2024: Miratorg bought Baltic Seeds

On April 8, 2024, Miratorg announced the purchase of the Baltic Seeds seed potato producer. The deal was approved by the Government Foreign Investment Control Commission. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

According to the press service of Miratorg, the purchase of Baltic seeds is carried out with the aim of producing seed and commercial potatoes. In addition, the assets of the absorbed producer will be used to develop the selection of seeds of grain, legumes and perennial herbs, the agro-industrial holding noted.

Also, the purchased business should help Miratorg in the implementation of a project for the production of seeds of perennial herbs, launched in 2020. Growing in a Baltic climate is favorable for growing lawn grass seeds, the company added.

According to the Unified State Register of Legal Entities (USRUL), the founders of the Baltic Seeds company were Dutch Somers International B.V. (owns 99.745%) and the Daleod private fund (0.19125%), as well as a citizen of Belarus Leon Dominic Buyon (0.06375%). The company is registered in the Kaliningrad region, in the village of Rzhevskoye. In total, the company grows 19 varieties of potatoes, including canteens, chip varieties and french fries, according to the website in April 2024.

Aleksey Krasilnikov, executive director of the Union of Potato and Vegetable Market Participants, in a conversation with Kommersant, suggested that the takeover of Baltic Semyan would help Miratorg reduce risks due to restrictions on seed imports imposed by the Ministry of Agriculture. For 2024, the import of potato seeds from unfriendly countries is limited to a quota of 16 thousand tons.^[1]
