2022: Optical Cable Development

The capital's research and production enterprise Spetskabel has developed an optical cable that is resistant to two types of hydrostatic water pressure at once - radial and longitudinal, without using metal structural elements. This was announced on October 28, 2022 by the head of the Department of Investment and Industrial Policy of Moscow, which is part of the Complex of Economic Policy and Property and Land Relations of the capital, Vladislav Ovchinsky.

Thanks to the modernization of the lines and the improvement of scientific activities, the Spetskabel plant has developed a way to provide longitudinal and radial tightness to optical cables, while maintaining the lightness, flexibility and strength of the product without using metal structural elements. As of October 2022, experimental samples were made as part of the development work, the necessary tests began. After their completion, new cables will be able to use in domestic naval vessels. The technology of reinforcement with special connectors will be able to ensure the high quality of transmitted signals, their volume and speed, - said Vladislav Ovchinsky.

Radial hydrostatic pressure acts perpendicular to the cable sheath, longitudinal pressure - perpendicular to the cable cross-section plane. Previously, the design allowed to ensure resistance to two types of pressure at once, in which the optical fiber was placed in a metal tube filled with sealant. However, such a solution increases the weight of the cable, reduces flexibility and has a complex technology for mounting connectors.

Our developers have provided two sealing options - "wet" and "dry." Each has its own advantages. If the first type is appropriate where the cable can be in water for a long time, then the second option is convenient, for example, for laying between the compartments of the vessel, - said Andrey Gusev, head of the design and technological department of fiber-optic cables and cable assemblies of the Spetskabel enterprise.
