2023: Turkey makes record profit from tourism - more than $46 billion

The tourism industry in 2023 brought Turkey a record amount of income - more than $46 billion. This is 53.4% higher than the result of a year ago. Such data from the Institute of Statistics of Turkey (TUIK) were published at the end of January 2024.

According to Interfax, citing TUIK materials, personal expenses of tourists in Turkey in 2023 reached $34.47 billion, and another $11.8 billion fell on sales of travel packages.

According to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, by the end of 2023, 49,209,180 visits of foreigners were recorded in the country. This is 10.4% more than a year earlier (44,564,395). The leaders in terms of tourist flow to Turkey in 2023 were:

1. Russia - 6,313,675 visits in 2023: + 20.7% by 2022 (5,232,611);
2. Germany - 6,193,259 visits in 2023: + 9.05% by 2022 (5,679,194);
3. Britain - 3,800,922 visits in 2023: + 12.8% by 2022 (3,370,739).

On the fourth and fifth lines are Bulgaria (2,893,092 visits, + 0.4% by 2022, mainly trips with non-tourist purposes) and Iran (2,504,494 visits, + 7.4% by 2022). These TOP-5 countries in 2023 accounted for almost half (44.1%) of the total foreign tourist flow to Turkey. For Russia separately - 12.8%.

According to experts, the tourist flow to Turkey in 2023 has returned to normal. The main increase (compared to 2022) in the number of visitors from Russia to Turkey fell on the first half of the year. As noted by the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, we are talking about recovery after the recession: in 2022, during this period, there were problems with air traffic and a shortage of aircraft, i.e. a low base of comparison.

In 2028, Turkey predicts an increase in tourist flow to 90 million people, and tourism revenues to $100 billion.^[1]

According to statistics, in the fourth quarter of 2022, tourism revenues increased by 22.2% compared to the same quarter last year and amounted to $11.37 billion. More than 15% of revenues came from foreign travelers. Personal expenses of tourists in the fourth quarter of 2022 amounted to $8.27 billion, and expenses under tourist packages - almost $4 billion.

In 2022, more than 44 million foreign tourists visited Turkey, of which 5.2 million were Russians, follows from the statistics of the country's Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

According to the results of 2022, Russia took second place among countries in terms of tourist flow to Turkey. The share of Russian citizens in the foreign tourist flow is 11.7%.

With a small margin ahead was where Germany 5.67 million tourists came from (share 12.7%). Great Britain took third place (3.37 million and a share of 7.5%). The top 5 also included (Bulgaria 2.8 million) and (Iran 2.3 million).

As Mehmet Nuri Ersoy noted, Turkey has every chance to set a new record in 2023, earning $56 billion in tourism. In addition, Ersoy expressed confidence that by 2028 tourism revenues each year will bring the republic at least $100 billion. The official believes that up to 90 million tourists from different countries will visit Turkey annually.^[2]

1 million people visited Turkey for hair transplants

Approximately half of Turkey's $4 billion in medical tourism revenues in 2022 came from hair transplant services. This was announced to the Anadolu agency by the head of the Turkish Health Tourism Association (TÜSATDER) Servet Terziler.

"Taking into account the proceeds from hair transplantation in the amount of $2 billion, we can say that 1 million people arrived in Turkey last year to carry out this procedure," said the head of TÜSATDER in January 2023.

According to him, 2022 was very productive for the health tourism sector, as evidenced by revenues of $4 billion. "Foreign tourists are also showing serious interest in spa tourism. Taking into account income in this area, indicators exceeding $10 billion have been achieved, "Terziler said.

However, hair transplantation is the locomotive of general health care services, the head of the association emphasized.

"Receipts from the dental sector exceeded $500 million, from plastic surgery approached $400 million," the head of the association added.

34.8 million tourists in 9 months

From January to September 2022, Turkey was visited by 34.8 million foreign tourists, Russia in 9 months took second place in terms of tourist flow, and in September - the first.
