2022: Kazakh residents prove to be world leaders in share of food spending
Kazakhstan turned out to be the leader among European countries in terms of the share of food costs in the family budget of the population, while the least spent on food in Luxembourg. These are the results of the RIA Novosti study, published in December 2022.
According to experts, spending on the purchase of food makes up one of the main items of spending on the family budget in most European countries. At the same time, depending on the living conditions in each specific state, the share of food costs in the total amount of expenses varies significantly. |
In countries with a prosperous economic situation and a high level of income, food costs are low relative to other costs and often account for no more than 15% of total family costs. Residents of such countries spend the rest of their funds on entertainment, travel, education, visits to cafes and restaurants, household goods, equipment and other goods and services. |
Another situation is observed in less economically prosperous countries. The level of well-being of residents of such states does not allow spending significant amounts on goods and services that are secondary to products. Residents here are forced to spend a significant part of their funds on buying food, up to half of all consumer expenses of the family, experts add, the authors of the study explain. |
The first place in the ranking was taken by Luxembourg. Residents of this country spend only 8.4% of their expenses on food purchases. Next are the Netherlands and the United Kingdom with 10.6% of expenses. Also, less than 12% of expenses are directed to food by residents of Ireland, Germany, Finland, Austria and Norway. In general, experts note, the upper part of the rating is made up of economically developed Western European countries.
The most significant share of food costs in consumer spending is among residents of the countries of the former USSR and the states of Eastern Europe. The last place is occupied by Kazakhstan, residents here spend on food the largest share of the family budget of all countries represented in the ranking - 49.4%.
More than 40% of expenses are also for food from residents of Ukraine and Moldova. Russia is at the bottom of the ranking, sharing 30th and 31st places with Montenegro.[1]
2021: How much does a country's population spend on consuming goods and services
The global capacity of the consumer sector is estimated at $52.3 trillion for 2021 (data from the World Bank). This takes into account the expenses of the population on goods and services, both national producers and import supplies at nominal prices at the average annual market rate of the dollar.
Of course, it is more correct to consider purchasing power parity, however, in defense of the market exchange rate, it can be noted that the dollar capacity of the consumer sector shows the potential ability to solvent import and access international companies to the national market.
As Spydell Finance noted, purchasing power parity is a rather slippery definition, since you can find many counterarguments. For services - rather yes, but comparable quality goods strive for world prices with rare exceptions in the medium term, which fully fits into the logic of international competition.
Of the 52.3 trillion of global demand, the United States accounts for 15.9 trillion of consumer demand, in second place is China - 6.8 trillion, Japan - 2.66 trillion, Germany - 2.1 trillion, Britain - 1.9 trillion, India - 1.9 trillion, France - 1.56 trillion, Italy - 1.22 trillion, Canada - 1.08 trillion, Brazil - 980 billion and Russia - 890 billion (11th place in the global list).
If we compare 2021 with 2013, consumer demand in dollar terms in Brazil fell by 36%, in Iran minus 33%, in Russia minus 27%, in Nigeria minus 28%, in Turkey minus 23%, in Argentina minus 19%, and in Japan minus 12%.
Growth over 20% among large countries was shown: China - plus 98%, India - 77%, Saudi Arabia - 54%, USA - 40%, Indonesia - 27%, South Korea - 21%.
Per capita, consumer demand in the United States is $48 thousand, which is 10 times more than in China, however, since 2008 the gap has narrowed dramatically (then it was 27 times).
In Russia, retail demand (goods plus services) is $6.2 thousand (457 thousand rubles per person per year). In Saudi Arabia - 9.62 thousand, in Mexico - 6.6 thousand, in Turkey - 5.34 thousand, in China - 4.8 thousand, in Brazil - 4.6 thousand, in Indonesia - 2.4 thousand, in India - 1.34 thousand.
