2024: Sales of test strips for glucometers in Russia for the year exceeded ₽11 billion
The Russian retail market for test strips for glucometers, including the e-commerce segment, in 2024 exceeded ₽11 billion in retail prices, including VAT. Compared to 2023, ruble dynamics amounted to 9.2%, and natural consumption of products increased by 6.7%. Over the past 2024, almost 642 million test strips were sold in retail. This became known in March 2025.
According to RNC Pharma, obtained from the database "Audit of retail sales of medical equipment in Russia (total sell out)," monthly during 2024, buyers purchased about 50 million pieces of these products in retail. At the same time, noticeable spikes in sales were observed in March and December.
In the first month of 2024, the traditional decline for January was recorded on the test strip market, but starting in February, demand began to increase. At the end of March, almost 58 million pieces of products worth more than ₽1 billion were sold in retail. In the following months, there was a consistent decrease in product consumption. Minimum sales volumes were observed in the summer months.
In September, steady growth resumed, and in December the number of units sold in this category exceeded 61 million units in the amount of ₽1,1 billion. In January 2025, the test strip market again saw a decrease in sales in accordance with seasonal trends - 52.9 million products were sold per month, while consumers spent ₽985 million.
Retail sales of test strips show a stable correlation with seasonal fluctuations in the volume of sales of drugs for the treatment of diabetes mellitus (group of drugs A10 *). This is especially noticeable in the autumn-winter period. The growth in sales of this group of drugs in October and December coincides with an increase in demand for test strips[1]
2023: Sales growth of glucose meter test strips to 10.1 million packs
Sales of test strips for glucometers in Russia in 2023 reached 10.1 million packages, which is 4.3% more than a year earlier. About this market in monetary terms decreased by 0.4%, to 10.3 billion rubles. This is evidenced by the data of the analytical company RNC Pharma, published on May 3, 2024.
The study notes that the share of the Internet channel in the total sales of test strips has increased significantly - from 4.5% in 2022 to 9.5% a year later.
| Despite the negative ruble dynamics in the market as a whole, in 2023, in relation to the e-com channel, active development was observed, here the volume of sales doubled, both in natural units and in cash. At the same time, in traditional retail, sales of test strips decreased - in money by 5.6%, and in packages by 1.3%, the report said. |
RNC Pharma draws attention to the high level of consolidation of the Russian market for test strips for glucometers: the brands Akku-chek (Roche), Uantach (Johnson & Johnson) and Kontur (Ascensia Diabetes Care) in 2023 accounted for more than 78% of sales in money.
