Antiseptics (sanitizers)

Content

Alcohol-containing antiseptics

Alcohol-containing hand antiseptics destroy the vast majority of bacteria and viruses, and at the same time fungi.

As of 2020, from a sanitary point of view, the use of alcohol-containing antiseptics is as effective as washing hands with soap and water. With the correct use of alcohol antiseptics, the number of microorganisms on the hands is reduced by four or five orders of magnitude. There was a million - there were a dozen left.

Alcohol in the antiseptic should be at least 60%. Funds with less are not very scary for microbes.

2022: Ministry of Industry and Trade approves mandatory digital labeling of antiseptics

In mid-August 2022, the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced the timing of the introduction of mandatory digital labeling of cosmetic products with the declared antimicrobial effect, as well as skin antiseptics - from April 1, 2023. This was reported by TASS with reference to the press service of the department.

It is expected that from March 1, 2023, registration in the Honest Sign labeling information system may become mandatory, and from April 1, 2023, antiseptic labeling. The deadlines are also set for providing information on turnover and withdrawal from it: from September 1, 2023 - retail trade, from November 1, 2023 - wholesale trade within the framework of volume-articular accounting and from August 1, 2025 - wholesale trade within the framework of sample accounting, noted in the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

When deciding to conduct an experiment on labeling a particular group, the Russian government and the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade are primarily guided by the Strategy to Counter Illegal Product Turnover, which was adopted until 2025. It is in it that the food industry is designated as one of the priority industries for monitoring and taking measures to combat illegal trafficking. At the same time, and I would like to emphasize this especially, the initiator of the introduction of labeling is often the business itself, and in the case of antiseptics it happened, - the press service quotes the words of the deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Vasily Shpak.

An experiment on the labeling of antiseptics is carried out in Russia from August 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022. At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has developed and submitted to the Government of the Russian Federation a draft resolution on the extension of the experiment until February 28, 2023, "to ensure the industry as smoothly as possible transition to new requirements," the ministry said in a press release.[1]

Benzene, which causes cancer, found in sanitizers of 15 manufacturers

At the end of March 2021, it became known that some widely available hand disinfectants contain high levels of a chemical known to cause cancer. The problem was identified in the products of 15 manufacturers.

According to the online pharmacy Valisure, which checks the quality and stability of pharmaceutical products, sanitizers that flooded the market during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic in response to increased demand contain a large amount of benzene. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, benzene is a carcinogen, with the WHO's cancer research arm ranking it as the highest risk, on a par with asbestos.

Valisure analyzed 260 bottles of 168 brands and found that 17% of the samples contained detectable levels of benzene. Twenty-one bottles, or 8%, contained benzene above two parts per million, the limit set by regulators for liquid hand sanitizers for the duration of a pandemic. This level is "tolerated without loss when used for a relatively short period of time," regulators said.

These 8% of the sanitizers with the highest carcinogen levels belonged to fifteen different brands. Samples were taken from retail and online store shelves, Valisure said. At the company's insistence, regulators have taken to checking hand sanitizers to recall products from the market if necessary.

Regulators remind manufacturers, distributors, repackagers and importers that they are responsible for the quality of their products and urge manufacturers to check the composition of their products to assess their compliance with specifications and the absence of harmful impurities, recalled US regulatory spokesman Jeremy Kahn in an email sent to various companies.[2]

Digital labeling of antiseptics is launched in Russia

On March 24, 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation announced the approval of a draft government decree on conducting an experiment in the country on digital labeling of perfume and cosmetic products intended for hand hygiene with an antimicrobial effect declared in the labeling of consumer containers, as well as skin antiseptics - disinfectants,

It is planned to announce the results of the study in April.

The head of the Stavropol  Territory Vladimir Vladimirov noted that during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, Stavropol chemical industry enterprises reoriented to the production of disinfectants and skin antiseptics. This helped to ensure the protection of people in a difficult epidemiological situation.

Nevertheless, even in our region, which independently produces antiseptics, there are cases of the appearance of dubious cosmetic goods issued as disinfectants. Marking of cosmetic products is necessary. So we will protect people from fakes, fair business - from unfair competition, and the market will become more transparent, "he added.
