1742: Elizaveta Petrovna attracts court choir singers for the first time to perform choirs in operas
Main article: Music in Russia in the XVIII century
Jacob Stelin:
In previous times, the choir was not used for anything else, as soon as for church singing, and only from the time of Elizabeth it became used also in chamber and theater music. The reason for this was the following circumstance.
For the coronation of Empress Elizabeth in 1742 in Moscow, among other entertainments, the most charming opera Clemenza di Tito was intended. I was entrusted with the administrative part, the compilation of a suitable prologue for this outstanding event (La Russia afflitta e riconsolata ") and, in general, concern for opera.
At the first rehearsal, I found it very funny that Emperor Titus had to sing a song of praise or choir for himself along with his close associates and three other persons (since there were no more participating and other singers). To eliminate this difficulty, the empress ordered the singers of the court chapel to be taken into the orchestra and learn all the choirs. The order was carried out; Italian words were painted in Russian letters between four voices, and more than fifty selected singers were trained after a number of opera rehearsals. The empress herself deigned to attend one such rehearsal and witnessed what excellent results the choir had achieved. No wonder later, speaking to foreign embassies, he rightfully earned the name of the incomparable from them.
After this performance, these church singers were used in all operas where choirs met, as well as on large court holidays and in chamber music. Many of them so mastered the graceful taste in Italian music that in the performance of arias they were not much inferior to the best Italian singers.
