At the request of TAdviser, the experts of the project partner companies shared their views on the main trends in the Russian software market and prospects, in the event of a weakening of the sanctions regime and the return of large foreign software developers to our country.
On key trends in the Russian software market
Evgeny Perov, Product Director of Compass Corporate Messenger:
The first trend of the Russian IT market is the creation of all-in-one products for work.
This is a global global trend in B2B products. Think of Zoom in 2020 - these are just great videoconferences. Now it is a full-fledged workspace with chats, VKS, calendar, documents, mail and much more.
Russian vendors are going the same way, but waiting for the application all in one from one developer in the near future is not worth it - the market, and therefore resources, are limited. It is more profitable for small IT companies to cooperate with each other than to try to capture neighboring segments of competitors.
Monolithic Russian Microsoft is not expected in the near future - it will take a lot of money, time and market readiness. The business is now assembling all-in-one workspace as a constructor. The core product is most often a corporate messenger and video conferencing, and the rest of the services for work are added to the interface using Smart Apps and direct integrations. There are three such products on the Russian market, including the corporate messenger Compass, which went this way.
The second trend is the focus on protecting corporate information and security.
This trend was relevant even in the first wave of import substitution, it is still relevant now. Business has high security requirements, and vendors have made great progress in this field. If we are talking about instant messengers, it is difficult to find any big enterprise product that could not be deployed on-premium. Many products have high-quality data encryption when transmitted or stored on a server and device.
Data confidentiality is also important, for example, remote login when losing a device, deleting employee data during dismissal. We at Compass went further - the app tracks device hacking and blocks access to company data. Over the years of working with large customers, Russian products, from a security point of view, often even overtake the usual world leaders.
The third trend is flexibility in creating functions.
Try writing to Slack or Microsoft with a request to add a feature that is very lacking for work. At best, you'll receive a formal unsubscribe thanking you for the feedback and promising you'll do it someday. Russian vendors are more flexible in this regard. They understand the specifics of the business and are ready to implement the function under the requests of a certain industry. This is a fairly common story of interaction with large customers. A business can easily reach not for technical support, but for the owner of the company, share feedback, leave a request for one or another and get a specific period of its implementation.
Denis Khorikov, Director of the Technical Department of SMART Technologies, on the critical role of integrators:
From our experience, most Russian manufacturers use Open Source software in their products, trying to make them a "box" version. But in reality, there is not enough time and resources, in this regard, even leading domestic products require "file refinement": interfaces are unusual, functionality often needs adaptation, integration and training of personnel. Therefore, the role of integrators becomes critical - without them, customers do not always cope even with the usual actions.
Projects are becoming more complex, and now any implementation requires a full-fledged architectural study. There are no more simple solutions - even low-budget initiatives need business justification: ROI used to be considered in general, now - for every project. The key criterion is the specific benefit expressed in numbers and timing.
There is also a transition to a model of transferring IT costs from capital to operating costs - for example, to SaaS. This increases flexibility by allowing projects to stop without balance sheet implications, but creates risks associated with accumulated costs and increasing information security requirements: access control, data protection and integration with other services come to the fore.
Finally, integrators are increasingly creating their own teams for testing Russian products and "catching bugs" - it was the refinement that became the most resource-intensive stage. This is especially true because customers require quick and predictable results, and the initial stage is pain.
Sergey Nikitin, Head of the Product Management Group of Gazinformservice, on the trends in the information security software market:
More and more vendors understand that Western solutions are likely not to return in the foreseeable future, but demand has remained. For example, three years ago, one of our products did not have Russian competitors, and now there are about five or even more of them. But the competition keeps in good shape. Of the latter - "in trend," of course, artificial intelligence: both attackers and defenders use it. We are part of the AI Technology Security Research Consortium, developing solutions that allow you to apply machine learning models to cybersecurity. We have "packaged" our expertise into products that can be used by both the corporate sector and integrators, for example as part of SOC.
Rustam Rustamov, Deputy General Director of RED SOFT:
Today, the Russian software market is focused on meeting the growing demand and needs of customers seeking to replace foreign counterparts with reliable and high-quality domestic solutions. Customers are waiting for functional and stable products. To meet the expectations of our customers, we are developing a product line. This year, a new RED VRM product was launched on the market - virtualization system of workplaces. We are expanding the ecosystem of technological compatibility, it has already included more than 3000 solutions from Russian vendors. We are actively developing educational projects aimed at training highly qualified specialists.
We also understand the importance of technical compatibility of domestic developments with the existing infrastructure of enterprises. We create mechanisms for integration and soft migration. Such solutions are in demand not only at home, but also abroad. To create such solutions, an integrated approach is required: combining technologies, expertise and partner support to create a holistic ecosystem of software products that can successfully compete in the international market.
On the prospects for import substitution of foreign IT solutions in the event of a weakening of the sanctions regime and the return of large foreign software developers
Denis Khorikov, Director of the Technical Department of SMART technologies:
The return of Western vendors will not lead to a massive rollback - rather, multidirectional processes will begin. Some customers who stayed on foreign solutions and supported them through parallel imports will continue this path. But those who switched to domestic products and were satisfied with them will not return back.
This situation creates a "test of strength" for Russian developers: in recent years they have received a "credit of trust," but now they must either consolidate the result or lose. It is important that most products are not enough for Russia alone. Real development is access to foreign markets, and it is in this direction that domestic vendors are now looking at.
Thus, even with a decrease in sanctions pressure, the Russian market will not return to the state of 2021. It has become more mature, pragmatic and focused on economic efficiency and technological independence.
Sergey Artemov, Director of Superapp Development eXpress:
In 2025, Russian vendors adhere to three main technological vectors: security, innovation and AI, as well as integration into a single ecosystem. Against the background of the prospects for the return of foreign vendors to the Russian market, already now domestic developers will be able to guarantee them worthy competition, especially in the class of mobile platforms, VKS and IT security systems.
Evgeny Perov, Product Director of Compass Corporate Messenger:
The potential return of Western vendors is unlikely to globally turn the Russian market upside down.
First, big companies don't want to take risks again and rely on products that have once gone. In addition, the transition to Russian products is already included in long-term strategies. The reverse transition to the same Teams is big risks and big money that the business once paid in import substitution and will be forced to pay again.
Secondly, the business is already used to the quality of client service and is not ready to abandon it. Companies can influence road maps for the development of domestic products and negotiate with developers.
Thirdly, Russian products already have a unique industry functionality that is suitable for a certain area or market as a whole. Now go back to the foreign product=abandon the exclusive opportunities that only Russian vendors have.
Of course, there will be no scenario that Western vendors have returned, and customers completely ignore them. Some of the smaller companies that use cloud solutions may be moving. Large business, which is used to on-premium, service and functions, will not rush to transition.
Sergey Nikitin, Head of the Product Management Group of Gazinformservice:
It is no secret that some customers continue to use foreign products, but even they are increasingly looking at Russian developments - simply because domestic products are already very close in quality to imported ones. If three, five years ago we almost always looked from the bottom up, today already foreign customers are looking at our products with interest - because the price/quality ratio becomes more pleasant. Of course, the risk that someone can switch to foreign software again cannot be ruled out, but most likely this will be simply unprofitable, given the cost of such reverse migration and concerns about the reliability of the supplier.
Rustam Rustamov, Deputy General Director of RED SOFT:
The process of import substitution of IT solutions will not stop even with the weakening of the sanctions regime and the return of large foreign suppliers. Until 2030, we have clear tasks from the state: to ensure the independence and security of the country's information systems. Our customers understand the need to switch to domestic software: the use of foreign solutions carries the risk of failures and loss of control over key processes.
