Unmanned train with a hundred carriages launched in China
At the end of September 2024, China launched an unmanned heavy-duty train on a railway connecting Hebei provinces in the north and Shandong in the east of the country. This marked a major milestone in the transition from automated to unmanned rail freight technology.
According to the China Media Group (CMG), the new train consists of 108 cars with a total length of about 1,300 meters and weighing about 10,800 tons. The composition of the specified route takes two and a half hours. This branch is mainly used for coal transportation.
It is noted that after the widespread introduction of unmanned railway communication, the average speed of trains in China will increase by 1.7 km/h, and the average energy consumption will decrease by 2.9%, which will significantly increase the efficiency of cargo transportation in the country. Previously, self-driving train technology was mainly used in urban rail systems and was not used on a large scale on railway lines for heavy haul.
As part of the project, the research team created China's first intelligent model of heavy rail transport with a centralized station control system and a smart train control platform. The architecture is based on three key components: comprehensive support and modeling, remote control and autonomous driving, as well as integrated safety monitoring from the air, from space and the ground.
"The unmanned heavy-duty train successfully completed its maiden voyage on the Shuozhou-Huanghua Railway, the main conduit for transporting coal from the northwest regions to the eastern regions of China, marking a new breakthrough in the evolution of automated transportation," the China Daily said.[1]

China's railways carry record number of passengers and cargo in a year
China's railways carried a record number of passengers and cargo in 2023. This is evidenced by data from the state-owned China State Railway Group (CSRG), published in January 2024.
According to Vedomosti, citing CSRG materials, in 2023 trains in China transported 3.68 billion passengers and 3.91 billion tons of cargo. In 2022, Chinese railways transported 2.69 billion passengers (+ 67.6%) and transported goods for 3.97 billion tons (+ 1.8%).
The total revenue from rail transportation in 2023 amounted to 964.1 billion yuan ($135.8 billion), which is 39% higher than the result of a year ago. As of the end of 2023, the operational length of China's railway network reached 159 thousand km, including 45 thousand km of high-speed railways. Investments in fixed assets of the country's railway sector amounted to 764.5 billion yuan (about $106.3 billion), which is 7.5% more than in 2022.
According to the China State Railway Group, daily passenger traffic on the railway transport China in 2023 amounted to more than 10 million people, and on peak days trains transported more than 20 million passengers per day. The average daily number of passenger trains involved was 10,169, which is 13.9% more than in 2019.
In 2024, it is expected to increase passenger traffic to 3.86 billion people and increase the volume of cargo transportation to 3.93 billion tons. China State Railway Group revenues in 2024 should eventually exceed 1 trillion yuan ($139 billion).
In September 2023, the PRC launched a high-speed railway with a maximum speed of 350 km/h, it connected Fuzhou and Xiamen. The length of the railway is 277 km, a segment of 19.9 km passes directly above the sea.[2]
China doubles port purchases "not just for trade" in 10 years
In early November 2023, it became known that China has more than doubled the number of ports included in its own network in ten years. If in 2010 Beijing owned 44 ports, then in 2020 their number reached 105.
According to The Washington Post, China owns or operates ports and terminals in more than 50 countries covering all oceans and all continents. Many are located along the world's most strategically important waterways. The stated goal of developing this maritime network is commercial: to expand China's access to world markets and simplify trade with other states. However, analysts believe Beijing is pursuing its own military interests.
The bulk of the investment was made by companies owned by the Chinese government, effectively making Beijing and the Chinese Communist Party the largest operator of ports that lie at the center of global supply chains, the publication said. |
It is noted that China received a 99-year lease on the port of Hambantota in Sri Lanka, which gave it an important bridgehead on the busy sea route between Asia and the West. According to US intelligence, Beijing has resumed efforts to build military facilities in the port of Halif (UAE). In addition, China has placed a military facility near the commercial port in Djibouti, at the mouth of the Red Sea. Beijing is also increasing its influence at Suez Canal ports. In addition, the PRC controls or is a major investor in more than 20 ports in Europe, many of which serve as vital logistics and transshipment sites for NATO and the US Navy . According to the American side, the development of China's port network represents a "serious problem of national and economic security."[3]
