2023: The global market for educational blockchain solutions grew by 25% over the year to $1.22 billion
In 2023, the global market for educational blockchain solutions reached $1.22 billion. The indicator for 2022, when expenses in this area were estimated at $0.98 billion, was exceeded by a quarter - 25%. This is stated in the Market Research Future study, the results of which are presented at the end of October 2024.
The industry in question is showing significant growth, which is associated with an increasing focus on ensuring transparency and safety in educational processes. Blockchain technology offers a decentralized solution that protects students' sensitive information from unauthorized changes and use for fraudulent purposes. Another market driver is the ongoing transition to online learning platforms. By implementing blockchain systems, educational institutions can reduce administrative costs, speed up information processing and improve the accuracy of records.
Among the key areas of application of blockchain solutions in education are student authentication, verification of credentials, ensuring the security of operations and managing the learning process. In 2023, the costs in these areas amounted to $0.3 billion, $0.25 billion, $0.4 billion and $0.27 billion, respectively. In regional terms, North America is leading with $0.55 billion, followed by Europe with $0.3 billion and the Asia-Pacific region with $0.25 billion. The total contribution of South America, the Middle East and Africa amounted to $0.12 billion. The list of key industry players includes:
- OpenClassrooms;
- Udacity;
- BitDegree;
- Parcel;
- SAP;
- Parchment;
- Zynga;
- Mintable;
- Blockchain Education Network;
- Skillshare;
- IBM;
- Coursera;
- EdX;
- Instructure.
At the end of 2024, the global market for educational blockchain solutions is estimated at $1.53 billion. Going forward, the CAGR (compound percentage CAGR) is expected to be 25.01%. Thanks to this, by 2032, costs will rise to $9.1 billion.[1]

Compiled a rating of universities for the development of blockchain
In early October 2021, the cryptocurrency news portal CoinDesk ranked the 50 best universities in blockchain development. In total, about 230 educational institutions around the world were analyzed.
To determine which institutions to focus on, the researchers added institutions to the list according to their ability to meet one of three criteria:
- Included any educational institution that entered the top 100 of any of the USNWR Best Global Universities (2021), QS World University Rankings (2022), ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities (2021) or World University Rankings (2022).
- Included all educational institutions that were considered in 2020 and were similarly based on aggregation of external ratings.
Of the top 50 institutions, 13 are in the United States, including Arizona State University (30th place) and New York University (41st place).
The main factors are:
- Existing blockchain-related offerings on campus, including classes, education centers, clubs and more.
- Scientific impact, including the number of blockchain and cryptocurrency-related research papers published between 2019 and 2021.
- Employment and results in industry
- Training costs
- Overall academic reputation
Each category consists of several subcategories, offering a holistic picture of the university's presence in the blockchain space. For the final assessment, researchers from CoinDesk assigned each institution points proportional to their results in each category and normalized the final final scores on a scale of 0 to 100. Even small changes in methodology can significantly affect the end result from CoinDesk, as can data outliers or even errors made by the researcher.
