2023:.ru entered the top five national domains in the world in terms of the number of active sites

.ru entered the top five national domains in the world in terms of the number of active sites. This was announced in early December 2023 by the Coordination Center for Domains.RU/.RF with reference to the analytical company DataProvider. Read more here.

2021: The cheapest thing in the post-Soviet space is to register a domain name in the national zone of Russia

With the collapse of the USSR, the countries gained not only independence, but also as technologies developed, their own tariffs for various services, including Internet access and the purchase of domain names. The experts of the hosting provider HostFly.by decided to ask how much it costs to register domain names in the national zones of the countries of the former Union and where business on the Internet can be started literally for a penny, and where for thousands of dollars. The company announced this on November 15, 2021.

It turned out that the cheapest thing in the post-Soviet space is to register a domain name in the national zone of Russia (.ru and RF). The cost of registration is $2.7 at the exchange rate. Moreover, sometimes special marketing actions are held in Russia, when the domain can be obtained for free, in the "load" for hosting or advertising campaign.

In second place is Uzbekistan, domain registration in the.uz zone will cost $3.28.

It will be a little more expensive to start an Internet business in Kazakh. For registration in.kz for November 2021, they ask for 7.37 US dollars. There are several large registrars in Kazakhstan, each offers its own price, but it is not very different from the one mentioned.

In Azerbaijan, the spread of registration prices is more significant - from 11.76 to 23.53 dollars per name in the.az zone

Belarus is the most stable country at prices for registering domain names in.by and.bel - 13.18 US dollars. The prices of the registrars are the same.

A line below is Ukraine, although the price of domains in the national zone.ua bites (up to $74), but in the com.ua or Cyrillic zone. Ukrainian domains are sold at $13.5 apiece.

For $17, you can buy a domain name in the national zone of Tajikistan (.tj).

Below the rating is Armenia. In the.am zone, domains register at a starting price of $20.

In Moldova, domain names are slightly more expensive, and the spread of prices between registrars is more significant: from 25 to 39 US dollars for a domain name.md.

In Kyrgyzstan, you need to pay even more for the right to identify your site with the country on the Internet. All registrars have almost the same prices - 2420 soms or $28.5 per name in the.kg zone. Note that domain names in the national zones of the webmaster are bought not only because of the binding to the country. Sometimes domain zones are consonant with generally accepted designations or English words. For example, kg is also a unit of mass.

The most expensive domain name in the national zone is in Turkmenistan. For a domain in the.tm zone, you need to pay $102.6 per year, but subject to payment immediately for 10 years. You will immediately have to pay more than a thousand US dollars. Some registrars have even higher prices, the total payment can exceed 1.5 thousand dollars. To the residents of Turkmenistan, such payments may seem unbearable. Therefore, the demand for domains in the.tm zone is created mainly by English-speaking webmasters.

The fact is that the.tm domain coincides in spelling with the English abbreviation trade mark (trademark). This makes domain names in the.tm zone popular with wealthy brands, which allows you to maintain the highest price for their registration for a long time.

Afilias is listed in the Guinness Book of Records

On September 19, 2018, it became known that Afilias was included in the Guinness Book of Records. Earlier, the company won a tender for the right to become the technical operator of the national domain Australia.au. Afilias managed to get ahead of the competitor who Neustar provided these services to the.AU domain registry earlier. On July 1, 2018, a one-time transit of 3,153,979 domain names registered at that time in the.AU domain zone was carried out under the control of Afilias. This event was recognized as a world record - as "the largest one-time transit of a common top-level domain on the network." Internet The corresponding diploma was presented to Afilias representatives at a ceremony New York on September 18, 2018.

Thus, Afilias broke its own record. In 2003, she became the technical operator of the general top-level domain.ORG. Then about 2.7 million domain names came under its control at a time. The previous record was exceeded by about 400 thousand[1] names[2].

2017

332.4 million domains: + 0.9% growth due to.com and national domains

Verisign has presented its traditional Domain Name Industry Brief. As of the end of 2017, there were 332.4 million registered domain names worldwide. This is 0.9 percent higher than in 2016.

Such an increase should be recognized as modest, if we recall the indicators of 2015-2016 (about 6.8%). The main reason for the decline in growth rates was the unsuccessful performance of new common top-level domains. The number of names registered in them for the year decreased by about 5 million. Accordingly, the market share owned by new domains decreased over the year from 7.8% to 6.2%.

The decline was also shown by the Verisign-managed shared.NET top-level domain. The number of registrations in it in 2017 decreased by 800 thousand and amounted to 14.5 million. The main locomotives of insignificant growth, which was still achieved, were.COM and national domains. The.COM domain "grew" by another 5 million registrations and ended the year with an indicator of 131.9 million names. National domains added 3.4 million names throughout the year and achieved an annual growth of 2.4%[3] THE[3].

GoDaddy leads by a wide margin

The company GoDaddy confidently retains the status of the largest domain registrar. This is evidenced by company statistics Verisign published by DomainNameWire. As of October 2017, GoDaddy accounts for 46,325,700 of all registrations in the.COM domain zone.

The second with a large lag is Tucows - 15,721,852 registrations. Endurance has the third place - 8,138,111 registrations.

The same companies and in the same order lead in the number of new registrations in the.COM domain for the period of 2017 taken into account by statistics. 942,007 registrations were made through GoDaddy, 197,433 through Tucows and 170,597 through Endurance.

All figures are given taking into account the statistics of both the registrars themselves and affiliated with them or their subsidiaries.

The growth of domain space has almost stopped

The CENTR Council of European National Top Level Domain Registries has published[4] its DomainWire Global TLD Report for the third quarter of 2017. Its data suggests that the growth of domain space between July and September has almost stopped. It was 0.7% compared to the same period last year. Of the 17 "old" shared top-level domains, only five domain zones showed growth. Leading in this indicator, as it is easy to understand, is the.COM domain, which added almost 2 million registered names in the third quarter.

European national domains generally did not show growth, but after a long period of decline, this result is described in the report as rather positive. The leaders in terms of growth rates since the beginning of the year among European national domains were.SE (Sweden),.PT (Portugal) and.AL (Albania).

The worst situation is with the new shared top-level domains. A drop was recorded here, which amounted to 7.2% at once. Its main "culprits" are domain zones that practiced almost free distribution of names. With the onset of the renewal period, many owners of such names, acquired at a bargain price and "just in case," simply did not renew them. This primarily applies to the.XYZ and.TOP domains. The report notes that without their indicators, the growth of the domain space would not be 0.7%, but 2.5%. Another reason for the decline in growth is the decline in activity in the Chinese market. The document also states that a number of new domains have demonstrated good growth indicators over the past year, including an internationalized.RUS domain. The total number of domain names registered in the world at the end of September 2017 is estimated at about 311 million.

2010: GoDaddy leads by 30%

In 2010, an American company remained the leader in the domain registration market GoDaddy.com. About 35 million different sites around the world received a domain name from GoDaddy[5] is[5].

1998: ICANN monopoly on domain sales

Initially, ICANN ("Web Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers," in Russian - [aikén]) was conceived as a non-profit organization. Until 1998, the sale of domains was actually in the monopoly of one registrar, because of this, prices for the purchase of a domain name were unreasonably high. The domain name cost the buyer from $50.
