2021: Frontier WAN Platform Market Leaders - Gartner

In September 2021, the analytical company Gartner published the so-called magic quadrant (study), dedicated to the market of border WAN platforms that help businesses control the operation of networks and applications, as well as provide automated and secure connection of applications in the cloud, data center and at the border.

The market under consideration includes SD-WAN solutions and traditional routers, which are used by the company to provide communication between branches. Moreover, the first segment shows confident growth, and the second has been in decline for a long time.

Frontier WAN Platform Market Leaders

Researchers included Fortinet, VMware, Cisco and HPE among the leaders in this market. Each of them has its own pros and cons. The advantages of Cisco analysts included a large customer base (more than 40 thousand by September 2021) and an extensive network of partners around the world. At the same time, the US corporation offers limited integration between its Meraki and Viptela platforms. In addition, Cisco products are expensive.

Fortinet is part of the group of market leaders for border WAN platforms for the second year in a row. The company has 34 thousand customers among users of WAN Edge solutions and more than 10 thousand among customers of SD-WAN products. The main drawback of Fortinet, experts call the lack of a reliable partner ecosystem in the information security market, which would allow the company to offer products compatible with other manufacturers.

Regarding HPE, analysts noted the following problem: the company, having bought competing Silver Peak and Aruba, offers solutions that cause customers some confusion. In addition, they lack built-in advanced security mechanisms, since Aruba prefers to cooperate with third-party vendors in this matter. [1]
