2023: Shadayev: Mobile traffic in Russia increased by 20% over the year

Mobile traffic in Russia in 2022 increased by 20%. This was announced at the end of April 2023 by the Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation Maksut Shadayev.

File:Aquote1.png
Traffic is still growing. Maybe not at the same pace as it grew in the covid year... mobile traffic rose 20% last year, he said at one of the conferences.

Maksut Shadayev

According to Shadayev, expanding the infrastructure is required to increase the speed of mobile Internet - it is impossible to stand still in this area.

File:Aquote1.png
To be honest, in terms of average mobile Internet speed, we no longer look super attractive in all international ratings. The poet needs to expand the infrastructure, - said the head of the Ministry of Digital Science.
File:Aquote2.png

At the same time, Shadayev noted that in the Russian Federation there is a difficulty using communication frequencies.

File:Aquote1.png
Now we are preparing a big strategy for the development of telecom. There, great attention is paid to frequencies. Without the release of frequencies, we will not go further, "the minister added on April 26, 2023.
File:Aquote2.png

The head of Beeline Alexander Torbakhov also drew attention to the problem, indicating that there are enough communication frequencies in the regions of the spectrum, and in Moscow the spectrum is approaching the limits of its capabilities.

File:Aquote1.png
If you look at the other largest metropolises of the world, then nowhere is there so little spectral resource allocated to all operators together as in Moscow, nowhere will you see such a small resource allocated for civilian needs. It's a problem. If traffic grows, and, most likely, it will grow, quality will degrade, he said.
File:Aquote2.png

According to Torbakhov, the speeds that are available by April 2023, in a few years "will seem like a wonderful past," because traffic will grow and it will not be possible to cope with it due to a lack of spectrum. [1]

2022

Mobile traffic in Runet in nine months increased to 90%

The share of mobile traffic in Runet reached 90% in 9 months of 2022. Such data are provided by technical specialists of the SlickJump advertising network, whose audience exceeds 60 million users per month. The company announced this on November 9, 2022. According to the previous measurement, which was carried out in March 2022, the share of mobile traffic was estimated at 87%. Thus, in the second and third quarters of 2022, the increase in the number of mobile devices in the total number of network requests amounted to 3%.

Experts note that, most likely, it is the limit value for the Runet for the next few years.

File:Aquote1.png
This is a very high figure, which can hardly be considered constant. The current value is determined by various factors, including the limitation of the work of certain services and resources and sites in Russia. Mobile devices allow you to use tools to bypass VPN restrictions, and are also the most convenient tools for fast content consumption, "said Anton Ermakov, executive director of SlickJump.
File:Aquote2.png

Earlier it was expected that mobile traffic by the end of 2022 will return to the forecast indicators at the level of 2021 - 83%. But in November 2022, forecasts have to be adjusted taking into account the trend for a significant decrease in the share of stationary computers in the total number of requests for Runet resources.

Mobile traffic in Russia has been growing for several years, but the indicators of 2022 can be called record and to some extent anomalous. Among the reasons for this growth, analysts note not only the active use of VPN, but also dramatic changes in content consumption.

File:Aquote1.png
We see a trend towards rapid consumption of content, including using instant messengers and special applications of social networks. This format dictates the choice of mobile devices for accessing information on the Runet, - said Anton Ermakov.
File:Aquote2.png

SlickJump analysts believe that by the end of 2022, mobile traffic consumption in Russia will stabilize and decline. Experts call the figure of 87-88% as an approximate indicator at the end of 2022, which reflects the dynamics of 2021.

In Russia, for the first time in history, the consumption of mobile Internet fell

In the second quarter of 2022, the volume of mobile traffic in Russia decreased by 2.5% compared to the previous three months. The decline occurred for the first time in the history of the market, Izvestia notes, citing data from the Ministry of Digital Science.

