200 thousand years ago: is Botswana the birthplace of modern humanity?
Analysis of ancient DNA indicated that the first members of Homo sapiens appeared off the banks of the Zambezi River, where they lived for about 70 thousand years before their descendants began to colonize Africa. This conclusion was reached by scientists whose article in October 2019 was published by the scientific journal Nature.
"The first two groups of people left the area approximately 130 and 110,000 years ago when it began to be favoured by a climate that opened up green corridors across deserts. The first group of migrants moved to the northeast, and the second to the southwest. The second managed to gain a foothold in new territories and begin to colonize southern Africa, "said Vanessa Hayes, a geneticist at the University of New South Wales, one of the authors of the work.
Scientists studied a small part of the genome in mitochondria - mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA).
The oldest mtDNA family includes Khoisan peoples, including South African Bushmen (San) and Gottentots (Koy-Koin). By comparing differences in the structure of this part of the genome, scientists tried to find regions where people with the least number of small mutations lived. 200 mtDNA samples of residents of the Kalahari Desert and other areas of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana were examined and decoded.
The result of the analysis showed that the first representatives of people appeared south of the Zambezi River on the coast of the now dry Lake McGadikgali.
