Project date: 2025/11  - 2026/08

2025: Digital Road Transport Infrastructure Twin Begins

SIMETRA Group of Companies has begun to create a digital twin of the road transport infrastructure of the Leningrad Region. Within the framework of the project, SIMETRA also updates the transport macro model of the region, which will be implemented on the basis of the RITM³ platform. Simetra announced this on December 2, 2025.

The customer of the project was ANO "Directorate for the Development of the Transport System of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region" (hereinafter referred to as the Directorate). The development and implementation of a digital twin is aimed at forming a single road infrastructure management circuit, as well as increasing the mobility of citizens.

The implementation of the project will improve the situation on the roads, improve the quality of management at all stages - from road maintenance, current and scheduled repairs to forecasting the reconstruction and construction of transport infrastructure facilities.

The digital twin will provide the ability to integrate with road cameras and other infrastructure, which will allow you to assess the situation on the roads in real time, as well as more effectively approach the regulation of traffic flows, taking into account repair work, accidents and other things.

As part of the first stage, SIMETRA will analyze the existing information systems of the region affecting the management of the road transport infrastructure of the Leningrad Region, and will also supply the customer with a digital RITM³ platform. The solution is intended for analysis, planning and management of transport systems at the region level, and will consist of functional modules.

In total, within the framework of the development of a digital twin of the Leningrad Region, six modules will be delivered, including a geo-information system (GIS) module, a transport planning action module, a transport modeling and forecasting module, a road works module, as well as a public transport traffic control module.

At the same time, experts are updating the transport macro model of the Leningrad Region, taking into account plans for its development in the future. To do this, SIMETRA will conduct field surveys of transport and passenger flows, as well as analyze public transport and passenger infrastructure routes. Specialists will also update data on the socio-economic parameters of municipal districts of the Leningrad region.

Project completion is scheduled for August 2026.

According to the Directorate, this is a serious investment in the future of the Leningrad Region. The project marks a transition from a reactive way of managing the transportation situation to a proactive one. With its implementation, it will become possible not only to record traffic jams and accidents, but to prevent their occurrence. For residents of the region, this ultimately means saving time, more comfortable and predictable travel by public transport and increased road safety.

Our main task at the first stage is to conduct a deep diagnosis of all existing information systems and large-scale field work to understand the current situation. This will allow laying the technological foundation, thanks to which our platform will RITM³ become the "digital heart" of the future transport system of the Leningrad Region. The modules will provide a full management cycle: from deep analysis to accurate forecasting and operational intervention, "added Sergey Blakitny, director of regional consulting at SIMETRA Group of Companies.
