2024: E-commerce in Kazakhstan reached $6 billion in a year
The volume of electronic trade in Kazakhstan in 2024 amounted to 3.2 trillion tenge (about $6 billion). The head of the Ministry of Trade Shakkaliev spoke about this at a meeting of the government of Kazakhstan in mid-January 2025.
According to him, since 2020, e-commerce in Kazakhstan has demonstrated fivefold growth. Arman Shakkaliev stressed that despite significant growth, the indicators remain below the global average.
The head of the Ministry of Trade noted that the volume of the global e-commerce market in 2024 is estimated at $6.3 trillion with a share of e-commerce of 20%.
The Ministry of Trade of Kazakhstan points to the high potential for the development of the industry, due to the wide spread of cashless payments, the development of retail fintech, the availability of the Internet and a significant share of the young population - more than 8 million people.
Based on the analysis, the department formed a typical portrait of an online and offline merchant. The results showed that online trading shows higher efficiency: companies are larger, more sustainable, with more sales and more employees.
Active online companies, accounting for 12.6% of all retailers, create over 300,000 jobs. The productivity of online trading exceeds offline by 33%. At the same time, online trading companies provided tax revenues in the amount of ₸360 billion ($681.1 million) against ₸240 billion ($454 million) from offline retailers, despite the smaller number of companies themselves - 73 thousand against 505 thousand.
The Ministry of Trade of Kazakhstan set a goal to increase the share of e-commerce in the total volume of retail trade to 18.5% by 2029, which will amount to ₸9,3 trillion ($17.5 billion), given the projected growth in retail trade to ₸50 trillion ($94.6 billion).[1]
