improve the transport conditions of more than 200 thousand residents of the Kommunarka district and its neighboring districts. We take into account the importance of developing the underground infrastructure of the city, so we launch the network simultaneously with the commissioning of this station so that passengers can immediately feel the convenience of technologies and comfort not only in metro engineering solutions, but in mobile communications, "added Mikhail Prakhov, MegaFon's development director in the Moscow region. |
Completion of the construction of telecom infrastructure on the Big Ring Line
Engineers MegaFon completed a large-scale - construction telecom infrastructure on the Big Ring Line. metropolitan metro Now subway passengers can freely use voice communication mobile internet at speeds up to 180 Mbps in the tunnel and up to 450 Mbps in the lobbies. MegaFon announced this on April 4, 2024.
Work on the project began long before the official opening of the BCL, so technical specialists built the network infrastructure from scratch. It was possible to achieve such a spectrum of speed characteristics due to a high-frequency emitting cable laid along the entire length of the tunnel. Outwardly, it does not differ in any way from the usual electrical wires on the walls of the subway, but it has transverse slots through which a radio signal is emitted at the level of the train windows, which is directly caught by passenger devices.
The high data rate for a plurality of simultaneously connected subscribers is provided by the LTE-1800 and LTE-2100 bands. At the same time, the LTE-800 and LTE-900 ranges allow the signal to more reliably penetrate inside the car and allow subscribers to make calls and use the mobile Internet without pauses.
At the same time, in the lobbies, high speed is achieved, among other things, due to equipment that supports the LTE-2600 range, and Multiple Input - Multiple Output (MIMO) 2x2 technology, which receives signals from many subscribers via parallel communication channels, which significantly increases the network capacity.
BCL has become a key and high-tech metro construction project in Russia and the world. More than a million Muscovites and guests of the capital use trains on the line every day, and it is extremely important for each of them to stay in touch even underground. We have implemented the most current technological solutions for our subscribers and guaranteed them stable voice communication and high-speed Internet without any interruptions anywhere in the city, "said Andrey Abramov, director of MegaFon infrastructure projects in the Moscow region. |
The large ring line has become the main transport event in the life of Moscow over the past 70 years. BCL connected 34 districts of Moscow, the length of the ring was 70 km with 31 stations and three electric depots. The project improved transport services for 15 million residents of Moscow and the region, allowing them to save up to 35-45 minutes on the road every day.
2023: Increased network capacity in tunnels and 230 stations
MegaFon upgraded the telecom infrastructure in the Moscow Metro, increasing the network capacity in tunnels and at 230 stations. By the end of 2023, work on improving cellular communications will be completed at other metro stations in the capital. MegaFon announced this on October 16, 2023.
Now, passengers of the metropolitan subway even at peak hours have access to the Internet at an average speed of about 32 Mbps, and the maximum possible speed reaches 280 Mbps. The modernization covered 11 metro lines. MegaFon specialists switched the equipment to a high-frequency cable, installed base stations and conducted refarming, as a result of which the frequencies of 2G and 3G networks were transferred to the LTE standard.
Voice communication and high-speed Internet also appeared at stations opened in September 2023: Yakhromskaya, Lianozovo, Fiztech, Pykhtino and Vnukovo Airport. By the end of 2023, work on the modernization of the network will be completed on the Sokolnicheskaya, Solntsevskaya and Lublin-Dmitrovskaya lines.
Passenger traffic in the Moscow metro is steadily growing, which means that the load on the telecom infrastructure is also increasing. The modernization allowed us to increase the network capacity in the subway by 2.5 times. This guarantees subscribers a stable voice connection, comfortable surfing the Internet and watching high-resolution videos without interruptions, "said Mikhail Prakhov, MegaFon's director of development in the Moscow region. |
In 2024, MegaFon plans to provide cellular communication to the radial metro line under construction - Troitskaya. Mobile Internet will appear both in tunnels and on the platforms of 11 stations of this branch, the total length of which will be 25 kilometers.
2022: Increasing the speed of mobile internet in the subway
MegaFon on September 16, 2022 announced that it had updated the network in the Moscow Metro, which made it possible to increase the speed of mobile Internet by 42%. The new equipment is installed on the busiest metro lines, where passenger traffic is growing more actively and the use of the most modern technologies is necessary.
First of all, the modernization affected Koltsevaya, Zamoskvoretskaya, Sokolnicheskaya, Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya, Serpukhov-Timiryazevskaya and Kaluga-Riga lines - these are over 130 stations, which account for more than 45% of passenger traffic. Point settings of the equipment made it possible to expand the capacity of LTE technology and provide subscribers with continuous access to all mobile services at high speed.
"MegaFon was the first to provide subscribers with access to 4G technology in the Moscow subway in 2016. The consumption of mobile traffic is steadily growing - people are increasingly using gadgets on the road. We are constantly monitoring changes and modernizing the network taking into account the construction of new stations and load redistribution so that our subscribers remain in touch and can use the high-speed Internet even in the metro, "said Alexey Titov, technical director of MegaFon. |
As of September 16, 2022, more than 90% of metro subscribers use mobile Internet, while traffic has increased by 11% over the past year alone. On the road, passengers read the news, communicate online, watch films and TV shows. Messengers, social networks and video services in the metro account for more than 50% of total mobile traffic. The most popular services in the subway were Telegram and VK, they occupy 13% and 7% of total mobile Internet traffic, respectively.
On average, the passenger spends 30 minutes on the subway. At the same time, men use the metro more often than women: the ratio is 59% to 41%. The largest group of passengers are people aged 30 to 40, 39% of the total passenger traffic. This is followed by the age categories 20-30 years (34%) and 40-50 years (17%).
The top devices from which passengers access the Internet are led by smartphones, accounting for 82% of total mobile Internet traffic. The most popular model remains the Apple iPhone 11. The top three are also Samsung Galaxy A12 and Xiaomi Redmi 9A. Last year's leaders - Honor 10 LTE and iPhone 7 shifted to 6th and 7th place.
