2024: Global Endoscopic Equipment Sales Reach $31.19 Billion for the Year
In 2024, the global endoscopic equipment market amounted to $31.19 billion. More than a quarter of the total costs came from the North American region. Such data are presented in a study by Precedence Research, the results of which TAdviser got acquainted with in early May 2025.
Endoscopy is a minimally invasive method of instrumental diagnostics that allows you to inspect internal organs and cavities using special devices. The technology is used to examine the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, urethra, bladder, female genital organs, kidneys, hearing organs, etc. The method is based on the use of an endoscope - a special device with a flexible or solid tube, at the end of which there is an image sensor, an optical lens and a light source. Such devices provide the ability to perform biopsies and a number of medical procedures, as well as the collection of secrets and fluids for tests. Endoscopes are introduced through the natural openings of the body (for example, in gastro-, broncho-, recto-, hystero-, cystoscopy) or through operative incisions (in laparoscopy or mediastinoscopy). The resulting image is transmitted to the display and also recorded for later use.
One of the drivers of the analytics market is called population aging. The increase in older adults who are more susceptible to various disorders requiring endoscopic surgery, such as gallstones and endometriosis, drives sales of endoscopic equipment. The use of such devices provides a number of significant advantages over other diagnostic and surgical methods, including safety and minimally invasive, absence of radiation load, speed and accuracy of diagnostics, informativity and availability.
Technological advances, including the introduction of artificial intelligence, are having a positive impact on the industry. AI algorithms make diagnosis faster and more accurate while reducing the number of errors associated with the human factor. For example, AI is able to analyze incoming data in real time, highlighting areas that may be polyps or tumors.
According to analysts, in 2024, the largest revenue was brought by the segment of gastroenterological endoscopy, which is aimed at studying the stomach and intestines. With this method, doctors can detect various pathologies, such as ulcers, tumors, inflammation and other diseases. At the same time, the sector of urological endoscopy demonstrates the highest growth rates. From a geographical point of view, North America was in the lead, accounting for 27% of sales, or $8.42 billion. Moreover, the United States provided $5.87 billion: the dominance of the region is due to the high level of development of health infrastructure and the growing demand for medical diagnostics services. The Asia-Pacific region is developing at the fastest pace. Globally, significant players are named:
- Olympus;
- Karl Storz SE & Co. KG;
- Stryker;
- Boston Scientific;
- Johnson & Johnson;
- Fujifilm Holdings;
- Hoya;
- Nipro;
- Richard Wolf GmbH;
- Cook Medical.
In 2025, sales of endoscopic equipment worldwide are expected to reach $33.22 billion. Precedence Research analysts believe that in the future, the CAGR in the market under consideration will be 6.41%. As a result, by 2034, costs could increase to $58.04 billion.[1]
2018: Endoscopic Ultrasound Equipment Market Size Reaches $830.6 Million for the Year
The market size for endoscopic ultrasound equipment in 2018 reached $830.6 million. More than a third of sales ($296.9 million) of this medical technology fell on North America, according to data from analyst company Fortune Business Insights.
The leadership of North America in the sale of ultrasound endoscopes experts associate with the high prevalence in the region of chronic digestive disorders among the age population. According to The National Center for Biotechnology Information, about 18 million endoscopic procedures are performed in the United States per year.
Well-established health systems and proactive health policies are factors that contribute to the development of the European endoscopic market. And in the Asia-Pacific region, the increase in cancer prevalence leads to an increase in demand for echo endoscopy equipment, the study said.
Fortune Business Insights considers the increase in the prevalence of stomach cancer to be one of the catalysts for the growth of the global endoscope market, from which about 783 thousand people died in 2018.
The following companies were named the largest manufacturers of endoscopes by analysts:
- Olympus;
- Pentax Medical;
- Fujifilm;
- Cook Medical;
- Boston Scientific;
- Medtronic;
- Medi-Globe;
- Conmed.
According to the researchers, the leading players in the market are increasing their investments in research and development to expand the range of products and strengthen their positions. For example, in October 2019, Fujifilm Medical Systems released eight new endoscopes along with a full suite of endoscopic imaging solutions, and Esaote introduced a line of high-performance ultrasound devices for hospitals called MyLab X8 in the same year.[2]
2017: $26bn - MarketsandMarkets data
In 2017, the volume of the world market endoscopic equipment in monetary terms will amount to $25.58 billion. This forecast was made by analysts in December 2017. MarketsandMarkets
Experts believe that in the next five years there will be positive dynamics in the market, and by 2022 sales of endoscopic equipment will increase to $34.82 billion, taking into account which the average annual growth rate (CAGR) during the specified period will be 6.4%.[3]
Among the key factors contributing to the development of the market, analysts name stimulating government initiatives, an increase in the number of hospitals and an increase in investments by medical institutions in the opening of endoscopic departments, technological advances and an increase in the prevalence of diseases requiring endoscopic treatments.
Within the market in question, specialists identify the following product segments: endoscopes, imaging equipment, other endoscopic equipment and accessories. Endoscopes are expected to be the largest segment in 2017.
From an applied perspective, the market is subdivided into laparoscopy, GI endoscopy, arthroscopy, endoscopy in obstetrics, gynecology and urology, bronchoscopy, mediastinoscopy, otoscopy, laryngoscopy, and other directions (endoscopy for facelift, frontlifting, abdominoplasty procedures, and breast augmentation). In 2017, the leading segment is expected to be GI endoscopy equipment. The same category also predicts the highest CAGR rates between 2017 and 2022.
Geographically, the most significant contribution to market expansion is made by North America and Europe. At the same time, analysts warned that the high cost of endoscopic procedures and equipment and the limited financial capacity of developing countries could to some extent hinder the growth of the global endoscopic equipment market.
Among the leading market participants, experts listed the following companies:
- Olympus (Japan)
- KARL STORZ (Germany)
- Stryker (USA)
- Boston Scientific (USA)
- Ethicon (USA)
- Fujifilm (Japan)
- Medtronic (Ireland),
- Hoya (Japan)
- CONMED (USA)
- Richard Wolf (Germany)