According to statistics from the department, in January-March 2022, mobile traffic in the Russian Federation amounted to 8.54 billion GB, and in the second quarter it decreased to 8.35 billion GB. For comparison: in October - December 2021, traffic, according to the Ministry of Digital Industry, amounted to 8.25 billion GB, and in the next three months it increased by about 90 million GB. The reduction in traffic volumes was confirmed to the newspaper by the press services of MegaFon, MTS and Tele2.

In the Russian Federation, for the first time in history, the consumption of mobile Internet fell

The decline is due to the fact that in March 2022 some foreign social networks were blocked, and foreign producers left the online cinema and music market. In addition, the Russians returned to normal work after the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The representative MTS agrees with this assumption. He notes that traffic growth Telegram in 2022 was higher than last year's indicators, while other Russian Inforesources were growing at the same pace. However, this "increase did not make up for the decrease in traffic Facebook and (Instagram owned by, Meta recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation), as well as." TikTok

TelecomDaily predicts that by the end of 2022, prices for mobile and broadband services will rise by 15-18%. Representatives of operators say that the price increase that has already occurred ranged from 2% to 15%, but argue that the growth in any case does not exceed inflation. After the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, basic foreign roaming services for Russian telecom operators rose in price by 5-40%.

The Ministry of Digital Industry considers the decrease in cross-border traffic and mobile Internet traffic insignificant, since its aggregate indicators for the first and second quarters of 2022 exceed the same indicators of 2021.[2]

Ministry of Digital: Instagram, Facebook and Twitter lost 80% of Russian traffic after blocking

On June 16, 2022, the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation reported a sharp drop in Instagram, Facebook traffic (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) and Twitter after blocking these services.

File:Aquote1.png
About three of these social networks accounted for 10-12% of mobile traffic. The numbers we have show that only a fifth of that traffic has gone to the VPN. Consumption ended by 80%, - said the head of the Ministry of Digital Science Maksut Shadayev.

Ministry of Digital: Instagram, Facebook and Twitter lost 80% of Russian traffic after blocking

According to him, YouTube retains the first place in traffic by mid-June 2022: it accounts for 18% of the traffic of the Big Four operators MTS, VimpelCom, MegaFon, Tele2). TikTok's share fell from 12% in January-February 2022 to below 10%.

Shadayev noted that Telegram's mobile traffic more than doubled to 6%. At the same time, the share of WhatsApp does not increase and is the same 2%. The share of VKontakte traffic increased by more than a third and exceeded 10%.

According to the Mediascope study, which was published in mid-June 2022, before the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the average daily coverage of Instagram in the Russian Federation was almost 39 million people, by mid-April it fell to 14.5 million, and by the end of May - up to 11.7 million.

Facebook's coverage collapsed from 6.7 million users per day, first to 2.9 million people, and then to 2.2 million. At the same time, the researchers explained that everything is even worse. The numbers above include sessions of less than five minutes. This means that some users go into the application, see that nothing happens in it due to locks - and immediately go out, explained in Mediascope. If you exclude such sessions, the average daily coverage of Instagram in the mobile version is now only 5.5 million users, Facebook - 370 thousand.[3]

2021

The share of mobile traffic in Runet reached a record 83%

By the end of 2021, about 83% of Internet traffic in Russia came from mobile devices, which is 2 percentage points more than a year earlier. The recorded result turned out to be a record, according to data from SlickJump analysts (released in January 2022), who track the dynamics of traffic changes on the Runet.

Experts attribute the high use of mobile devices to a change in the format of content consumption on the Internet. Despite epidemiological limitations, users are increasingly using mobile devices for work and rest.

The share of mobile traffic in Runet reached a record 83% in 2021

However, in some periods of 2021, there was a decrease in the share of mobile traffic. So, in January, the indicator was 77%, in May - 75%. But the figures for November and December were significantly higher than expected and made it possible to update the record.

