Internet providers were raised taxes. They close and go to work in gray
On October 15, 2024, it became known that Internet providers were being closed en masse in Ukraine. This is due to higher taxes. In particular, in accordance with the innovations, Ukrainian fixed Internet providers will not be able to work according to a simplified taxation system and must make deductions on a general basis.
According to the publication "Economic Pravda," the number of Internet providers in Ukraine before the change in the tax regime was about 3.5 thousand. Such structures were registered mainly as individual private entrepreneurs. But after tightening tax requirements, local providers began to massively curtail their activities, as the head of the Verkhovna Rada subcommittee on cybersecurity, Alexander Fedienko, spoke about.
After the State Tax Service of Ukraine began to destroy small business Internet providers, I wondered how many entities that provided Internet access services would stop working. The response I received just stunned me! 1316 subjects left the regulator's register, that is, ceased to exist, - said Fedienko on his page on the social network Facebook (owned by Meta, which is recognized as an extremist organization; activities on the territory of the Russian Federation are prohibited). |
It is noted that due to changes in the tax regime, some Internet providers in Ukraine have completely ceased their activities. Others went into the shadows, starting to "work in gray." In addition, some providers have put their business up for sale. According to Interfax, most of the subjects that ceased their activities were located in Kyiv and the Kyiv region - 156 organizations, as well as in the Cherkasy region - 108 units.[2]
2023: Internet censorship system launched to block sites and monitor user activity
In early March 2023, Ukraine launched a centralized system for automatic blocking of Internet resources. Every 15 minutes, the corresponding list of forbidden sites will be updated on the servers of Ukrainian operators.
The system was introduced by order of the National Center for Operational and Technical Management of Telecommunication Networks of 30.01.2023 No. 67/850. Until March 2, all Ukrainian Internet providers were to install it.
In addition to blocking access to prohibited sites itself, it also collects data on users who tried to bypass the ban.
Information about violators will be promptly received by the relevant authorities.
The authorities say that the system is needed solely to filter fraudulent resources, but local Internet activists believe that there are no obstacles to blocking any inconvenient site at all.