Analysts explain that the ratio of mobile and stationary traffic may change, at the beginning of the year, users more often resort to stationary PCs, the share of mobile traffic is decreasing. But at the end of the year, the share of mobile traffic is growing, and according to observations of the last three years, they are showing an increasing percentage.

File:Aquote1.png
The increase in the share of mobile traffic is largely ahead of experts' forecasts, says Anton Ermakov, executive director of SlickJump. - Before the start of the [coronavirus COVID-19 - approx. TAdviser] pandemic, mobile traffic grew rather slowly, but now [by January 2022], despite the lack of sufficient freedom of movement and active tourism, mobile traffic is updating annual records. Most likely, we are seeing a trend of a massive transition of users to mobile devices, stationary PCs remain a means of consuming content for fewer and fewer people.[4]increased by 2%
File:Aquote2.png

Mobile devices account for about 81% of Internet traffic

The share of mobile traffic in Runet continues to grow. The latest data from SlickJump analysts indicate that mobile devices account for about 81% of the total. Thus, stationary computers and laptops account for 19% of Internet traffic, which is the lowest figure since 2018. SlickJump announced this on August 10, 2021.

Experts note that the pandemic has affected the overall picture of traffic separation. Starting from September 2020, the share of mobile traffic began to decline unexpectedly, contrary to analysts' forecasts about its further growth. True, the forecast did not take into account the trend of switching to a remote work format and, as a result, an increase in the number of stationary workplaces. For example, if in an office, employees could divide workstations among themselves, then to work from home it was necessary to place separate stationary PCs or laptops.

Because of this, in January and May 2021, mobile traffic decreased to 77 and 75%, respectively, while the increase in the share of stationary traffic in May 2021 can be considered the largest since the beginning of 2020.

Image:Мобильный трафик 2021.png

However, as of August 1, 2021, the share of mobile traffic increased again and reached 81%. Analysts predict that further increases in mobile traffic will slow down, but will not stop.

{{quote 'There is no doubt that mobile devices will dominate the Runet and beyond. The pandemic has given desktop solutions a small head start, but this does not change the consumer vector. Runet users will increasingly use mobile devices for communications and obtaining information from the Web.

Moreover, as working applications move to a mobile format, the need for stationary PCs and laptops to work will decrease, and the share of mobile traffic will grow, as it happened before, "said Anton Ermakov, executive director of SlickJump.}}

2020

Mobile traffic growth for the year by 47%

Analysts at the Institute for Statistical Research and Economics of Knowledge (ISIEZ) of the Higher School of Economics analyzed the indicators of the demand for telecommunications infrastructure in Russia against the background of a sharp increase in Internet traffic and loads on communication networks in 2020 and in the first quarter of 2021. This became known on July 22, 2021. According to researchers, fixed Internet traffic in 2020 increased by 35% on an annualized basis, setting an absolute record over the past five years (62 Ebait). At the very beginning of the pandemic (Q2 2020), it grew by 34.2% compared to the same period in 2019. The volume of data transmitted via wired communication channels for the first quarter of 2021 amounted to 18 Ebytes (42.6% higher than in the same period 2020). Mobile traffic in 2020 increased by 47% compared to 2019 (22.6 Ebait). During the strictest lockdown (Q2 2020), it increased by 51.9% compared to the same period in 2019. In the first three months of 2021, the growth of mobile traffic amounted to 34.5% compared to January-March 2020.

HSE analysts also noted that in recent years there has been a saturation of the telecom market. The number of subscribers to fixed broadband access (broadband access) to the Internet in Russia amounted to 23 units per 100 people of the population in 2020 (+ 3.7% compared to 2019). In the leading in this indicator, Switzerland (47.6 units), France (44.6), Denmark (44.2) growth rates of fixed- broadband access subscribers in 2020 were within 1.7%.

The number of mobile broadband access subscribers per 100 people in Russia at the end of 2020 amounted to 99.6 units (+ 3.3% compared to 2019). Despite the steady growth of the indicator, in 2020 the dynamics turned out to be the lowest in the last decade. Among the reasons are the closure of retail communication salons during quarantine, the refusal of subscribers to use additional SIM-cards and almost zero connection of foreign citizens due to closed borders.

According to analysts, in 2020 the share of high-speed Internet subscribers (more than 100 Mbps) increased by 8.3 percentage points. compared to 2019 and for the first time exceeded the share of users connecting to the Network at a speed of 10-100 Mbps (42.2% versus 39.8%). FTTH/FTTB (FTTx) fiber-optic communication networks are being actively deployed in Russia, providing the most reliable Internet connection - by the end of 2020, the share of such a connection technology amounted to 82.5% of subscribers (13.7 pp more than in 2015). However, 10.8% of the total number of subscribers are still connected using xDSL technology, in 2015 their share was 23.6%.

Tariffs for fixed Internet in the first year of the pandemic remained at the level of 2019 (552.88 rubles per month as of December 2020). The cost of a package of mobile services in December 2020 increased by 12.5% compared to December 2019 (388.86 rubles per month), a year earlier the growth was more than double (+ 27.9%). In the first quarter of 2021, mobile services fell by an average of 0.5%, the cost of fixed Internet increased by 1.7% compared to December 2020.

HSE analysts told the correspondent that at the beginning of 2021, the tendency to increase the demand for the Internet was confirmed.

{{quote 'This is manifested in a sharp increase in the growth rate of fixed Internet traffic (+ 42.6% compared to the first quarter of 2020). At the same time, the growth rate of mobile traffic slowed down somewhat (+ 34.5% compared to the first quarter of 2020), although it remains at a high level. At the beginning of 2021, the number of wired Internet subscribers increased by 3.3% (compared with January-March 2020), mobile - by 4.1%.

In the first three months of 2021, Internet tariffs remained at the level of 2020: mobile Internet services fell by 0.5% compared to December 2020 (386.9 rubles per month), fixed - increased by 1.7% (562.31 rubles per month), - analysts at the Higher School of Economics said [5].}}

Mobile traffic in Runet reached 80%

Mobile traffic in Runet reached 80%, thereby actually replacing classic stationary computers and laptops. This was announced on September 28, 2020 by SlickJump. At the same time, a serious increase in traffic from mobile devices has been recorded since the beginning of 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic began in the world.

Experts expected that the pandemic would have the opposite effect on the distribution of traffic between mobile and desktop systems. It was logical to assume that during mass self-isolation, the popularity of stationary systems will noticeably increase, because due to the pandemic, user mobility is reduced. However, analysts SlickJump noted a noticeable increase in mobile traffic in January 2020. In the spring, there was a slight decline, after which mobile traffic increased to an indicator that had not yet been recorded in Runet.

According to technical experts, the current figure of 80% is far from the maximum. If the growth rate of mobile traffic continues, then in 2021 its share may reach 88-92%.

Row 1 - Computers
Row 2 - Mobile Traffic

Mobile traffic caught up with that generated by computer and laptop owners back in 2016. Then the ratio was 51.3% of the total traffic from tablets and smartphones and 48.7% from desktops. Since then, mobile traffic has been constantly growing, although the graph shows periods of its decrease in different years.

SlickJump notes an increase in the share of mobile traffic on all sites that are part of the partner network - this is more than 500 large Runet resources.

File:Aquote1.png
The share of mobile traffic is growing steadily and this should be taken into account not only by sites, but also by players in the advertizing market. We need to adapt activities to mobile consumption, content create tools to promote services and products on tablets and, - mobile phones said the executive director of SlickJump. Anton Ermakov
File:Aquote2.png

SlickJump analysts note that as mobile traffic grows, not only the content and sites on the network will change, but the consumption scheme. information MEDIA messengers Aggregators of short news and materials will also take the place of traditional ones.
